Back to our pot of water: Activate the steam release valve to the venting position. Keep your face and fingers away from the top of the knob where the steam vents.

The steam will come shooting up and be a little noisy.

Releasing all of the steam can take a minute or more. The more liquid in the cooker, the longer the release will take.

What Types Of Pressure Releases Do Instant Pots Have

An Instant Pot wont open if it senses that the pressure inside has not been reduced to 0. It will also remain locked until all internal temperatures have reached below 116 degrees Fahrenheit or 48 degrees Celsius so it is very important for you to use the correct release method when opening your instant pot after cooking. There are three common types of Instant Pot pressure release methods:

The Instant Pot Has So Many Buttons What Do They Mean And Why Do Most Recipes Just Use Pressure Cook Mode

Youll most likely use only a handful of buttons/settings: Saute, Pressure Cook , Keep Warm, Canceland + or . Most cookbooks and internet recipes are written using the Pressure Cook setting.

I generally use the Pressure Cook setting because I feel I have more control over the times and pressure levels and because people who own another brand of pressure cooker or multi-cooker can adapt my recipes easily.

However, the Instant Pot has many more buttons/settings like Egg,Rice, Meat, Multigrain, etc. Most of these buttons are just preset buttons with recommended cooking times and pressure levels.*

The buttons and presets are convenient if you use the same cooking settings every time you cook a particular type of food. For example, if you cook boiled eggs the same way every time, the Egg default setting might work for you.

When you change the factory defaults of a preset, many Instant Pot models remember the setting for next time. For example, suppose I want to pressure cook eggs using the Egg function. The default Egg pressure cooking time is 5 minutes.

I like to pressure cook eggs using my Instant Pot boiled egg recipe, which is for 2 minutes. I select the Egg function and change the pressure cook time to 2 minutes. The next time I select the Egg function, the time will default to 00:02 instead of 5 minutes.

Advantages Of Magic Release

This pressure release method is something of a compromise between the Natural Release and Quick Release methods. Its a good option to choose when youre not sure which method to use, or the Instant Pot recipe youre using isnt clear about how you should depressurize the pot.

Magic Release also mediates some of the disadvantages of the other two methods. Its faster than Natural Release and gentler than Quick Release, so you can eat sooner and have less of a mess to clean up afterward.

How Instant Is An Instant Pot

How to Cook Easy Instant Pot Sweet Potatoes

I wouldnt lie to you. Instant Pot is a misnomer. It does not cook food in an instant.

Here’s the catch: It takes time for the Instant Pot to come to pressure.

If a pot roast cooks for 30 minutes at pressure, the total time from start to finish might be more like 45 minutes or more. An Instant Pots heating element has less juice than the burners on your range, so it takes longer to heat food enough to get to pressure.

BUT! The ease of use frees you up to do other things. With most recipes, Instant Pots truly are set it and forget it. Lets say youre making a stir-fry, and youd like brown rice to go with it. Before you start prepping the stir-fry, put the rice and water in the Instant Pot, program it to cook for 22 minutes at pressure, then go about your business.

By the time youve chopped and stir-fried everything , your rice will have finished its cooking cycle, the pressure will have come down naturally, and the cooker will automatically switch to its Keep Warm functionso your perfectly cooked rice is waiting patiently for you at the ideal serving temperature.

How To Do A Pressure Cooker Natural Release

After the cooking cycle finished, wait until the Floating Valve completely drops before opening the lid.

Always turn the Venting Knob from Sealing Position to Venting Position to ensure all the pressure is released before opening the lid.

This pressure release method usually takes 10 25 minutes .

Whats the advantage?

Why?

Since the pressure is released gradually, there is less movement in the pressure cooker. Your stock and soup come out cleaner and food are more likely to stay intact.

Whats the catch?

  • A pot full of stock or soup takes very long to release pressure naturally.
  • If the recipe is designed for Quick Pressure Release, the food may overcook, as the cooking process continues during the natural release process.

The Hybrid of Quick Release and Natural Release

What Is Natural Release

Instant Pot natural release is when you allow the Instant Pot to cool down by itself, releasing steam slowly. When the food is done cooking, the Instant Pot will automatically release steam gradually until the float valve drops down. This could take up to 30 minutes.

We recommend natural release for soups and other food with high liquid content.

Tips For Using Instant Pot

We have a few expert tips that you can utilize to make the most of your instant pot.

  • Your instant pot comes with a wide array of functions. Make full use of these features to make scrumptious one-pot recipes. For example, instead of using a different utensil to sauté vegetables, you can use your instant pot for the same purpose.
  • You can adjust the temperature of the instant cooker according to your need. Different recipes demand different temperatures, and you can choose according to your recipe.
  • While boiling, steaming or pressure cooking, make sure that the food is submerged in the water. Use at least half or one cup of water, depending on the amount of food you are cooking. However, dont pour too much water inside the pot, it can result in soggy, overcooked food.
  • You may think that you can put only water in the instant pot to cook your food. But hey, you can also use liquids like broth and juice to cook your food. Instant pot perfectly cooks your food and infuses it with the aroma and goodness of the liquid that you are using. So if you are in the mood for some flavourful dish, try this out.

How Long Does The Instant Pot Take To Preheat

Lesson 4: How to Use “Natural Release” in an Instant Pot

The preheating time depends on the number of food items that you have placed inside the instant pot. Ideally, it should not take more than 15 minutes to preheat. It may take a few minutes more or less, but there is nothing to worry about it.

Wondering how you will get to know when the pot is preheated? The timer of the instant pot will start ticking right after the cooker preheats itself.

Seals Misaligned Or Damaged

If the sealing rings are misaligned or damaged, the Instant Pot will not take long to preheat.

If there is no sound or steam coming from the Instant Pot when it has reached its desired temperature, then something may be wrong with the heating element.

The same goes for if you are cooking at a lower-than-intended heat but all of your food is still under-cooked.

In both these cases, the heating element will need to be replaced in order for it to work again.

What Are The Benefits Of Using An Instant Pot

Instant pots combine a pressure cooker and a slow cooker for ease of use. Having multiple cooking appliances together is helpful as it occupies less space in the kitchen. It cooks your food for the right amount of time not too little or not too much. The temperature sensors inside keep track of the status of food and shut themselves off before food gets a chance to burn.

You can hasten the cooking process when you cook meat by using the pressure cooker feature. However, for vegetables, you will need to use a quick pressure release to prevent them from getting overcooked.

When Should I Use Natural Release

Instant Pot Natural Release or Quick Release?

When cooking dishes that have a lot of liquid, the Natural Release method is often the best option. As such, stews, pot roast, and especially soups generally benefit from the Natural Release process.

After the cooking cycle has finished, steam and pressure will begin to dissipate naturally. All the user needs to do is give the Instant Pot a little time, and then opening and accessing the food is safe and simple. Nevertheless, its essential to remember that the food will continue to cook during this process, so bear that in mind depending on the dish.

Is It Better To Let An Instant Pot Naturally Release

This is a question on the lips of people that have an interest in pressure cooking as they want to know if being patient and waiting for almost half an hour to access their food is worth it.

Natural Release is ideal for keeping a tidy kitchen because since the pressure in the pot is allowed to be released naturally and gradually, there would be less movement of the items inside. Fewer movements mean little chance of splashes, soups, and stocks staying intact and solid foods staying intact when the instant pot is opened.

Foods with high starchy content like porridge, foamy foods, or foods with high amounts of liquids like soups are the best candidates for natural pressure release.

Quick Release comes in handy when one wants to prevent overcooking or burning if the person cooking the food miscalculated the timing. One has to be careful when opening the instant pot during quick release so steam will not jump out at the person cooking and cause any burning incident.

Foods that are ideal for Quick Pressure Release are quick-cooking vegetables, corn on the cob, Broccoli, crabs, lobster, salmon, and other forms of seafood.

Natural Release is the better option when it comes to releasing pressure from instant pots because it gives the food being cooked its desired appearance and ensures it would not spill on the skin of the person that opens the appliance.

Should I Cancel Keep Warm Mode For A Natural Pressure Release No

Published: by Mike Vrobel · This post may contain affiliate links ·

In my Instant Pot FAQ, I have the following question:

Q: What about natural pressure release? When the Instant Pot finishes cooking, it switches to Warming mode is that OK with a natural pressure release? Or should I cancel it?A: Cancel warming mode to speed up natural pressure release.

I was reading the Instant Pot Community Facebook group, and saw a heated debate: Keep Warm and Natural Pressure Release. One side was strongly in the warming mode doesnt matter camp, the other was in the turn warming mode off group – and used my FAQ post as evidence.

After reading the debate, I started to wonder – am I wrong about warming mode? I assumed that turning off the heat would speed up the natural release – that the pot would lose heat quicker without any heat being added by warming mode.1In part, because thats how I learned to do it with a stove top cooker – turn off the heat and move the pot to an unlit burner so it cools down faster. The argument against cancelling Keep Warm mode is the pots thermostat. Warming mode keeps the temperature between 145°F and 172°F, so it wont turn the heat on until the temperature drops to 145°F. Thats well below the temperature where pressure will release.

In summary…Keep Warm mode doesnt affect natural pressure release. It finishes at about the same time either way, so dont bother canceling it. I was wrong in my Instant Pot FAQ Im sorry I gave you bad information.

When Do I Use A Natural Pressure Release

A natural pressure release is best used when youre cooking something with a lot of liquid or starch, like soups, stews, and porridge. As the steam in your Instant Pot rises, it carries along with it drops of liquid in these foods, which may be colored, sticky, and/or oily.

Natural release prevents this liquid from rising too quickly and making a mess by splattering across your kitchen. Just make sure the Instant Pot recipe you use takes the natural release into account in its timing, as the remaining heat can still cook your food as steam is released, with the potential to overcook it.
