I think hard boiled eggs are an underutilized food in the kitchen.

Not only are they an inexpensive source of protein, but there are so many things you can make with them!

But getting perfect hard boiled eggs every time can be a little tricky.

Dont get me wrongthere are several techniques for making hard boiled eggs, and none of them are particularly difficult.

The most obvious method is boiling, with different variations of that simple method. Some people keep the eggs boiling until they are fully cooked.

Some people boil for a set amount of time, then remove from heat to allow the eggs to finish cooking, still in the water but off of the heat .

Then there are those who make their hard boiled eggs in the oven, which is a technique I have never tried.

What If The Chicken Is Not Cooked

Chicken needs to reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit before safe to consume.

Once your cook time has elapsed and pressure has been released, check the internal temperature of your chicken breast. If less than 160 degrees, place the lid back on the pressure cooker and cook for an additional 2-5 minutes on high pressure.

If the chicken has reached 160 degrees, it will reach 165 degrees as it rests.

How To Cooks Eggs In The Instant Pot

I based my eggs on the popular “5-5-5” method for hard-cooked eggs in the Instant Pot. The idea is to put your eggs into a steamer basket and seal them inside your pressure cooker along with a cup or so of water. It takes about five minutes for the cooker to come up to high pressure, five minutes to cook the eggs, and then five minutes of natural pressure release before removing the eggs from the cookerhence the “5-5-5” method.

I found that this basic formula worked just fine, though it typically takes my pressure cooker closer to 10 minutes before fully pressurizing.

I also decided that I like the texture of 4-minute eggs better than 5-minute eggs. At four minutes, the whites are firm but soft and the yolk is cooked through but still creamy at five minutes, I felt like the whites started to become rubbery and the yolk was a little chalky. Give it a try both ways and see which you prefer.

    Instant Pot Shredded Chicken

    • Cook the chicken as the recipe directs.
    • Once cook time has elapsed and pressure has been released, remove the chicken breast from the instant pot and place it into a large mixing bowl along with ½ cup of the cooking liquid.
    • Shred the chicken, using two forks, a handheld mixer at medium speed, or a stand mixer at low speed. Alternatively, you can shred the chicken right in the inner pot of your instant pot using 2 forks or a handheld mixer.

Like many of you, I abandoned the dream of finding one surefire method for making consistently perfect hard boiled eggs some time ago. After trying a few too many “foolproof” tricks with spotty results, I relegated easy-peel eggs to the same category as unicorns and cheap airfare: nice to fantasize about, but if they were truly real, you’d think we’d have heard about it by now.

But that’s the thing about mythsjust when you’ve thrown your hands in the air and walked away, something new comes along to rekindle your hope. Like Fox Mulder, we want to believe.

For me, that something new was my pressure cooker and a friend’s improbable suggestion that I try using it to make a batch of eggs. Just like that, the dream was alive again.

    • Set the trivet that came with your Instant Pot in the bottom of the inner pot. Carefully lay your eggs around the trivet, I usually cook a dozen eggs at a time.
    • Pour in 1 ½ cups of water.
    • Close the lid and set the pot to pressure cook, on high, for 5 minutes.
    • While the eggs cook, prepare an ice bath by filling a large bowl with water and a few cups of ice.
    • Once the pot is done cooking let it do a 5 minute natural release, then release the rest of the pressure with a quick release.
    • When all the pressure is released take the lid off and carefully lift the trivet out of the pot and dunk the eggs directly into the ice bath, for 5 minutes.

Thats it! They are done, and they are perfect! Go ahead and try to peel one, the peel with slide off almost in one piece!

How To Make Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

    How to Make Hard

This recipe is really simple, but you may need to do some experimenting to find the cook time that cooks your eggs just how you like them. Ive found that eggs can be finicky. You may need to adjust the cook time slightly depending on the size of your eggs, the age or quality of your eggs, and even your particular Instant Pot.

The method for making hard boiled eggs depends on whether you have a 6 quart or 8 quart Instant Pot. For most recipes, the size of your Instant Pot doesnt matter, but eggs are an exception. Ive tested this recipe again and again in both my 6 quart and 8 quart pots, and Ill share what Ive learned to help you achieve the best results.

For perfectly set hard boiled eggs:

    • 6 Quart Instant Pot: 5 minutes pressure cook time + 5 minutes natural release
    • 8 Quart Instant Pot: 5 minutes pressure cook time + quick release

Why do eggs take longer in a 6 quart Instant Pot? Really, they dont. Since the 8 quart Instant Pot is larger, it takes more time to come to pressure before the cook time starts, as well as more time to release pressure after cooking. That means that your eggs are getting a few extra minutes of cooking time. To adjust for this, if youre using a 6 quart Instant Pot, youll add on 5 minutes of natural pressure release time after the cook cycle ends. The eggs will continue to cook while the pressure naturally releases.

How Long To Boil The Eggs In The Instant Pot

To make hard boiled eggs, you need to boil the eggs for about 8 to 9 minutes depending on your preference of texture for the hard boiled eggs.

I usually do 8 minutes for hard boiled eggs and then do a natural pressure release of 5 minutes, after which I manually release the pressure.

If you want soft boiled eggs, you may go for the 5-5-5 method where you boil the eggs for 5 minutes and then do a manual pressure release after 5 minutes of natural pressure release and then give a cold ice water bath for the boiled eggs for 5 minutes.

You can change the consistency and texture of your boiled eggs by adjusting the time accordingly.

In this recipe for boiled eggs in the instant pot, we are going to cook the eggs for 8 minutes followed by a careful and gradual manual pressure release after waiting for a natural pressure release for 5 minutes.

Then we immediately transfer the boiled eggs for cold ice water bath and wait until the eggs are completely cooled, before peeling the eggs.

So here is how you can make easy and delicious boiled eggs in the instant pot without using trivet or rack.

How Many Eggs Can You Hard Boil In The Instant Pot

Up to 75 large eggs. Thats right, you can do almost 6 ½ dozen eggs at once and this big batch of eggs will take the same time to cook as if you were only cooking 1 dozen eggs. Ah-mazing!

There are a couple of things to be aware of though before cooking this many eggs. The instant pot will take longer to come to pressure vs a few minutes to come to pressure when cooking a small number of eggs.

You will have a few cracked eggs when you cook a large amount, but thats ok, they will still be cooked. Its worth the few cracked shells because of the number of eggs you just cooked at once!

    Easy Peel Hard Boiled Eggs

The most interesting thing Alex and I found as we experimented with this Instant Pot hard boiled eggs recipe is that it makes easy peel hard boiled eggs! This is not something we were expecting, but it was an added bonus to boiling eggs in an Instant Pot.

How to peel hard boiled eggs? For this recipe you can gently tap the bottom of the egg until the shell crushes, then remove the shell in pieces. We used to gently roll the egg long-wise to crush the shell all around, but this can sometimes cause the white of the egg to break. For this Instant Pot hard boiled eggs recipe, the eggs are so easy to peel that you only need to tap one end to get it started.

Important Tips For Using Instant Pot At Higher Altitudes

Instant Pot HARD BOILED EGGS Using The 5-5-5 Method
    • If making Instant Pot Yogurt, you do not need to make adjustments to the recipe.
    • If you are sauteing or thickening a recipe AFTER pressure cook time has elapsed, like in Instant Pot Beef Stew, be sure to watch liquid level carefully, you may need to add in ¼ to ½ cup more liquid, as it will take longer for your recipe to thicken at higher altitude.

Insert The Basket In The Pot

You will need to have a basket. The basket will elevate the eggs from the surface of the pot.

If you place the eggs directly in the pot, it will work, but it will burn the shell. It doesnt affect the taste too much, but you will get brown spots on the egg shells and on the eggs themselves. Same goes for any part of the egg touching the sides.

If you use the basket and an egg is leaning up against the side, you will get some slight browning on the shell, but not as badly as if you just placed the egg straight into the pot. Straight into the pot will produce the brown burned spots on the shell that will also transfer to the hard boiled egg. If it is leaning against the side, you will get slight browning on the side, but it hasnt transferred to the egg.

Does that make sense? I hope it does. That is the one main issue with the oven eggs brown spots from the shell getting burned. Like I said, it doesnt really affect taste, but its not a beautiful egg anymore.

The point is, if you have the basket rack, this is going to produce the best results!

    Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs Faq:

How long do hard boiled eggs last? Up to a week in the fridge, if they are unpeeled. Or up to 4 days if they are peeled.

How long to hard boil eggs vs. soft boil eggs? In the Instant Pot, cook the eggs for 5 minutes to hard boil or 3 minutes to soft boil, followed by 3 minutes of natural release, followed by a quick release.

How to peel hard boiled eggs? Just give the egg a gentle tap or roll on the counter to break the shell. Then loosen and peel off the shell with your fingers.

Do older eggs work better? Ive found this to be the case with the stovetop method, but the Instant Pot seems to be more forgiving. I often use just-purchased eggs for this method and they always turn out great!

What size of Instant Pot do you use? I have only tested this method on the 6-quart Instant Pot that I own. Cooking times/amounts may vary with a different size or brand of pressure cooker.

It simply means you cook the eggin your electric pressure cooker on high pressure for 5 minutes

Do natural pressure release for 5 minutes then

Give it a cold-water bath foranother 5 minutes. I do not often wait around for the whole of 5 minutes as Ifind any time from 2 minutes good enough. Also, I dont use Iced water bath, Ijust use cold water from the tap or simply run the boiled eggs under cold waterif I am using just one or 2.

Note that 5 5 5 method would notwork for soft boiled eggs. You only need to pressure cook for 3 minutes
