What Are The Cons

Lesson 4: How to Use “Natural Release” in an Instant Pot

You might be wondering what the drawbacks of this method are. There arent many, but keep in mind that if your instant pot is filled with stock or soup, it can take a very long time to release pressure naturally.

As we mentioned earlier, natural pressure release is a longer process. You may end up overcooking recipes that demand quick pressure release, as the instant pot will keep cooking during the natural release process.

Disadvantages Of Natural Release

One of the main drawbacks of the Natural Release method is that it can take a long time! If youre cooking a giant pot of chili for dinner and youre hungry right now, the time it takes for the pressure to drop naturally will feel like an eternity.

Its also not a good idea to use Natural Release when pressure cooking foods that are easily overcooked. Delicate foods like seafood, fruits, and vegetables may turn into mush in the time it takes for your pressure cooker to depressurize on its own.

What Is A Quick Pressure Release

This is when you turn the pressure release valve/quick release valve to “open” or “venting” at the completion of the cooking cycle. This forces the steam to release from the Instant Pot quickly.

When you hear the “beep/s” that the cooking cycle has been completed, immediately switch the pressure/steam release valve to “venting”. This opens the vent and allows all accumulated steam/pressure to release from the Instant Pot right away.

Use caution when switching the pressure release/quick release valve to venting. Use a pot holder or silicone glove to avoid burns and always keep your face/hands away from the steam release valve.

You will know the Quick Pressure Release is complete when you see/hear the float valve drop down. Once that has happened it is safe to open the Instant Pot.

When to use Quick Pressure Release

A Quick Pressure Release means pressure/steam within the Instant Pot is released very quickly so its perfect for foods that are delicate and those that you don’t want to cook longer than the cooking cycle .

How To Do A Timed Natural Release

Instant Pot Natural Pressure Release vs. Quick Release ...
  • Once the pressure cooking is done, the instant pot will beep and begin counting up the minutes if it is kept in the keep warm mode.
  • Allow around 10 to 15 minutes to pass, while the cooker naturally releases pressure.
  • Once some time has passed, release pressure like you do with the quick release method.
  • The timed natural release process can take 10 to 20 minutes. You can keep the Keep Warm mode on or off while doing a quick release in bursts. If you wish to turn this mode off, press Cancel.

What Is Natural Release Instant Pot

As the name suggests, you need to leave your instant pot to work on its own for this method. Your instant pot will release the pressure once it depressurizes on its own.

Your instant pot will signal you with a beep stating that it has completed the cooking cycle and will automatically start releasing the pressure.

To figure out if your instant pot has released its steam completely, completely check the float valve for this. The natural release process is complete if it drops down.

Once the pressure is released it is now safe to open the lid. Remember, you will only be able to open the lid if the pot is depressurized. Never try to open the lid before this process.

How Does An Instant Pot Works

The cook cycle starts and the instant pot begins to build pressure after you set the instant pot.

After pressure has been attained, the valve opens up and you hear a beep. After 5 minutes, the pot will start to make a hissing sound as the steam escapes. As the pressure further builds up, you will observe some steam coming out of the steam release valve.

If you are using the instant pot the first time you might observe a smell of plastic.

After 5 minutes, the instant pot beeps again a few times. The instant pot then switches to warming mode and the ascending numbers begin to appear. An L will appear next to the number after the cook cycle has ended.

The instant pot also comes with a steamer called a trivet. The trivet holds food so that it does not submerge in the liquid below. Trivet is used for pressure cooking and for cooking 2 dishes at the same time.

Well, basically, its a simple concept for leaving the instant pot on after the instant pot has beeped and told you that your food is cooked.

Its a way of carrying on the cooking process a bit like when you cook on the stove and then you turn the heat down to a simmer.

How To Do A Natural Release

    1. Upon completing the cooking cycle, your Instant Pot beeps to signal it completed the cooking cycle.

    2. Most Instant Pot models automatically begin to use NPR.

    3. The process is complete when you see or hear the float valve drop down.

    4. Taking the lid off of your Instant Pot vents any remaining pressure.

    What Is Natural Release

Instant Pot natural release is when you allow the Instant Pot to cool down by itself, releasing steam slowly. When the food is done cooking, the Instant Pot will automatically release steam gradually until the float valve drops down. This could take up to 30 minutes.

We recommend natural release for soups and other food with high liquid content.

Q: What Is A Quick Pressure Release

A quick pressure release is when you turn the pressure release switch to the Venting position and let the steam to release quickly when the cook time ends. This will result in a strong jet of steam coming from the pressure release valve. This is normal. If drops of liquid or foam start to emerge from the pressure release valve, simply switch the valve back to the Sealed position and use an Intermittent Pressure Release .

    • Instant Pot Duo: Turn the pressure release handle from Sealing to Venting .
    • Ninja Foodi: Turn the pressure release valve from Seal to Vent.
    • Crockpot Express: Turn the steam release valve from the Closed/Seal position to the Open/Release position .
    • Power Pressure Cooker XL: Turn the pressure valve from the Lock position to the Open position .
    • Fagor Pressure Cooker: Turn the valve from Pressure to Steam.
    • Cuisinart: Turn the valve from Pressure to Pressure Release.
    • Pampered Chef Quick Cooker: Press the Steam Release Button on the lid handle.

Other pressure cookers may have different labels, but its the same basic principle. Turn the valve to allow the steam to escape / pressure to release.

When the pressure is fully released, the float valve will drop and the lid will unlock to open. For safety reasons, the pressure cooker will not open until the pressure is released and the float valve has dropped.

Keep your face and hands away from the steam as its released. Dont release pressure under hanging cabinets, which can be damaged by the steam.

    What Causes It To Break

Instant Pot Natural Pressure Release vs. Quick Release ...

Its likely that you might not know that the natural release mechanism of your instant pot is broken until youre already cooking something inside it. In that case, youll have an instant pot thats very high pressure, which can be a dangerous thing indeed.

When cooking with an instant pot, you first add some liquid to the cooking ingredients. This liquid turns to steam, increasing the internal pressure of the instant pot. Natural release just means that you allow the internal pressure of the instant pot to slowly release through the steam vent which is included in the lid of the pot.

Over the course of fifteen minutes, the pressure will equalize, making it safe to open the instant pot.

What Does The Instant Pot Natural Release Do

The natural release function of your Instant Pot is an incredibly useful feature. It allows your food to stop cooking gradually, and as a result, have a more intense flavor and turn softer too.

Youll need to keep one little thing in mind though. When youre planning to let the Instant Pot depressurize using the natural release function, youll need to reduce the cooking time, since the food will continue cooking inside for as long as it takes for the pressure to be completely released.

If you dont do this, you might end up overcooking your food.

When Should You Use Natural Pressure Release

As this method takes its own time to release the pressure from the instant pot, it is recommended to be used for primarily liquid foods like soups or foods that can form foam like beans, potatoes, and oatmeal.

While the pressure is released gradually, the food continues to sit in the instant pot. If you try to quickly release the pressure, especially while cooking liquid or foamy foods, the steam and the food can come out from the same release vent creating a mess in your kitchen.

Natural release instant pots are also a great option for roasting foods such as meats. Remember, the instant pot is still cooking your food while it is releasing the steam naturally. Leaving your meat to cook this way will allow it to rest and be more tender.

    Turning The Instant Pot Off

There are those who will unplug the pot to allow for the natural release of pressure. Some people will leave the cooker plugged in. At this point, youll notice the display will show L0:00. The L here stands for elapsed time.

If you leave the pot plugged in, it will automatically switch to the Keep Warm mode. But take note that whether the pot is turned on or not, the keep warm setting wont affect the amount of time it will take for the pot to release the pressure naturally.

Its all basically up to you on what you prefer. Personally, Id prefer for the pot to be plugged in so I can see for how long it has already been done.

    Disadvantages Of Magic Release

Instant Pot Natural Pressure Release and Quick Release Explained–Instant Pot Tips

The disadvantages you might experience from using Magic Release would depend on what food you were cooking. If you were cooking a big roast, it would probably turn out slightly less tender than it would if you had used Natural Release.

If you were cooking a big pot of grains and then used Magic Release, you might see minor spurts of liquid or food coming out of the valve initially

  • Once pressure cooking is done, the pot will beep and begin counting up the minutes if it is kept in the keep warm mode.
  • Move the steam release valve to vent for a second and bring it back again to the sealing position. Wait for a couple of seconds.
  • Next, repeat this process till the steam becomes less forceful. You can now follow the quick release method to depressurize the instant pot completely.
  • Wait till the float valve drops down.
  • Press Cancel once the steam is released completely
  • It is now safe to open the lid. Open by turning it counterclockwise.
  • A quick release in bursts can take up to 5 minutes. You can keep the Keep Warm mode on or off while doing a quick release in bursts. If you wish to turn this mode off, press Cancel.

    Advantages Of Natural Release

Using Natural Release, the pressure inside the Instant Pot drops gradually over time. Theres less movement going on inside the pressure cooker, which can be a very good thing when your pot is extremely full or youre cooking something frothy like beans or grains.

The Natural Release method is also useful when youre cooking big cuts of red meat. The slow and steady release of pressure gives the meat time to rest and reabsorb its own moisture, resulting in juicer and more tender meats.

When Should You Use Quick Pressure Release

A quick pressure release method works best when you want to stop the pressure cooking quickly. Go with this technique for cooking delicate foods that can otherwise break when exposed to high pressure.

It is also ideal for foods that you dont wish to overcook. Foods like vegetables, poultry, or pasta can get mushy if cooked for more time than needed. A quick pressure release proves beneficial here.

The quick release method is handy when you have to add ingredients in the inner pot in the middle of the cooking process. Add the required ingredients after quickly releasing the steam and program the instant pot to continue pressure cooking after closing the lid.

This is the quickest pressure release method, but you should also take certain precautions while using the quick release method. Dont use quick release for liquid foods like soups as it may splatter along with the steam while creating a huge mess in your kitchen.

Also, keep your hands away while the steam is being released. As the pressurized steam is heated above the boiling point, it is hot enough to even burn your skin severely.

There are two ways to release the pressure quickly:

  • Take the instant pot outside if youre unsure whether the contents will splatter around and release the pressure quickly. This will even avoid the smell of what youve cooked from spreading around your home.
  • What Is Natural Release Time Of The Instant Pot

Lesson 4: How to Use " Natural Release" in an Instant Pot ...

The natural release time depends on the size of the pot and also on what is cooked inside it.

Larger Instant Pots build up high pressure than their smaller counterparts and will take more time to release pressure. The natural release takes more time for liquid-based food like soup compared to other non-liquid varieties.

    Advantages Of Quick Release

One advantage of Quick Release is that it stops the cooking process pretty much right away. This is especially useful when cooking seafood, fruits, and vegetables, because they can easily end up overcooked during a more gradual release of pressure.

Another advantage is right in the name: its quick! It may take a minute or two for the float valve to drop depending on how full your Instant Pot is, but itll be a great deal faster than if you allowed the pressure to drop naturally.

    General Rule Of Thumb

Most recipes should tell you which method to use. This is because how much time you allow the pot to depressurize should be taken into account in the recipe. Which way you choose can have a big affect on the outcome of the dish.

However, if you come across a recipe that doesnt specify which method to use, you can follow these general principles:

    • For food like pork roast, beans, rice, soup, and things that are mostly liquid, like bone broth, use natural release.
    • When cooking eggs, vegetables, delicate foods, or ingredients that have a preferred temperature range, use quick release.
