What To Do If Your Instant Pot Gives A Burn Warning:

  • Power downThe first step is also the simplest: press the cancel button to turn your Instant Pot off.
  • Check the steam valveIf your steam valve was set to sealing position, carefully turn it to the venting position to release the steam. If your steam valve was supposed to be in the sealing position but ended up in the venting position, this is probably what activated the burn notice.
  • Check the ringOnce enough steam has been released, open the Instant Pot’s lid and check if the ring is dirty, damaged, or just inserted improperly. Next, check the float valve and make sure it’s clean.
  • Check for burned foodStir the food to see if anything has burnt and stuck to the pot. Smaller burned areas can simply be taken out, but large burned areas require more damage control. If a large amount of food in your Instant Pot is burned, remove whatever isn’t burnt and put it in a clean container. Once the inner pot has cooled down enough, remove it and thoroughly clean it.
  • Keep inspectingCheck the bottom of your inner pot and the heating element for burnt food or residue, and clean if necessary.
  • RehydrateThe rest of the food will need some liquid before you resume cooking. Make sure there’s at least one cup of liquid in your inner pot.
  • Double-check and restartReturn the inner pot to its base. Tightly close the lid and adjust your steam valve to the correct position. Restart the pressure cooking process.

Things Not To Do With Your Instant Pot

#1: Dont add thickeners . Youre going to be tempted to add in flour or cornstarch to your Instant Pot to thicken your soup or sauce. And youll be able to do thateventually. But dont add those thickeners at the beginning . Add the thickeners after the food has pressure cooked. If you do add these ingredients they will burn to the bottom of the pot and you may get the burn error message.

#2: Dont underestimate how long it will take to cook a recipe. Just because its called an Instant Pot doesnt mean its instant! There are 3 time components to a pressure cooker recipe.

    • Building pressure
    • Pressure cooking
    • Pressure releasing

The time that the Instant Pot takes to build pressure can depend on a few different factors I usually give myself 10 minutes for the pot to pressurize. More about that in this video:

The pressure cooking time for a recipe is the easy part of the recipebecause you can know exactly how long that part will take.

The third part is the pressure release time. Watch this video if you are unfamiliar with quick release and natural pressure release.

Add these three components together to estimate how long a recipe will take to cook. But also realize that once the food is in the pot you have freedom! Get chores done, emails checked, the dishes washed and all the while your food is cooking.

    Your Steam Valve Isn’t Sealed

A pressure cooker can’t pressure cook without steam. And while there are plenty of recipes that require the valve set at vent, your pressure cooking process is at risk if there isn’t enough, well, pressure. Additionally, the steam valve can help prevent the liquid inside from evaporating and drying whatever you’re cooking out. Always be sure to adjust the pressure valve to the appropriate setting before you start cooking.

What Do I Do If My Instant Pot Says Burn

Your Instant Pot automatically turns off once it detects a burn in the inner pot, immediately taking care of the most pressing issue. Sometimes, your Instant Pot will cool down quickly and resume cooking on its own. But in most cases, it’s good to have a plan with damage control. And remember, there’s no reason to panic.

    What About Depressurizing

Unfortunately, theres no way to make a pressure cooker release pressure more quickly. Depressurizing takes as long as it takes. Some recipes take longer than others.

Just know that it WILL release all the pressure and you WILL be able to open the lid eventually.

Use the depressurizing time to set the table, light some candles, turn on some pretty music, and set the tone and atmosphere for a lovely, pressure cooked meal.

I hope youre convinced that the Instant Pot really does save time and can consistently give you and your family delicious and nourishing meals, side dishes, and desserts with less effort!

How I Use My Instant Pot

Ive cycled my way through all of the DUOs functions and Ive put some Instant Pot hacks to the test. Of all the Instant Pots features, I use the pressure-cooking function the most. Using my Instant Pot as a pressure cooker means steel-cut oats are a breakfast possibility on weekday mornings. It also gives me fast, low-effort dinners with very few dishes to wash and allows me to make lots of shredded meat like pulled pork and barbacoa without having to plan ahead.

While I think the slow cooker function works well, Ive found myself using this feature less and less over the years, and these days I rarely use it, pulling out my larger slow cooker instead. As Meghan pointed out a while ago, its totally worth getting a it you plan to use it as a slow cooker with regularity. If I had that lid, maybe Id be more inclined to use my Instant Pot as a slow cooker?

5 Things Not To Do With Your Instant Pot

Conventional recipes can also be adapted for the multicooker. Its not exact, but you can get good results by following these guidelines.

  • For Pressure Cooking:;Cut the liquid by at least half or even three-quarters. You wont have any of the evaporation happening in the pot. A very rough estimate is to plan on about a third of the standard cooking time for meats, vegetables and grains, with beans taking a quarter of the standard cook time.

For Slow Cooking:; You dont get as much evaporation in a slow cooker as you do in the oven. Double or quadruple the cooking time, depending on if youre using the high or low setting.

For Both Methods:;If you end up with a thin sauce, open the cooker and use the sauté function to allow some of the liquid to evaporate.
