Whats The Difference Between A Convection Oven And An Air Fryer

Instant Pot Vortex 6

In principle, they are the same: hot air that is blown around in a chamber to create even heating. Convection is the natural rise and fall of heat thats caused by uneven temperatures. Most household ovens have heating elements, which is that coil of wire on the top and bottom of the oven chamber .

The current is converted into slow, even, radiating heat. This heat rises, and the fan in the back of the convection oven will blow the air around for temperature consistency. However, the air fryers generated heat is pulled up with the fan, so there is no direct heat source on the food. Its dispersed on the outside of the chamber and then ascends from the open bottom to heat from all around making it gentler processes for the food.

Because air fryers have smaller chambers and higher speed air circulation than a convection oven, it takes less time than a traditional convection oven to bake/fry foods. Recipes that say foods need to be heated for 10 minutes may only require 6 minutes in an air fryer.

What Are Air Fryers Good For

For the most part, air fryers work like convection ovens. They cook your food using the Maillard reaction: they use a fan to blow hot air over your food to brown it. Its similar to how you might toast a marshmallow over a campfire.

Since they are similar to convection ovens, air fryers are basically superfluous if you already have a convection oven. However, there are a few advantages air fryers have over most convection ovens:

  • Theyre Smaller Depending on the model you purchase, your air fryer will fit under a cabinet and take up less room than a toaster oven.
  • They Cook Faster Air fryers require minimal preheating.
  • Theyre Energy Efficient Rather than heating up your house by turning the oven on, the air fryer keeps the heat localized in its small compartment.
  • Theyre Less Expensive Most convection ovens and convection toaster ovens will cost you more than the top air fryer brands.

Air Fryer Vs Instant Pot: What Can You Cook

How to Use the Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid | A First Time Users Guide and Review | MyRecipes

Lets start with the basics: What the heck is an Instant Pot and how does an air fryer work?

An Instant Pot is an electric pressure cooker and multicooker, while an air fryer is a countertop convection over that essentially fries your food with super hot air and a little oil.

You can use both the air fryer and the Instant Pot to prep some of the same foods, but generally speaking, air fryers are better used for foods you want to crisp or dry out, like healthier versions of French fries, fried chicken, or apple crisps, says Krista Maguire, RD, CSSD, Nutrition Manager at Beachbody.

An Instant Pot is best used for dishes with liquid, like soups and stews, chili, grains, casseroles, and one-pot dishes, she explains.

Here are some examples of foods that are best used in each:

Note: Air Frying Does Not Guarantee A Healthful Diet

There has been a lot of talk about how air fryers are revolutionizing peoples diets. While 100 grams of fried and battered chicken breast contains 13.2 g of fat, compared to just 0.39 g of fat in an oven-roasted chicken breast, you reasonably see how that can be a sound conclusion.

You are using just 1 tablespoon of cooking oil rather than multiple cups, producing similar results as deep fryer with a fraction of the fat and calories.;This lowering oil intake can be beneficial for a persons health dealing with heart disease and inflammation. However, it is not guaranteed that air-fried chicken is more healthful than roasted, grilled, slow-cooked, or pan-seared chicken.

Just replacing all deep-fried foods with air-fried foods in no way guarantees a healthful diet. People should focus on a diet filled with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean protein. Maintaining a variety of foods and cooking methods will help people obtain a more healthful diet.

This really chalks up to how you and your family cook most of the time. If youre constantly using multiple appliances you might find that the versatility of this appliance doesnt fit the bill. As mentioned above, if you cant cook multiple foods with different cooking needs at the same time,;then maybe sticking to separate appliances will better suit your needs.

If youre typically only using one appliance at a time to get dinner on the table, though, then having one appliance to store that covers just about anything you could want to cook is worth it.

What Are Instant Pots Good For

Though Instant Pot is a specific brand of electric pressure cooker, Erin, my lovely wife, tells me that no one knows what the heck Im talking about when I refer to electric pressure cookers. So, for ease of communication, I will use the blanket term instant pot to refer to all brands of electric pressure cookers. Of course, my mom will still think that Im referring to a marijuana delivery service.

The instant pots main selling point is that it can make delicious and nutritious meals in a matter of minutes by using a combination of heat and pressure. You should keep in mind that cooking times are a bit misleading, though. A manufacturer may claim that they can cook raw chicken from frozen to safe in ten minutes, but that time does not include how long it takes for the appliance to get up to pressure and depressurize afterward. This can take fifteen minutes or more. Its still pretty fast, but not as fast as youre led to believe.

Are Air Fryer Multi

Fortunately, there is an alternative to choosing one of the two incredibly helpful appliances. If you want to have the capabilities of both an air fryer and an Instant Pot multi-cooker, you should consider hybrids.

Hybrids are appliances that can function as a normal multi-cooker, but when needed, it can be converted into an air fryer. You basically get a 2-in-1 with these.

Typically, air fryer multi-cooker hybrids like the Instant Pot Duo Crisp come with two lids.

One is a pressure-cooking lid for when you need it to perform as a multi-cooker. It is designed and performed exactly like the lid of a normal Instant Pot.

Where the magic comes in is in the other lid, called an air fryer lid. This lid contains its own heating element and blowing fan to create a convection effect. Put it on your multi-cooker and you can fry away.

As for food quality, hybrids can produce food with comparable quality to a full-on air fryer or multi-cooker.

Although hybrids are typically a little bit more expensive, it will be worth the extra investment.

How to Use An Instant Pot – Instant Pot 101 – DUO CRISP AIR FRYER

While its very similar to the 4-in-1 air fryer, the standout feature in the Vortex Plus is the dehydrator. If youre looking for a reliable air fryer that can also produce perfectly dried fruits and veggies, the Vortex Plus is for you. Just like the 4-in-1, the Vortex Plus has a roomy, 6-quart basket with a nonstick coating for easy cleanup. Equipped with pre-programmed settings and a temperature-controlling dial, the interface is also super user-friendly. The only downside to this model is the broiler function, which is pre-set to 400 degrees F and for two minutes and didnt perform well for us in testing.

You have to be careful with the ingredients that have high sugar content as a burn warning may trigger.

Also, you have to be careful when you cook foods like cranberries, oatmeal, noodles, rhubarb or applesauce because these often foam, spatter or froth. This can lead to clogging. Whenever using the appliance to prepare these foods, the inner pot should only be filled up to the 1/2 line.

Also, you should follow a trusted recipe and you need to clean the pressure cooker parts and the lid after use.

What Is An Air Fryer And What Is It Good For

Air fryers sound like magical machines: They fry food with little to no oil?! Well, sort of. Air frying is technically not frying at all because, in order to really fry food, you have to submerge it in oil. Instead, air fryers work more like small convection ovens. These machines have a heating element and a fan that blows the hot air around the cooking chamber. The air is swirled around super-quickly in a circular fashion, and the food usually sits in a perforated basket. Both of these factors work together to result in perfect crisping for all sorts of things not just;mozzarella sticks and chicken wings, either.

Weve found that nearly every vegetable tastes better after a quick 15-minute sting in an air fryer. Brussels sprouts cook up the best with a crispy exterior and the most tender insides youll ever have. We also recommend broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, and more. You can even bake quick breads and cookies in your air fryer.

How The Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid Works

Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid, 6

If youre used to Instant Pots multi-cookers, cooking with this lid will feel pretty comfortable. When cooking you won’t be able to see into the base of the pot, but you are able to take the lid off to check on the progress of your food mid-way through. The lid is a little heavy , so you don’t have to worry about it moving around during cooking. It’s important to note that you cannot turn on the air fryer lid and Instant Pot base at the same time . Temperature, time and cooking features are all programmed through the lid. Make sure you have a stainless steel inner pot to place the air fryer basket into the air fryer lid is not compatible with a nonstick ceramic insert.

How Does It Work

When you first unpack the box you will have the base unit, where all buttons are located, then you have the pot which goes into the base unit, the lid, power cord, condensation collector, and some accessories including a trivet and measuring cups.

On the lid there is a sliding pressure release handle, there is also a valve that indicates when the pot is pressurized. The condensation collector should be attached to the back of the pot from the outside.

Lets say that we will be cooking some vegetables. What you need is to add water to the vegetables in the pot. Unless you add water, your instant pot wont pressurize. Put the lid on and make sure its locked tightly.

There are lots of functions on the Instant Pot, however, dont let that scare you off. You might need some time to learn how it works, but once you master it, it becomes your favorite kitchen tool.

Once you set your timer and your cooking mode, the pot typically takes around 25 minutes to pressurize, more or less, depending on what youre cooking. Be patient with it. Once its done, unseal the lid and wait until it releases the steam.
