Choose Foods With Similar Cook Times

Introducing the new Instant Pot Pro 10-in-1 Multi Pressure Cooker

Choose recipes with similar cook timesfor instance chicken breasts diced into large bite-size pieces cook in 3 or 4 minutes with a 10-minute natural pressure release, which is an excellent match for the cook time of white rice! For example, you can make my Indian Butter Chicken and rice at the same time! Simply cut the chicken thighs into large bite-size pieces so they cook more quickly. Then add a trivet and rice as directed in the white rice recipe below and reduce the High Pressure cook time to 4 minutes with a 10-minute natural release.

Chicken is also an excellent match for pastas. To figure out a cook time for pasta, simply take the time listed on the box, divide in half and then subtract a minute.

I love to serve my Chicken Lazone over pasta, so when I want to use the pot-in-pot method, I saute the chicken in the cooking pot, then transfer the sauteed chicken to my cake pan. Ill wipe out the pot, then cook my spaghetti in the bottom of the cooking pot with just enough water to cover the noodles. Ill rest the cake pan on a tall trivet in the cooker and cook for 3 minutes with a quick pressure release.

How Long To Steam In The Instant Pot

It can be difficult to get the steaming time just right in an Instant Pot, and you may need to use some trial and error to figure out the right setting for how you like your food steamed.

Check out the Instant Pot steam time estimates in the charts below to get started.

It is important to remember that the Instant Pot will begin heating the water and producing steam while it builds up pressure, and that the food will start steaming during this time.

This means that there are some foods that have a 0 minute cooking time because they steam quickly and so are fully cooked by the time the Instant Pot has reached full pressure.

Theres An App For That

The Instant Pot app is great for controlling cooking, checking timing, and monitoring progress along the way. Its free and incredibly intuitive, as well as a great helper when you have zero creative juices on whats for dinner. The app provides access to more than 1,000 preprogrammed recipes that you can search by ingredients.

Change The Size Of The Meat

Large cuts of meat require much longer in the pressure cooker than that same cut of meat diced into bite-size pieces. So if you want to cook a side with a longer cook time, consider changing up the size of the meat. For instance, the thinly sliced beef strips in Beef and Broccoli only take 12 minutes at high pressure, so theyre too long for white rice and too short for brown rice. However, beef cut into 2- or 3-inch cubes would need about 20 minutes at high pressure, making them a good match for brown rice, which has a 22-minute cook time and a 20-minute natural pressure release.

Timing Adjustments For High

Instant Pot 6qt Pro 10

The pressure inside the cooker is affected by external pressure. If you live a high-altitude the cooking time for pressure-cooked foods will also be affected.

formula to adjust high-altitude pressure cooking times

Increase pressure cooking time by 5% for every 1000 ft above 2000 ft elevation . Multiply the recommended cooking time by the number on the table. The result will likely be a decimal value just round that up to the next minute.

Reheating Food In The Instant Pot / Pressure Cooker

Youll use the same pot-in-pot method listed above to reheat food in the Instant Pot / Pressure Cooker.

  • insert a trivet
  • add food youre reheating into a dish
  • use a sling to lower the dish onto the trivet If you use this sling, it works as your trivet and your sling.
  • use a 5 to 10 minute cook time, depending on what youre reheating

It Heats Up Faster Than The Original

If there was a complaint about the first Instant Pot it was the overpromise/underdeliver of the instant aspect. At times, the heating time was longer than expected. Thanks to an upgraded stainless-steel inner pot with an extra-thick aluminum layer, I did notice faster heating times. The flat bottom was also great for even sautéing.

The Inner Pot Is More User

How to Use the Instant Pot Pro

Hooray for the stay-cool handles on the side that help you lift out the center pot after cooking without reaching for a potholder. There are also incredibly helpful measurements on the inside of the inner liner.

Pro tip: Stand your pressure cooking lid up to keep it off your countertop by inserting the left or right lid fin into one of the corresponding lid holders on the base to stand it up and save space.

Other Electric Pressure Cookers We Tested

If you love the Instant Pot Duo and also love using an air fryer, this may be just the electric pressure cooker option for you. We found it performed identically to the Duo when it came to pressure-cooking our three recipes, and the interface is also essentially the same as the Duo, though it has four more cooking functions than that model .

However, its about twice as heavy as the Duo, and with the air fryer lid , it requires a lot of vertical storage and counter space . Included are a broil/dehydrating tray, multi-level air fryer basket, air fryer basket base, protective pad, storage cover and rack. So, if you think an air fryer-pressure cooker combo would save room and youd use it frequently, this model is certainly worth considering. Otherwise, the Duo will work just fine and the Pro Plus will perform even better.

Instant Pot Pro Review: Design

Instant Pot 6qt Pro 10

Instant Pots are not usually known for their attractive design. However, the Instant Pot Pro has a stylish, black and stainless steel finish, making it look more premium than its counterparts. This upgrade is also reflected in the large LED display with a chrome control dial. The one-touch control panel has the standard presets including Slow Cook, Pressure Cook, Saute, Steam and Sous Vide you can select one of the 28 presets on the large display. You can also manually adjust the temperature and cooking duration should you choose not to use a preset.

Another difference to other models is there are five favorite buttons where you can program your own recipes. This is handy for cooks with regular, signature recipes. With everything displayed on the screen though, it can look a bit overwhelming. However, its easy to read.

The 8-quart size provides a generous capacity for families or cooking up large quantities. However, it is quite large and bulky for small countertops, in which case, the 6-quart capacity might be the better choice. For those worried about the weight, the inner pot comes with Easy-Grab, silicone handles so you can lift it safely out of the base with ease. Plus, it comes with an upgraded steam release switch that makes it easier to change from sealed to venting, with a handy cover to reduce inevitable splashes and noise.

Stove Top Pressure Cooker Adjustments For Heat Source

  • Electric or HalogenCooktop Since these cooktops do not change temperature quickly and could result in scorching the food. Start the pressure cooker on a high-heat burner while pre-heating a low-heat burner. When the cooker reaches pressure, turn off the high-heat burner and carefully move the cooker to the low-heat burner to maintain pressure.
  • InductionCooktop Bring cooker to pressure on medium heat setting, supervise for the first few minutes at pressure as the cooker may need additional adjustments. Then lower the heat setting to maintain pressure
  • Gas Cooktop Bring cooker to pressure on high flame and when the cooker reaches pressure lower the flame to low or medium low to maintain it..

Test : Searing And Pressure Cooking

The test: To test how well the Instant Pots could sear and pressure cook, we made five batches of this recipe for chunky beef chili. We documented the sear on the beef from each model and timed how long each machine took to pressurize. We tasted each sample to evaluate the tenderness of the meat and overall flavor of each chili. One Instant Pot model, the Duo Pro, has a special inner pot that can be used on the stovetop, so we used this pot directly on the burner over medium-high heat to sear the beef. With the other four models, we used their sauté modes.

Heres what happened: The big reveal isno big reveal. Each chili tasted pretty much identical, which may be more of a testament to the quality of the testing of that recipe than the machines we used to make it. None of the five chili samples had bitter notes or off flavors. All of the meat was tender the meat cooked in the Ultra was almost too tender, losing its cube form and shredding a bit too much. There was, however, a clear winner for pressurizing timethe Duo Pro was remarkably fast, taking just over 5 minutes. The Duo Plus was the next quickest, taking about 6 minutes, and since it has a slightly larger inner pot, there was more surface area available for searing. The Duo 7-in-1, Ultra, and Max each took about 8 minutes.

What Can I Steam In My Instant Pot

If youre like me, you love your Instant Pot. Its a quick and easy way to cook dinner with very little effort. But what can you steam in your Instant Pot?

Well, just about anything that can be steamed or boiled on the stovetop can be steamed in your instant pot. Here are some ideas:

  • Vegetables: Whether you are cooking fresh or frozen vegetables, steaming is the best way to cook them. This method retains the flavor and the nutrients much better than if you boil them in water.
  • Chicken: Steaming chicken breast in the Instant Pot is quick and convenient. Perfect for making shredded chicken for sandwiches or recipes that require pre-cooked chicken.
  • Fish: Fish can be tricky to cook in an instant pot. If cooking it in water, it is easy to overcook, and so gently steaming it is a better approach.
  • Potatoes: Potatoes can be hard to cook in the instant pot because they tend to fall apart if overcooked. Steaming is the best approach to cooking them in the Instant Pot as it is a more gentle cooking method. For more details check out my recipe: Instant Pot Steamed Potatoes
  • Eggs: Steaming eggs in the Instant Pot is my new favorite way to cook them. Hard-boiled eggs take just 5 minutes.
  • Fruit: You can steam whole fruit like pears and apples directly on the trivet, or chopped fruit in a heatproof bowl on the trivet or in a steamer basket.

Redesigned Inner Cooking Pot

Unlike most pressure cookers on the market, the Pros stainless steel cooking pot has a flat bottom, handles, and can transfer to the stovetop or oven up to 450°F.

I really love the handles! When you place the pot in the housing, the handles lock the cooking pot in place so it doesnt move while youre stirring. Plus, they give you a good grip on the pot when you remove it.
