What Ingredients Do I Need
The ingredient list is pretty simple when it comes to hard boiling eggs:
Pro Tip: To avoid cracked eggs, always start with room temperature eggs. It reduces the shock to the egg and your chance of having a crack after cooking. So set them out on the counter for about 30 minutes before you start your cooking.

How To Make Hard Boiled Eggs In The Instant Pot:
The first step is to place a steamer basket in the Instant Pot. Then, place 12 eggs directly in the steamer basket. If you dont have a steamer basket, see below.
Now you dont have to cook all 12. If you want 1 egg, the time would still be the same.
Add at least 1 cup of water. Some have shared that if you completely cover the eggs, fewer eggs will crack.
Place the lid on the Instant Pot. Make sure the knob is turned to Sealing, not Venting. Push the Manual button and set for 5 minutes.
While the eggs are coming to pressure and cooking, prepare an ice bath. After the eggs have cooked for 5 minutes, let the pressure naturally release for 5 minutes, then you can do a quick release.
Remove the steamer basket and eggs and place in the ice bath. Allow the eggs to cool for 5 minutes in the ice bath. As you peel, crack the egg and gently peel. They will be the easiest eggs youve ever peeled! Every time!

Why Did My Eggs Crack During Cooking
Make sure you place the eggs on the steaming rack without letting them touch the water. If you put the eggs directly into the water or partially in the water, the eggs might jostle during cooking and crack open. Also, stacking too many eggs can also cause cracking. If you want to cook more eggs in one batch and minimize cracking, investing in an egg rack might be a good idea.
To tell you the truth, if you are as big a fan of boiled eggs as I am, I would invest in an Instant Pot, if only just to make perfect eggs so easily! They are that good and that convenient. And of course, there are so many other great, easy, and delicious dishes you can make using an Instant Pot.
What Are The Best Eggs To Use
I have honestly used all different types of eggs for this method, and they all turn out. Whether you get the cheapest eggs at the store, brown eggs, organic eggs, or even eggs from your backyard chickens, they should turn out. If you are using extra-large eggs, you may need to make a few more adjustments!

What If I Dont Have A Steamer Basket Where Can I Get A Steamer Basket
This is the steamer basket that I have and love. Bonus! It comes with 2 extra 6 quart Instant Pot Sealing Rings.
Having a steamer basket makes transferring the hard boiled eggs from the Instant Pot to the ice bath so easy! I also recommend having a second Instant Pot liner for your ice bath. Find it here.
If you dont have a steamer basket, you can still make Hard Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot. Simply nestle the eggs in the pot or on top of the trivet. Add water and you are good to go!
How To Peel Eggs
One of the major quandaries when troubleshooting this recipe was how to easily peel a hard-boiled egg once its cooked.
3 Tips for Easy-to-Peel Hard-Boiled Eggs:
- Ice Bath: An ice bathimmediately after you finish cooking the eggs is crucial and ice them for at least 5 minutes! The longer you ice them the easier they are to peel.
- Rolling it Out: Hitting the rounded bottom of the egg and then vigorously rolling the egg resulted in an egg that was easier to peel.
- Running under Cold Water: If your eggs are still being a bit tricky, run them under cold water while peeling. Make sure the water runs between the egg white and the membrane so it helps to separate the two.
Some say old eggs are easier to peel. If you happen to have some week or two-week-old eggs, go ahead and use those up.
If you dont, no problem! In my dozens of egg trials, I did not see a huge difference.

What Is An Ice Bath
This is a combination of cold water and ice in a large bowl to help quickly stop the cooking process. This is essential to ensure you are not overcooking the eggs.
I just recommend getting a large bowl, filling it with cold water, and a bunch of ice cubes. I usually do this while I am waiting for the pressure to release from the Instant Pot.
How Long Do You Boil Eggs For Hard
How many minutes for hard-boiled eggs depends on the consistency you want for the yolk! Boiling eggs for less time results in runnier yolks. Instant pot hard-boiled eggs that cook for a longer time, however, produce fully set yolks.

Why Use An Ice Bath
The ice bath will cool the eggs immediately so they wont keep cooking in the residual heat. Plus, the eggs will be shocked, which makes them very easy to peel.
What if you dont have ice? No problem at all! Simply run the eggs under cold tap water for 1 to 2 minutes, until they are cooled enough to peel. The eggs might be slightly easier to peel using the ice bath method, but the tap water method is a lazy one that I use all the time.
Pour The Water Over The Eggs
Simply pour the 4 cups of water with baking soda over the eggs. The water should go slightly above the bottom of the rack basket, so the eggs will barely be in a bit of water. They will not be submerged. The main point of this method is pressure steam cooking. You are not boiling them in the classic sense.

How Can I Tell If Eggs Are Fresh
As you can probably guess, fresh eggs taste quite a bit better than older eggs closer to their expiration date. And the last thing you want is to eat an egg that is rotten!
If you aren’t sure how to know if your eggs are fresh, there’s a simple test that works every single time and takes out all the guess work.
Simply take your eggs and gently place them in a bowl filled with 4″ of cold water. If the eggs sink to the bottom, they’re fresh! If they float to the top, they need to be tossed.

How To Use Your Instant Pot To Make Hard
The Instant Pot’s amazing versatility means you can use the multi-function appliance to steam, pressure cook, or slow cook your favorite foods and recipes. For hard-boiled eggs, the “pressure cook” function is the setting you’ll be using. Some Instant Pots even have a built-in “egg” pressure cook setting.
An Instant Pot is an easy way to make hard-boiled eggs by following Shumski’s simple “five-five-release” cooking formula. “Essentially, you cook them for five minutes, let them sit for five minutes, and then release the pressure,” he says.
Insert The Basket In The Pot
You will need to have a basket. The basket will elevate the eggs from the surface of the pot.
If you place the eggs directly in the pot, it will work, but it will burn the shell. It doesnt affect the taste too much, but you will get brown spots on the egg shells and on the eggs themselves. Same goes for any part of the egg touching the sides.
If you use the basket and an egg is leaning up against the side, you will get some slight browning on the shell, but not as badly as if you just placed the egg straight into the pot. Straight into the pot will produce the brown burned spots on the shell that will also transfer to the hard boiled egg. If it is leaning against the side, you will get slight browning on the side, but it hasnt transferred to the egg.
Does that make sense? I hope it does. That is the one main issue with the oven eggs brown spots from the shell getting burned. Like I said, it doesnt really affect taste, but its not a beautiful egg anymore.
The point is, if you have the basket rack, this is going to produce the best results!
