How To Seal Instant Pot Valve

A Major Reason Why Food Is Undercooked

An In-depth Look at Instant Pot Float Valve

Let me tell you this. Pushing down the Instant Pot lid is actually one of the top reasons why your food comes out undercooked in the Instant Pot Electric Pressure Cooker.

Without going all nerdy right off the bat, let me explain this to you in human language.

If the lid is pushed down to force seal the Instant Pot, air will be trapped inside the pot. Since air has a lower heat capacity than steam, it will reduce the cooking temperature.

You Need To Clean The Bottom Of The Pot

If you were sauteing meat or veggies in your inner pot, you may have food stuck to the bottom. If there is food stuck to the bottom, it may make your pressure cooker think that the food is already burnt and as a result, it will not come to pressure. Additionally, the ingredients stuck to the bottom restrict the circulation of liquid.

To fix this issue, you will want to open your Instant Pot, stir your food, and make sure nothing is stuck to the bottom. If you do notice food is stuck to the bottom, add ½ cup more liquid and use a spatula to break the food off the bottom. Then, begin to again.

But Dont Add Too Much Liquid Or Use The Wrong Kind

Pay attention to the Max Fill Line its there for a reason. Certain foods expand when cooking , and the pressure in the pot needs ample space to function properly.

As for the right type of liquid to add to your Instant Pot, youll need a liquid that can turn into steam to cook your food. So avoid using heavy cream sauces, cornstarch, arrowroot, potato starch, or tomato paste.

Instead, wait for your food to be done cooking, then set it aside and use the saute function to thicken your sauce.

Make Sure Your Vent In Set To Sealing

This is key. On your lid there is a vent that looks like a lever of sorts. When starting your cook, you want this lever pointing toward “sealing” and not “venting.” Sealing means the Instant Pot is going to hold all the pressure created inside the pot, while venting is what you’ll likely do to release the pressure when the food is finished cooking.

Do You Need To Double The Cook Time For A Double Recipe

Instant Pot Ultra 60 10

If you would like to double an Instant Pot recipe, you may double the ingredients . You do not need to double the cook time.

However, you may need to adjust the cook time based on the size/width of meat and vegetables. For example, a small 8 ounce chicken breast will cook faster than a large 12 ounce chicken breast and a small sweet potato will cook faster than a large sweet potato. Read all recipes and directions carefully to determine how long to cook your food.

Check The Sealing Ring

One of the things you have to check in an instant pot before cooking is the sealing ring. Open up your instant pot and push the sealing ring through the ring rack until it is seated properly. To confirm if it is in position, try turning the ring rack.

If it rotates or moves around the ring rack, then you know it is sealed. In the rare case that your sealing ring is misplaced or missing, your pot might start leaking steam by the sides, and it becomes necessary to replace the sealing ring.

Another possibility is that your sealing ring has overextended because of the heat, and it doesnt return to its natural state. Consider putting the sealing ring in a freezer or run cold water on it so it can contract and get back in shape. Check for food debris in the sealing ring that might not let it stay in position so you can remove it with soap and water.

How To Cook Pot

One of my favorite perks of the Instant Pot is that you can cook two dishes at the same time! Its called pot-in-pot cooking, where one dish cooks on the bottom of the pot, and then a separate bowl of food can cook on top of that. You can see an example of this with my Chipotle Burrito Bowls. In this case, the spiced black beans cook on the bottom while a bowl of brown rice cooks on top, both from scratch in a 30-minute cooking cycle.

Ive dedicated an entire blog post to pot-in-pot cooking, so you can get a better idea of which ingredients can be cooked together at the same time. There are also several recipes in my cookbook that teach you how to cook rice, cauliflower rice, and cauliflower mashed potatoes at the same time as your main entree.

How To Naturally Release The Pressure

13 Reasons Why Your Instant Pot Won’t Work or Pressurize – Problems: Float Valve, Sealing Ring

If a recipe calls for a natural release, youll do nothing when the cooking cycle is complete. For most recipes, it will take 10-15 minutes for the pressure to naturally leave the pot.

I like it when recipes tell you exactly how long to wait for the natural release. In all of my recipes in The Fresh & Healthy Instant Pot Cookbook, I tell you exactly how long to wait and when that time has passed you can move the steam release valve from Sealing to Venting to release any remaining pressure. That way youre not waiting around for an extra 30 minutes or more to eat your dinner!

Clean Instant Pot Base

Much like a slow cooker, the base of your pressure cooker contains the heating element and electronic components, so this part should never be submerged in water or placed in the dishwasher. To clean the Instant Pot base, wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth to remove crumbs or food splatters. If you need to clean the inside of the cooking base, use a clean, damp cloth to wipe it down and dry the interior immediately. Clean the recessed area around the lip of the base with a small scrubbing brush or toothbrush to remove any stuck-on food.

Instant Pot Pasta To Water Ratio

When making pasta in the pressure cooker, you need to at least have enough water to just barely cover the pasta. Regardless of how many servings you are making, you need to make sure the pasta is covered.

Make sure you have enough water to meet the minimum liquid requirement of your particular model of Instant PotI usually aim to have at least 1 cup of liquid.

There are a lot of specific ratio suggestions floating around the internet, but honestly, I just make sure the pasta is just barely covered with water, and that always works splendidly for me.

Tips For Cooking Pasta

Common Instant Pot Problems and How to Solve Them

To cook pasta perfectly the first time, start by choosing a large pot and adding enough water so the pasta can be fully submerged. Once the water starts boiling, make sure you add salt. This will help bring out the flavor of the pasta. As a general rule, if youre cooking one pound of pasta, youll want about one tablespoon of salt for every four cups of water.

Wait until the water is fully boiling before you add your pasta. Once you do, be sure to stir it right away. Each type of pasta requires a different cooking time, so be sure to follow the instructions on the package. Youll want to start checking sooner than the time indicated, though, so you dont overcook it.

Use An Intermittent Pressure Release

High-starch foods like potatoes and pasta frequently foam while pressure cooking. Usually, a long, slow natural pressure release is better to allow the foam to subside. However, pasta will easily overcook so you need a quick pressure release to keep it from going mushy.

Thats why youll use an intermittent release. Heres how to do it:

  • When the cook time ends, flip the pressure valve from Sealed to Venting. Allow the pressure to release until you see foam or large water droplets coming from the valve.
  • As soon as this happens, flip the switch back to Sealed and wait for 20 to 30 seconds. This will reduce the foam.
  • Flip back to Venting and repeat as necessary until all the pressure is released.

You should only need to do this once or twice.

Quick Releasenatural Release & Combination

When you pressure cook, the food cooks from the time you switch the instant pot ON, till it attains pressure, the time you set and the time it takes the pressure to decrease and come to normal.

So when a recipe calls for 5 minutes of HIGH Pressure, it is typically 10 minutes it takes to get the the required pressure,5 minutes of cooking under that pressure and 10-15 minutes of time it takes to release that pressure.

There are different ways of releasing pressure.

Add More Liquid To The Instant Pot

Before trying to close the instant pot to cook, you should have enough liquid in the pot. If too much liquid had already left the pot, it wouldnt pressurize, so it might be necessary to add more liquid.

Depending on the dish youre cooking, add more broth or water. If you mistakenly add too much water in, use the Sauté function so the liquid will reduce and get thicker.
