Instant Pot| How to Make Pasta in the Instant Pot: Rotini with Tomato Meat Sauce

The amount of time you cook on high pressure should be half the time your box of pasta calls for. So if the box says to cook the pasta for 8 minutes, cook it for 4; if the box says to cook for 12 minutes, cook it for 6. Ive followed this rule of thumb for regular pasta and even gluten-free pastas like Banza or Jovial and it turns out perfectly every time!

The Best Types Of Pasta For The Pressure Cooker

Short pasta does best in the pressure cooker. Long pasta like spaghetti has a tendency of sticking together unless you are very strategic on how its placed and fanned out and even still may have an issue with it sticking. Pasta I have successfully cooked include Chinese egg noodles for Garlic Sesame Beef, Wide egg noodles for Stroganoff, tri-colored rotini for Pasta Salad, and chickpea pasta.

How Long Does It Take To Cook Spaghetti Noodles In An Instant Pot

To cook Spaghetti Noodles in an Instant Pot, refer to the packet instructions of the spaghetti, divide that by 2 and subtract 1.

Pasta cooks a lot quicker in the Instant Pot to the stove, so it needs less cook time.

For example my dried Spaghetti packet indicated the cook time is 10 mins. Divided by 2 is 5, then I subtract 1 and get 4 mins.

It takes 4 mins to cook the spaghetti noodles at high pressure mode, using the pressure cooker function, followed by a quick release of pressure.

Calculating Cooking Time For Pasta

Check out the recommended cooking time on the packet of the pasta. Most pasta cooks in 8 to 12 minutes.; Often, you will have a range, say 9-11 minutes in boiling water. Al dente means its cooked but still has a little firmness when you bite through it, so it maintains its structure without being too soft or mushy. Al dente is the Italian way!

To cook the pasta in the Instant Pot, you would divide its regular cooking time by 2 and deduct 1 extra minute. So it would be -1 minute=3.5 minutes at HIGH pressure followed by a quick release of the pressure. On average, 4-4.5 minutes should work for most types of pasta.;

How To Stop Starch From Shooting Out

Instant Pot Pasta How To Cook Pasta In The Instant Pot ...

As we mentioned above, our primary goal with this method fo cooking pasta in the Instant Pot is to prevent starch from escaping during the release, and spraying starchy liquid all over your kitchen. In fact, it was one of the first times I cooked gluten-free pasta in the Instant Pot when I did not know how to react when the starch started spewing everywhere in my kitchen. Everything in the vicinity of my IP was covered in a starchy slime, and I feared that my Instant Pot was ruined since so much had come out from the release valve. Luckily, a few cycles through the dishwasher and taking apart the valve to clean it saved it.

But how to prevent the starch from escaping in the future? The first step was coming up with this method for cooking it which reduces the amount of starch that escapes to begin with. It truly makes a difference. But the next step was stopping the starch from coming out, without overcooking the pasta, if it does occur.

If a lot of starch starts to spew out of the pressure release valve, using a towel, carefully shut the valve, and let it stay closed for 20 seconds. After 20 seconds have passed, you can release the valve again. You can repeat this process as necessary until all the pressure has released. This helps control the temperature and rapid boiling with the Instant Pot, which reduces the starch from escaping.

Tips For Perfect Instant Pot Pasta

Id like to say that Instant Pot spaghetti is foolproof, but after spending a lot of time reading through comments in an Instant Pot Facebook group, I quickly learned that a few common problems plague this kind of recipe. But all of them can be easily avoided with good technique.

  • Always scrape the bottom of the pot after browning the meat. The goal here is to avoid getting a BURN warning from your pot, so youll want to brown the meat, add a little water to the pot, and scrape, scrape, scrape before you add the marinara.
  • Layer the water under and over the pasta. To cook the pasta evenly, youll want to make sure there is water both under the pasta and over it. I like to rinse my sauce jar with water and then pour it over the pasta to avoid waste, but feel free to skip this if youre using homemade sauce.
  • Resist the urge to stir after the pasta is added. As soon as youve got the pasta in the pot and the water over it, put the lid on. You can give the pasta a gentle prod, but do not stir, which will give you gummy, stuck-together pasta.

What Pasta Can You Cook In The Instant Pot

  • Use only dry pasta.
  • Do not use pasta that takes less than 8 minutes to cook.
  • Do not use tiny pasta, such as orzo or pastina, as it may clog the steam release vent.
  • Do not use any pasta that has floating as the doneness test, such as gnocchi or tortellini, as you cannot see the pasta to tell whether it is floating.

Our Method Of Cooking Pasta

Our method for cooking any type of pasta in the Instant Pot is a bit different, and well explain how we came to it below. But first, here is our basic method:

  • Add dried pasta and water to nearly cover the pasta. A few pieces of pasta sticking above the water line is ok. You dont want to cook it in too much water because that lengthens the time it takes to heat and that can become a problem during the pressure release .
  • Set the Instant Pot to the cooking time of 0 minutes, and yes this is an actual cooking time and not a typo!
  • Once it comes up to pressure and hits 0 minutes, let the pressure naturally release for 3 minutes. This reads as L 00:03 on the Instant Pot.
  • Then release the remaining pressure manually.
  • So whats the science behind this? Its simple: the pasta is already cooking during the time it takes to come up to the pressure, and the pasta continues to cook when the pressure cooker clicks off. The reason we do it this way is to minimize the Instant Pot from boiling over with starch. This looks like starch spewing out of the pressure release knob.

    How To Reduce Pasta Foam

I’ve learned some great tips and tricks from all of you in the comments below, here is a summary of the knowledge I’ve gathered over time:

    • Add Fat
    • Oil or butter will reduce foaming.; I add about 1 tablespoon per 8 ounces of pasta
  • Rinse pasta
  • Rinse the pasta 2 3 times before you cook it I wouldn’t say this is the perfect solution, but it does seem to help
  • Place a trivet over the pasta
  • As bubbles start to rise, the trivet will pop them and keep foam from reaching the valve.; This doesn’t work perfectly every time either, but again, it seems to help especially if you use a slow pressure release
  • Intermittent Pressure Release
  • Turn knob to quickly release the pressure.; If starchy water starts to spray through the valve, switch the knob to a sealed position, wait 30 seconds, then switch the valve back to release, repeating this process as many times as needed usually 2 -3 times
  • Slow Pressure Release
  • Turn the knob only slightly so the pressure is released slowly.; This will take a bit longer but will cut down on foaming considerably and prevent overcooked pasta
  • My personal go-to method
  • Add fat, place a trivet over the pasta, use a quick release of the pressure and wait and see if there is going to be enough starchy water spraying out for me to want to close the knob again.; Then I use the intermittent or slow-release method to release the remaining pressure.

    Burn Error Tips & Tricks

In many cases, if you get the burn error and your Instant Pot has already come to pressure you can do nothing and your meal will still turn out well. If the pot is pressurized, set a timer for 10 minutes, or wait until the floating valve in the lid drops, signaling that the pressure has released.

This gives your food the chance to cook, and allows whatever burnt on the bottom of your pot to rehydrate. As a result, food is usually NOT stuck to the bottom of your pan when you use this method. If your pot has not pressurized by the time you get the burn error, youll probably have to open the lid, scrape the bottom of the pan with a spoon, add a little extra water and try again.

    Make sure you have enough water to meet the minimum liquid requirement of your particular model of Instant PotI usually aim to have at least 1 cup of liquid.;

Many people find their pasta can get pretty foamy when cooked in the Instant Pot. Just like when you cook on the stove, many add a splash of butter or oil to help from the pot boiling over and reduce the foam. Just do the same with your past in the Instant Pot. Add 1/2 teaspoon of butter or oil of your choice in when you go to cook. While it doesnt entirely fix it, you will find you have a lot less foam.

Can I Cook Pasta In An Instant Pot

Yes! You can, and whats more I highly recommend it as a time saving and low-effort way to make pasta that is super flavorful and perfectly cooked. Heres why:

More flavor – Pasta cooked in the Instant Pot turns out more flavorful than pasta that is cooked with the sauce separately. The seasonings are mixed in with the water and liquid used to cook the pasts in the Instant Pot. The pasta cooks under pressure and absorbs all the flavors from the liquid. I like to add a good quality broth or bouillon to the liquid before pressure cooking, and this gives my super flavorful pasta every single time!

Perfect texture – The pasta comes out just the way my kids and I like it. A tad more done than al dente. The softer than usual texture is a hige hit with kids especially. If you like your pasta al dente and with some more bite, then simply reduce the pressure cooking time by a minute.

Naturally thick sauce No need to reserve that starchy pasta water to thicken the sauce anymore! Many stovetop pasta recipes call for reserving the pasta water to thicken the sauce. When you cook pasta in the Instant Pot, the starch from the pasta is not drained away. It stays in the cooker, and the sauce is naturally thickened. This means you can add lesser cream or cheese or other thickeners .

    Whole Wheat / Alternative Pasta

    There is no need to make any adjustment to the formula if using whole wheat or alternative pasta. Because this method of cooking pasta is based on the recommended cook time on the package, any type of pasta can be cooked this way.;

We tested this method with several varieties of whole wheat pasta and with several varieties of alternative pasta .

    How To Make Gluten

If you need to make gluten-free spaghetti, I recommend cooking the pasta in the Instant Pot without the sauce. Ive tested this method using gluten-free noodles, and the resulting one-pot pasta is way too thick and gluey in texture for my taste.

However, if you want to use the Instant Pot to cook your spaghetti noodles, its still helpful to make the process totally hands-off. Simply cook the pasta and water together using the timing I mentioned above, then drain and rinse the noodles under cold running water to remove the starch.

You can add the rinsed-off noodles back to the Instant Pot bowl and stir in the sauce, and if you need to heat it up further, use the Sauté function on your machine. If youd like to use ground turkey or beef, sauté it in the pot before adding in the sauce and cooked pasta.
