As noted above, cooking rice in the Instant Pot is only a few minutes faster than cooking it on the stovetop. So why bother learning how to cook rice in an Instant Pot? We like that it cooks it perfectly every time, and we dont have to worry about checking a pot thats simmering on the stove. In that way, its just like a rice cooker.
Our magic formula for our Instant Pot rice is as follows, and its different for white and brown rice. This recipe is currently for long grain rice only well update it once weve tested short grain rice! Use the pressure cooker to do the following:
- Instant Pot White Rice: Pressure cook on high for 8 minutes and then use the natural release process for 10 minutes.
- Instant Pot Brown Rice: Pressure cook on high for 20 minutes and then use the natural release process for 10 minutes.

How To Reheat Rice
When I reheat rice I always use it in fried rice. That way I know I warmed my rice thoroughly.
It is very important to heat all of your rice because of bacteria that can survive in cooked rice.
So heat your wok or skillet to hot and add your rice. You can reheat from frozen. Just stir it continuously until you see all of the rice is piping hot. Then serve.
You can also reheat the rice using the microwave but I never do this. If you do, add 2 tablespoons of water to an airtight container with the rice.
Put the container in the microwave and heat for 3 to 4 minutes or until it is really hot through.
Check if the internal temperature is at least 165 or hotter and serve immediately.

A few notes about Instant Pot rice: There is a bit of water left over after cooking , but when I reduced the water during testing, the Instant Pot showed the burn notice. Ive also found that the rice is a bit softer when cooked in the Instant Pot rather than when cooked in a pan.
How To Store Rice
If you have extra rice, you can refrigerate or freeze the leftovers for later, but you need to take certain precautions for food safety. Uncooked rice can be contaminated with spores of a bacteria that can survive the cooking process. If cooked rice is left to sit at room temperature, the bacteria may multiply.
Its best to eat cooked rice right away after cooking. If you have leftover rice, cool it quickly by laying it out in a thin layer. Refrigerate or freeze rice as soon as possible after cooking . Use refrigerated cooked rice within 2 days or frozen rice within a month. Reheat rice until steaming hot before serving.

Use A Natural Pressure Release
No matter what kind of rice youre cooking, its a good idea to let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes before opening the pot. This allows the moisture to distribute evenly throughout the grains, and helps it unstick from the bottom of the pot, too.
You *can* open the pot with a quick pressure release if you like, but it really does benefit from a little resting time!
Should I Use The Rice Button On My Instant Pot
The Instant Pots rice button is best used for white rice, as it is specifically calibrated to weigh white rice and water and cook the rice accordingly. This is ideal for weeknights when you truly want to set and forget your rice, but not great for cooking different varieties of rice on the fly.
Luckily, you can use your Instant Pots manual pressure function to cook white, brown, or wild rice on high pressure in just a few minutes. Heres how to do it.

Instant Pot Duo Vs Duo Nova: Which One Should You Choose
Since the release of Instant Pot Duo, you may be wondering what is the difference between the two models? In this blog post, we will compare and contrast both Instant Pot models.
Instant pot duo is a 7-in-1 multi-purpose pressure cooker that can do just about anything. The only thing it doesnt have is a yogurt function which has been added to its newer counterpart, the Duo Nova model. With 6 cooking functions and 10 built in safety features, this versatile appliance has everything from slow cookers to rice makers. Not only does it come with 14 preprogrammed settings but also includes an automatic steam release setting for quick temperature reduction so your food isnt overcooked.
Best Instant Pot Rice
Weve been first introduced to the Instant Pot about 3 years ago, and we were hooked right away. We love to cook with the pressure cooker, as usually the cooking time is reduced, and the dish is ready in half time compared to the traditional methods. Therefore, we loved it, and have never stopped using it since.
I never cook my rice directly in the inner pot, as it usually sticks to the bottom of it and many times you get the Burn message. I ALWAYS use this Steamer Insert Pan, this way the rice is always PERFECTLY cooked, it doesnt stick to the pan and has the perfect texture.
What is an instant pot?
The Instant Pot is a multi-cooker that does the job of a slow cooker, electric pressure cooker, steamer, and yogurt maker. Also, it has the capacity of a sauté/browning pan, and a function to keep your food warm after cooking.
Its a single appliance that does the job of multiple different kitchen appliances or tools. Its a time-saver, and in many cases, it cooks the food in a fraction of the time. You can get one from here.

How To Make Perfect Instant Pot White Rice
What is great about the Instant Pot is that it sint just a pressure cooker. Every Instant Pot model also includes a rice cooking function. It also makes it easy to make differing amounts of rice. In the InstaPot, you can often make a smaller amount than you could in most dedicated rice cookers. Simply use a water to rice ration of 1 cup rice to 1 cup of water.
The secret to fluffy rice that does not stick is to rinse it well before cooking. Immerse the rice in water, stir until the water turns milky, and drain. Repeat, and then run under water a bit longer to completely rinse. This removes the excess starch that can cause rice to get sticky.
Another tip is to add about 1 teaspoon of oil to the pot for each cup of rice. This also prevents sticking and reduces foam from the cooking rice. A bit of salt adds flavor. Use the Rice setting for white rice. For brown rice, use the high pressure cooking setting and cook for 22 minutes.
Results & Rice Texture
So what makes Instant Pot rice good? Well, it will definitely give you a different type of texture. The results of Instant Pot rice have more distinct rice grains than a rice cookerthis was made even more significant because I used short-grain rice, which is known for its stickier consistency.
Its different and not necessarily better or worse, depending on what you like or expect. You can perhaps keep tinkering with the time and water to rice ratios to dial it in, but this is one that I prefer. But I found that even adding ¼ cup more water takes the grains from distinct to something mushier.

Cooking The Wild Rice In The Pressure Cooker
Pour the dry rice and seasonings into the insert pot of the Instant Pot.
Add water to the pot and stir to combine. If there are any large clumps of seasoning, try to break them up a bit with a spoon or spatula.
Select a cook time of 5 minutes at high pressure using the Manual/Pressure Cook setting.
Once the cook time is complete, allow at least a 10 minute natural release, followed by a quick release of any remaining pressure. I generally just use a full natural release.
After the pressure has released and the valve has dropped, carefully remove the lid. Fluff the rice with a fork and serve as desired!

The Rice Sticks To The Bottom Of The Inner Pot
Having shiny, slightly sweet, plump, and delicious Japanese rice is the true comfort and luxury for me, so I am willing to spend a little more to purchase short grain Japanese rice from Japan . Instant Pot Saute Setting
The Sauté is another non-pressure cooking program that can be used in place of a frying pan or flat-top grill. For recipes that call for browned onions or garlic, its important to sauté them before adding liquid to the pot as you will release a lot of flavor this way. Another reason to sauté first is for browning meat. Lastly, sautéeing before cooking is a great way to increase heat and reduce the amount of time your pot will take to come to pressure.
How Much Rice Can I Cook
We recommend a minimum of 1 cup of dry rice directly in the inner pot. If youre cooking less, use the pot-in-pot method.
You can use the 1:1 recipe for any amount, but remember to never fill your inner pot past the halfway mark when cooking food that expands, such as rice.
If you are cooking a lot of rice, you may find you need to add a minute or two to the cooking time.
