Before launching my experiment, I had tried a few methods I found online.

My first observation was that there are MANY methods to cook Instant Pot hard boiled eggs online, and they are all different.

  • Some maintain you cannot cook the eggs on high pressure or they will crack.
  • There were multiple methods named with three numbers sounding like swim team drills my kids do: 5-5-5, 6-4-2, etc.
  • Some swear by quick release, others by slow release.

It was really hard to know where to begin!

The two methods I tried didnt work to meet my criteria.

Both left the egg yolks uncooked fully as well as the peeling wasnt predictable leaving the eggs looking gnawed on .

How Long To Boil The Eggs In The Instant Pot

To make hard boiled eggs, you need to boil the eggs for about 8 to 9 minutes depending on your preference of texture for the hard boiled eggs.

I usually do 8 minutes for hard boiled eggs and then do a natural pressure release of 5 minutes, after which I manually release the pressure.

If you want soft boiled eggs, you may go for the 5-5-5 method where you boil the eggs for 5 minutes and then do a manual pressure release after 5 minutes of natural pressure release and then give a cold ice water bath for the boiled eggs for 5 minutes.

You can change the consistency and texture of your boiled eggs by adjusting the time accordingly.

In this recipe for boiled eggs in the instant pot, we are going to cook the eggs for 8 minutes followed by a careful and gradual manual pressure release after waiting for a natural pressure release for 5 minutes.

Then we immediately transfer the boiled eggs for cold ice water bath and wait until the eggs are completely cooled, before peeling the eggs.

So here is how you can make easy and delicious boiled eggs in the instant pot without using trivet or rack.

Why Do Some Eggs Crack During Pressure Cooking

Note that sometimes, you will get one or two eggs that will crack during cooking. I am not sure what the reason is but Ive heard from others that it can be depended on the age of the egg. Older eggs might crack and fresh ones wont. They will still be perfectly cooked and the shell will peel off easily.

How To Cooks Eggs In The Instant Pot

I based my eggs on the popular 5-5-5 method for hard-cooked eggs in the Instant Pot. The idea is to put your eggs into a steamer basket and seal them inside your pressure cooker along with a cup or so of water. It takes about five minutes for the cooker to come up to high pressure, five minutes to cook the eggs, and then five minutes of natural pressure release before removing the eggs from the cookerhence the 5-5-5 method.

I found that this basic formula worked just fine, though it typically takes my pressure cooker closer to 10 minutes before fully pressurizing.

I also decided that I like the texture of 4-minute eggs better than 5-minute eggs. At four minutes, the whites are firm but soft and the yolk is cooked through but still creamy at five minutes, I felt like the whites started to become rubbery and the yolk was a little chalky. Give it a try both ways and see which you prefer.

The idea of placing the eggs in ice cold water helps the eggs to peel easily, but it also prevents the discolored yolk. The strange color that sometimes forms around hard boiled yolks is a reaction of the sulfur in the egg white and the iron in the yolk . By placing the warm eggs in ice water, it stops the cooking process and helps to stop the discoloration.

School mornings are always somewhat crazy in our home. It doesnt matter how much we preparewhether its making breakfast in advance or setting out clothes the night before schoolmornings will also be sprinkled with a dash of crazy unpredictability.

Last week, this craziness showed up in the form of very bad traffic on the way to school. We eventually made it to school, about 30 minutes late. This week, this touch of craziness included the dog getting sick in the house just as we were about to leave for school. Ah yes, life, my friend. Its no where near perfect, because perfect doesnt exist.

Its because of this imperfect craziness that Im such a proponent for being intentionally prepared before the morning arrives. For us, this looks like having breakfast and lunch components prepped and ready to enjoy. I know, Im always talking about prep. And its for good reason.

Prep simplifies our life. Prep reduces my stress, as head cook. And stress makes those unexpected bumps, which are sure to come during the week, easier to get over. Because no one needs the added burden of having to figure out how to create a from-scratch meal at 7am each morning, on top of feeling rushed and stressed because of a mess in the kitchen. Oh, and then add a sick dog in the mix. No, thank you!

    So, back to eggs

Whichever time you choose, I know youll love the instant nature of cooking eggs in the Instant Pot.

    What Is An Ice Bath

This is a combination of cold water and ice in a large bowl to help quickly stop the cooking process. This is essential to ensure you are not overcooking the eggs.

I just recommend getting a large bowl, filling it with cold water, and a bunch of ice cubes. I usually do this while I am waiting for the pressure to release from the Instant Pot.
