How To Make Oatmeal In The Instant Pot

Oats are quick breakfast any way you cook them, but I prefer the hands-off method of using a pressure cooker. To make this Instant Pot oatmeal recipe you will need:

  • 2 cups of Old-Fashioned oats
  • 5 cups of water
  • ½ tsp salt

The salt is optional but I highly recommend it. The point of the salt is not to make the dish salty, but to enhance the flavors.

Say Yes To Greasing The Pot

Since I knew foam could be a problem when cooking oats in my pressure cooker, I decided to grease the cooking pot before adding the oats and water. I figured if oil prevented foam-style cakes, like angel food cakes, from climbing the sides of the pan, maybe it would keep the foam down in the pot. This extra step worked. Not only did it seem to keep the foam down, but it also made cleanup a snap. Its a step I wouldnt consider skipping.

Whats The Difference Between Rolled And Old Fashioned Oats

Instant Pot Oatmeal

There is no difference. They are the same thing, just different names.

Steel cut oats are different though, as well as quick cooking oats. You can use steel cut oats in this recipe, see the substitution section below but I wouldnt recommend quick cooking oats which cook too fast and wont withstand well to the high pressure.

Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats Cooking Time How Long It Really Takes

  • The cooking time to which you set your Instant Pot for steel cut oats is 4 minutes on high pressure.
  • The actual total cooking time for Instant Pot steel cut oatmeal from start to finish is 25 minutes. This breaks out to 10 minutes for the pressure to build, 4 minutes cooking, and 10 minutes of natural release.

Stovetop steel cut oatmeal and Instant Pot steel cut oatmeal cook in about the same amount of total time. The benefit of the Instant Pot is that it is COMPLETELY hands-free.

You can start your oats when you wake up, walk away to get ready for work, then return to a hot, healthy breakfast thats waiting for you.

How To Reheat Leftover Instant Pot Oatmeal

Like I mentioned earlier, I love making a big batch of this and reheating it for a quick breakfast all week. My kids love it too!

We prefer to reheat ours in the microwave. Pulling back out the Instant Pot seems a bit silly for us, just for reheating purposes. If you are going to to that, for us at least, wed just assume make a fresh batch! Most of yall probably agree, but I know there are a few anti-microwave people out there. You do you, friends. Im just sharing how we do ours.

So here is what we do to reheat ours in the microwave. It will be more of like a solid chunk, very thick. I spoon out however much we want in a serving, and I use the spoon to break it up into smaller chunks. This helps it to heat more evenly.

The I pour a splash of almond milk over the top. I never measure, but I would recommend about 1/4 cup. I dont stir yet. I heat it for about a minute, and then I remove it and stir. I use the back of my spoon to break up any chunks be pressing them against the bowl.

After that, I return it to the microwave and heat another 45 seconds or so, until it gets hot enough for me. This may vary by microwave. Then stir again, and add any toppings.

How To Cook Instant Pot Oatmeal

Making old-fashioned oats in the Instant Pot is incredibly simple.

RIDICULOUSLY SIMPLE.

Step One: Place the trivet in the inner pot of your pressure cooker and pour in 1 cup cold water for 6-quart instant pots and 1.5 cups of water for an 8-quart Instant Pot.

Step Two: In a heat-safe bowl, mix your oats and liquid together with a bit of flaxseed. The flaxseed is optional but adds omega fatty acids and fiber.

Step Three: Put the lid on your instant pot, turn your valve to “sealed”, and set your pressure cooker to cook on high pressure for 3 minutes. I have found it takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes to come to pressure.

Step Four: Allow your oatmeal to sit in the Instant Pot for at least 5 minutes before doing a quick release of remaining pressure–see my tips on doing a quick release in my Instant Pot 101.

I would not release the pressure right away, because this may cause your oatmeal to spill out of your pot in pot.

Step Five: Serve warm with any desired toppings.

Steel Cut Oats Vs Rolled Oats Which Is Better

Both rolled oats and steel cut oats are high in protein, fiber, and nutrients and are a healthy choice. Because they are less processed, however, steel cut oats are better than rolled oats in several ways.

  • While both types of oats contain fiber with cholesterol-lowering properties , steel cut oats have a higher level of fiber than rolled oats. Each serving of steel cut oats has about 5 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein.
  • Steel cut oats rank lower on the glycemic index than rolled oats, meaning the body will digest and turn them into sugar more slowly.
  • Steel cut oats are minimally processed and naturally gluten free, making them ideal for people with gluten sensitivities.

Im super hurried and need a fast bowl of oatmeal, Ill make rolled oats, which are the second best option behind steel cut oats. For a meal, I avoid quick oats, which are more processed and have an inferior texture to rolled oats or steel cut oats. Always avoid instant oats which have a gummy, unpleasant texture once cooked and offer fewer health benefits.

The only downside of steel cut oats compared to rolled oats is that they take longer to cook. Thats where the Instant Pot comes in!

Tips For Making The Best Oatmeal

Whether youre making oatmeal using steel cut oats or old fashioned oats, the additional ingredients and method are the same, its just the ratios that differ. While this oatmeal recipe requires just 3 minutes cooking time and doesnt need any babysitting as it cooks in the Instant Pot, be sure to factor in the time it takes for the pot to pressurize and then natural release for a total cooking time of about 35 minutes.

If desired, you can add more spices to the base oatmeal recipe. I prefer keeping my oats plain so I can doctor them up differently every day to suit my mood, but you do you.

Also, I find that one essential ingredient to any oatmeal is salt, so dont skip it. It brings out the flavor and enhances each nutty bite.

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Oatmeal

How to Make Steel Cut Oatmeal in the Instant Pot

This one is my favorite, especially in the fall. Its kind of like a pumpkin chocolate chip cookie dessert oatmeal.

Mix together a bowl of Basic Instant Pot Oatmeal, milk/cream, butter, pumpkin puree, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Sprinkle some chocolate chips on top and wait 1-2 minutes. The chocolate will melt and you can swirl it around so each bite gets a bit of sweetness!

Oats Are 100% Whole Grain

Whole grain means that the nutrient-rich bran and germ parts of the grain haven’t been removed like in all-purpose white flour, white rice, etc. This means more vitamins, minerals, and overall fiber. Oats are also one of the most versatile gluten-free whole grain substitutes in pancakes, muffins, cookies, etc. Just be sure to look for labels that say Gluten Free since some oats are made on the same machines that package gluten containing grains.

Can You Freeze Oatmeal

Oatmeal is such an easy thing to freeze. Let it cool completely, then spray a muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray or line with muffin liners and transfer oatmeal into it.

Freeze for 2 hours before transferring single-serve oatmeal into a freezer-safe gallon-size bag. Freeze for up t 3months.

How To Cook Oatmeal In The Instant Pot

There are two ways to cook oatmeal in the Instant Pot. For this tutorial, Im using old-fashioned rolled oats. If you would prefer to use steel cut oats, check out my post on Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats instead.

  • Add everything to the bottom of your pot. This is the easiest and fastest method, but if your machine tends to give you a burn error when cooking, or youre worried about the oats getting stuck to the bottom of your pot, youll want to use the second method instead. This method is great for cooks who are in a hurry, or if you need to make a large portion of oats all at once.
  • Cook the oatmeal in a separate bowl. This is called pot-in-pot cooking, and its the most fool-proof for cooking old-fashioned rolled oats or quick cooking oats. Its also the method you should use if you want to cook a smaller portion of oats.
  • Today Ill show you both methods and walk you through the process step-by-step! If you prefer to watch a video demonstration, Ive got you covered with all of my tips and tricks for perfect Instant Pot Oatmeal below.

How To Store And Reheat Oatmeal

Instant Pot Steel Cut Oatmeal (+ Flavor Ideas!)

Homemade oatmeal is a great make ahead, healthy breakfast that is perfect for cold mornings when you just dont want to get out of bed.

Before storing, let it cool completely. To make breakfasts easy, portion out into individual containers. If you dont have smaller containers, one large one works too.

Store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.

To reheat, add ¼ cup of milk or almond milk and microwave for 1 minute. After one minute, stir and continue to microwave until warmed through. You can add more liquid if necessary to reach the consistency you prefer for your oatmeal.

Are Steel Cut Oats Better For You Than Rolled Oats

Steel cut oats and rolled oats both come from the same whole grain cereal, so they have similar nutrition content and really only differ in their processing. Rolled oats are steamed, then rolled to produce their signature flat look and quick-cooking texture. Because they are tender and cook quickly, they are ideal for adding to baked goods, like my Gluten-free Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Steel cut oats, on the other hand, are less processed. To make steel cut oats, the oat groat is sliced with a steel blade to create more of a chopped, rice-like grain that is chewier in texture and takes longer to cook.

Though, the cooking time isnt a problem when you have an Instant Pot . Just press a button and walk away until its ready! I love not having to babysit my oats on the stove top, or worrying about them burning on the bottom.

The key to cooking perfect steel cut oats in the Instant Pot is allowing the pressure to naturally release after the initial 4 minute cooking cycle. While the pressure releases, the oats absorb the water without burning on the bottom of the pot. This prevents sticking and allows the oats to become perfectly tender. You just have to be patient!

    Instant Pot Rolled Oats:

I have tried cooking rolled oats in the liner of the Instant Pot and it just doesnt work for me. The only way I can get my pressure cooker to cook large flake oats is to use the pot-in-pot method:

  • Stir together the oats, water and salt in a pressure-cooker safe dish that fits inside on the trivet.
  • Add the minimum water requirement for your model to the liner of the Instant Pot and add the trivet.
  • Place the dish with the oats in it on the trivet. Put the lid on, seal the valve, and select Manual or Pressure Cook for 1 minute.
  • Do a quick pressure release which means to open it up right away. I do this so that my oats dont become overcooked.

Cooking Oats Directly In The Pot

To cook the oatmeal in the bottom of your Instant Pot, youll add the oats and water to the bottom of the Instant Pot. Dont use less than 1 cup of oats and 1.5 cups of water for this method, or you might not have enough liquid to bring the pot to pressure.

Secure the lid and move the steam release valve to Sealing. Cook at high pressure for zero minutes. Yes, zero minutes is a real setting!

When the cooking cycle is complete, let the pressure naturally release for 10 minutes. When the screen reads L0:10, you can move the steam release valve to Venting, to release any remaining pressure.

When the floating valve in the lid drops, its safe to remove the lid. The oatmeal should be perfectly cooked, and it wont be stuck to the bottom of your Instant Pot, because you didnt have the heat on for too long.

The longer you let the oatmeal sit there on the keep warm setting, however, the more likely it will be to eventually start to stick.
