Steam Clean With White Vinegar Or Lemon

How to Clean the Instant Pot Sealing Ring

The quickest, easiest, and most foolproof way to clean the silicone sealing ring requires no more than your choice of white vinegar or water and a lemon rind.

Fill the Instant Pot insert with two cups of white vinegar or the same amount of water and a lemon rind, seal the lid, and run the appliance on the steam setting for two minutes. Remove the ring from the lid and let it air dry completely. It should be clean and smell as good as new.

If you use your Instant Pot regularly, removing the silicone ring periodically isnt important just for cleaning, but also to check for damage. If you notice cracking, leaking, or deformation of the sealing ring, its time to replace it.

A Note on Extra Silicone Rings

Kitchn does suggest having more than one silicone ring. No matter how much or how well you clean it, it still may hold onto odors. We suggest having one for savory dishes and one for sweet ones.

How To Get Those Funky Smells Out Of Your Instant Pot

If I have one complaint about the Instant Pot it would be this: It is hard to get the leftover smells out! When I make Chicken Tikka Masala in my Instant Pot, it smells like Chicken Tikka Masala until I make something else that smells more powerful. The Instant Pot owners manual says that you should regularly take out and wash the silicone sealing ring with dish soap to get rid of smells. I have done this on several occasions, but it doesnt seem to completely solve the problem. I have a friend that bought an extra sealing ring. One she uses for her dinner-lunch main dishes and the other one she uses for yogurt making and less smelly food. That is a pretty inexpensive solution. But after an internet search, here are some other ideas that might actually get those smells out.

  • Soak your sealing ring in white vinegar. Dilute the vinegar with some water and allow the sealing ring to soak in the vinegar-water solution for at least an hour. Take it out and wash it with dish soap. Allow it to air dry and then put it back in.

  • Steam clean the entire pot out with vinegar. Vinegar to the rescue again! This time, try filling the Instant Pot with 2 cups of white vinegar. Press the steam button and run the steam cycle for about 2 minutes. Take the ring out to dry.

  • Steam clean the pot with water and lemon. Some people prefer the scent of lemon to vinegar. . Put 2 cups of water in the Instant Pot and lemon rinds. Run the steam cycle for 2 minutes. Take the ring out to dry.

Tips For Instant Pot Saut Mode

    Instant pot sealing ring
    • After you press the Sauté button, wait for the pot to get hot before adding your food. The display on most models will show Hot when the pot is hot.
    • Add cooking oil before adding meats or vegetables to the pot. The exception is that you do not need to add oil if you are browning ground beef or another meat that will release its own fat as it cooks.
    • When browning pieces of meat, such as chicken thighs, do not move the meat until it has formed a browned crust on the bottom. This usually takes a few minutes. Trying to move the meat too soon can cause it to stick to the bottom of the pot. Its also important to use enough oil, as I have found that delicate meats such as chicken tend to stick easily to the bottom of the pot.
    • Always deglaze the pot after sautéing. This means that you pour in a some of your cooking liquid, such as broth or water, and scrape up any bits that are stuck to the bottom of the pot. If you do not do this, you are much more likely to get a burn message while pressure cooking. Learn more about how to prevent the Instant Pot burn message here.

    How To Prolong Gaskets Life

Follow these tips to make your gasket will live longer.

    • Dont forget to wash the gasket after using your pressure cooker. The gasket must be properly cleaned and dried before and after each use.
    • After food is cooked, some particles will often stick to the rim of the pot, including grains of salt, spices, oil, fats, and other food particles. If you dont clean it, the food will stick to the gasket and may tear it as soon as you open the lid the next time. Use a clean and damp cloth to wipe the rim. Remove all the food particles from the rim before locking the lid.
    • Dont let your pressure cooker run dry, because the internal heat can easily damage the gasket material. So, always use water and cooking liquid in a sufficient amount.
    • Avoid playing with the gasket, because twisting, folding, stretching or knotting can easily damage it. Dont let your kids or pet mess with the gasket.
    • As the gasket gets older, it may become dry or brittle. Soak it in hot water for 10 to 15 minutes before using it. However, this is not a permanent solution. You need to replace it as soon as possible.

Wash Instant Pot Parts In Your Dishwasher

Most pieces of the Instant Pot are dishwasher safe. It makes sense: the pieces stand up to the heat of cooking, so they can hold up just fine in the dishwasher. That means you can throw the sealing ring, steam release handle, and accessories in the top rack of your dishwasher for easy cleanup. Depending on your model, you may be able to throw the whole lid in there, too. The inner pot can go in the lower rack, as well.

Of course, you’ll need to do a little disassembling first. Specifically, you’ll need to take out the sealing ring, metal valve cover, and steam release valve from the lid. If your lid is dishwasher safe , you can place it in the top rack of the dishwasher, too. If it’s not, you’ll need to wash the lid separately in your sink. With these smaller parts removed, your dishwasher can clean some of the inner workings of the lid that might not be easily reached otherwise. But if you’re just doing a routine post-dinner wash, it might be a little overkill. Sometimes it’s just easier to throw the lid in the sink and scrub it the old fashioned way.

Do Not Force The Lid Open

16 Reasons why your Instant Pot is not sealing!

Wait until all the internal pressure has been released. If it is difficult to open, that is an indicator that the pressure has not fully released. The float valve will drop down into the lid when all the pressure has been released. At this point, you can hold the lid handle, turn counterclockwise, and remove.

Cook Two Different Foods With The Pot

The Instant Pot is a one-dish wonder, making it easy to create a whole meal out of soups, stews, and pastas that combine multiple ingredients in the pressure cooker. But maybe you don’t want an all-in-one meal. Maybe you can to cook different foods in your Instant Pot and keep them separate. Yes, you could use more than one Instant Pot, but that’s not really necessary.

Instead, you can try pot-in-pot cooking. You’ll use a trivet or steamer rack, as well as small baking dishes, to separate foods that cook at the same time in the Instant Pot. For example, you can cook chicken breasts at the bottom and have a second layer on top to cook rice.

With pot-in-pot cooking, you need to add at least one cup of liquid to the bottom of the inner pot, then add whatever you’d like to cook on that layer. Above it, place a trivet or rack, which you’ll set the next layer on. Put the next layer of food in an oven-safe dish and place it on top of the trivet or rack. Then you’re ready to cook while saving time and space.

How To Cook For Zero Minutes

Yes, there really is a zero minute cooking cycle on the Instant Pot. This short cycle is most commonly used to cook non-starchy vegetables, like broccoli, cauliflower and zucchini. If you cook them for even one full minute, then turn to mush!

Cooking for 0 minutes is the same as cooking anything else on Manual. Press the Manual or Pressure Cook button, then use the button to lower the cooking time to zero minutes. The Instant Pot will still take several minutes to come to pressure , and then as soon as the cooking cycle beeps to signal that its complete, youll quickly release the pressure right away so that the vegetables dont over-cook. It will take 2 to 3 minutes for the pressure to release, so the food will be in your Instant Pot for at least 12 to 15 minutes in total, giving it plenty of time to cook.

    Replacing The Steam Release Handle

There is a metal safety clip inside older models of instant pots to prevent these pots from over-pressurizing. Over time, this ring could get bent and make the steam release handle bend in the sealing position as it would be when set to Venting, making steam escape from the instant pot.

You can buy a new steam release handle and replace it to effectively solve this problem if you notice your instant pot is one of these old models. Alternatively, you can remove the metal ring from the instant pot straighten it with a pliers pair to get it back in position before placing it back into the instant pot.

How To Safely Remove The Lid

Are you worried about your Instant Pot exploding? That was my biggest fear when I got started, too. Luckily, the Instant Pot is loaded with safety features to help prevent that from happening, but the best thing you can do is learn how to use it properly to avoid any user errors.

Its NOT safe to remove the lid from your Instant Pot until all of the pressure has been released from the pot. Youll know its safe to remove the lid when the floating valve in the lid drops. This means all of the pressure is gone, and the Instant Pot lid will easily twist off.

Never ever try to force the lid off the pot if it doesnt twist easily. As a safety precaution, the Instant Pot locks the lid while the pot is still pressurized, so dont try to fight it.

    Check The Sealing Ring

One of the things you have to check in an instant pot before cooking is the sealing ring. Open up your instant pot and push the sealing ring through the ring rack until it is seated properly. To confirm if it is in position, try turning the ring rack.

If it rotates or moves around the ring rack, then you know it is sealed. In the rare case that your sealing ring is misplaced or missing, your pot might start leaking steam by the sides, and it becomes necessary to replace the sealing ring.

Another possibility is that your sealing ring has overextended because of the heat, and it doesnt return to its natural state. Consider putting the sealing ring in a freezer or run cold water on it so it can contract and get back in shape. Check for food debris in the sealing ring that might not let it stay in position so you can remove it with soap and water.
