How to Make Corned Beef in an Instant Pot

This cut of meat is a beef brisket that soaks in brine and then cures with salt and seasonings. Corned beef gets its distinctive pink color from sodium nitrate which is an ingredient in the curing process. This is a tough cut of meat, so its always best to cook corned beef for a long period of time so that it becomes tender. Typical cooking methods include boiling, slow cooking or oven roasting the meat, as well as using an Instant Pot or other pressure cooker.

Faqs For Corned Beef In The Instant Pot

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions for my Corned Beef and Cabbage Instant Pot Recipe.

No you dont need to rinse the corned beef off before cooking. In fact, I pour the pickling juices right into the pot to give it additional flavor.

For this recipe in the Instant Pot I used baby potatoes and baby carrots. I found by not using larger potatoes and carrots it cut down on the prep time .Its all a preference and to me a big time saver to use the smaller no-prep version. I just had to rinse and place them in the Instant Pot. I didnt need to peel and chop. It cut down about 10 minutes of time, and with two little ones to run after Im all about quick prep! Here are the vegetables I like to cook with my corned beef.-CarrotsGarlic

  • Brown Sugar: This is added for sweetening.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: A perfect addition of savory.;
  • Beef Broth: This is used for flavoring and to keep the corned beef brisket from burning.

  • Cook the vegetables:

Place a wire mesh steamer basket inside the pot. Place the carrots and potatoes in the steamer basket, and layer the cabbage on top so that it will fit in the pressure cooker when the lid is on. Its okay if the vegetables are slightly above the 2/3 max fill marking inside the pot, but they should not be piled far above the rim of the pot where it could block the pressure valve mechanisms in the pressure cooker lid.

Secure the lid and set the pressure release valve to its sealing position. Cancel the cooking program, then select the Steam program for 4 minutes at high pressure.

The pot will take about 15 minutes to come up to pressure before the cooking program starts.

When the cooking program ends, perform a quick pressure release by moving the pressure release valve to its venting position right away, taking care not to get burned by the steam.

  • Plate the vegetables:

Open the pot and, using tongs, gently transfer the cabbage, carrots, and potatoes to a serving platter. Or, if you like, toss the vegetables in butter, parsley, and 1/2 teaspoon salt, then transfer to the serving platter.

  • Carve the beef and serve:

Carve the corned beef to the thickness you prefer and arrange it on the serving platter. Pour a little bit of the cooking liquid over the beef and vegetables and serve right away.

Why The Instant Pot Is Best

This Irish girl was raised on Corned Beef and Cabbage, as it was one of my mom’s favorite meals. It reminded her of her childhood and of her family that came to America straight from Ireland.

I share my mom’s love of Corned Beef and Cabbage, but I have found a better way to prepare this Irish meal–the Instant Pot.

Not only is the process faster in the Instant Pot, but the corned beef also becomes more tender and flavorful than when cooked on the stove or in the slow cooker, which is the traditional method.

I will NEVER make Corned Beef and Cabbage any other way!

Whats The Deal With My Corned Beef Being So Tough

Corned Beef and Cabbage (Instant Pot)

Cooking on a high heat setting.

Brisket does not like high heat. Corned beef that has been cooked at a high temperature for an extended period of time will become rough and chewy, rather than supple and tender. Instead, try this: Corned beef is ideally cooked at low heat, regardless of the technique.

    How To Slice Corned Beef

The corned beef doesnt need to be sliced until after it comes out of the instant pot.

Beef tends to be most tender when you slice against the grain. Use your knife, turn the corned beef brisket, and cut so that it doesnt follow the grain.

If you choose not to slice, you can always pull corned beef.; If it doesnt pull and shred easily, it hasnt cooked long enough.

Tips For Serving Your Crock Pot Corned Beef Or Instant Pot Corned Beef

  • Add your baby or chopped carrots, potatoes and onion to the bottom of the Crock Pot
  • Pour your broth and water over the vegetables
  • Place the corned beef right on top of the vegetables
  • Pour your beer over the corned beef and vegetables
  • Spread the included spices evently over the corned beef
  • Put the lid on and cook high for 7 hours
  • After your Crock Pot corned beef has cooked 7 hours youll add your cabbage and cook for another 30 60 minutes, depending on how tender you want your cabbage
  • Remove the beef and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing so it will remain tender.
  • Serve your sliced Crock Pot corned beef with a spoonful or more of the vegetables. Consider having a grainy mustard as a condiment.
  • I like to offer a tradional Irish Soda Bread as well.

OK, I’m not Irish. I can’t even claim the least little bit, but every year on St. Patrick’s Day, I pretend I have a wee bit of Irish in me. I love all the traditions and the wearing of the green, so it is fun to take part anyway and just pretend for a day.; And one of my favorite Irish dishes has got to be corned beef complete with Irish soda bread on the side. Hey mum, are you sure I don’t have any Irish hidden in me somewhere?

This is a simple dish to make in the Instant Pot. It is more or less a dump-and-cook complete dinner, the best kind right, with the vegetables going in separately at the end so as not to overcook. Don’t have an instant pot? No problem! This can actually be made in the crockpot as well, which is a great option when you’re away from the house all day. I’ve included the instructions in the notes section of the recipe card below. However, believe me, when I tell you, this 4-pound corned beef Instant Pot method is so easy and the result so awesome, you might want to go out and get an Instant Pot pronto!

    What Spice Mix Is Best

The BEST Corned Beef and Cabbage – Quick and Easy Instant Pot Recipe

    Most corned beef briskets come packaged with a bag of seasoning spices already in it. That is absolutely fine to use it if you wish but I like to mix my own. Seasoning packet doesnt usually have a few ingredients that I like to add for more flavor and aroma.;

Ingredients that I use in my corned beef seasoning are:

    Mustard seed

    Coriander seeds

    Bay leaves

I add this mix to the broth that corned beef is cooking in and the flavor cant be beat. Aroma is amazing from the minute it starts to cook.

Is Corned Beef And Cabbage From Ireland

Typically in Ireland, pork was the preferred meat as it was less expensive. Their favorite cut was Irish bacon, which is similar to Canadian bacon.

However, when the Irish immigrated to the United States, especially in New York City, pork was extremely expensive. However, the Irish immigrants often shopped at the Jewish delis in New York, and it was there that the Irish first tried corned beef.

It became popular with the Irish immigrants because it was cured and cooked in a similar manner as the Irish bacon. Then the Irish cooked the corned beef with cabbage and potatoes in the same pot, and Corned Beef and Cabbage was born in New York.

As a matter of fact, the first St. Patricks Day parade took place in New York City, not Ireland. And we have been celebrating St. Patricks Day in the United States ever since.

Wear your best Irish green for St. Patricks Day, and have some Irish coffee or Guinness, and make this Corned Beef and Cabbage.

Instant Pot Corned Beef Flavor Variations

This dish is delicious as-is, but you can absolutely add other ingredients to customize the flavors to your tastes.

    • Liquid: Instead of water, feel free to use a light colored beer such as a lager, low sodium beef broth or low sodium chicken broth. Its imperative to use low sodium broth or the finished dish could be overly salty.
    • Potatoes: I typically use baby Yukon gold potatoes, but baby red potatoes also work. You can also use regular sized potatoes of any variety that have been cut into 1 1/2 inch pieces. Keep the pieces similar in size and shape so that they cook at the same rate.
    • Vegetables: Try Savoy cabbage instead of traditional green cabbage. You can also add other types of root vegetables to the mix such as parsnips, turnips and rutabaga.

Youll be amazed at how easy it is to use your Instant Pot to turn a simple meal into something extraordinary.
