How To Make Instant Pot Vegetable Barley Soup
On sautee mode of the Instant Pot cook some onions and chopped garlic in little oil. Then add fresh vegetables like diced carrot, red pepper, celery, and edamame beans. Generously season with dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Finally, add water and veggie or chicken stock or broth. Close the lid and cook on high pressure for about 20 min.
Instant Pot Porridge Setting
The porridge setting on the Instant Pot can be used to cook oatmeal using old-fashioned oats and steel-cut oats, rice porridge and congee or porridge-like dishes that use a mixture of grains that expand in liquid. Ideally, you should use natural release when cooking high-starch foods that expand or a combination of 5-10 minutes natural release and quick release to follow. Below is how to use the Porridge setting on Instant Pot.
- Turn the Instant Pot on, it will say OFF to indicate the Stand-By mode. Add the grains, liquid and spices or fat if you wish. Secure and lock the lid. Press the Porridge button. The default setting is pre-programmed to set the pot to cook at High pressure for 20 minutes. If you press the Porridge button again, you can adjust the mode from Normal to Less or More.
- Less mode 5 minutes at High pressure this is suitable for cooking rolled oats and risotto-like porridge or rice porridge with slightly firmer to bite texture.
- Normal mode 20 minutes at High pressure use for steel-cut oat porridge or rice porridge with a slightly softer texture and for making congee.
- More mode 30 minutes at High pressure use for a porridge/congee that contains a mixture of beans or tougher grains.
If desired, use the / + buttons to further customize the time. The cooking time may be adjusted at any time during pressure cooking.

How Much Liquid Do I Put In My Pressure Cooker
When you use a pressure cooker, you need to have enough liquid in the pot for it to come up to pressure and cook the food properly. The rule of liquids in pressure cooking is to always add at least 1 cup of liquid unless the recipe states otherwise. The liquid will help create enough steam to cook the meal.

Why Use The Pressure Cooker
Pressure cooking in the Instant Pot reduces the cooking time a fair amount. Using an electric one also allows you to leave the pot unattended while it cooks. The cooker will even switch to a Keep Warm setting once cooking has finished so you dont have to worry about turning off the cooker right away when the soup is done.

What Veggies To Use
The short answer is: use any vegetables you want/like/have on hand!
The long answer is
There is no right or wrong answer! Do you have tons of squash from your garden? Use that! Did your neighbor unload his bumper crop of cauliflower on you? Use that! Did you find a great deal on organic beets or broccoli or spinach? Use those!
Mix and match any veggies you like. And, use blended soups as an opportunity to nourish your body with vegetables that are out of your comfort zone. Theyll be blended and you dont have to taste/feel them!
Here are some combinations Ive tried:
- yellow squash + carrot + onion + cauliflower + garlic
- onion + zucchini + celeriac + garlic
- carrot + onion + cauliflower + fresh ginger
- butternut squash + sweet potato + onion + garlic
- cauliflower + onion + zucchini + dried nettle + spinach + garlic
Are you seeing a pattern here? Always onion + garlic!
I love using cauliflower, too either fresh or frozen because it adds a creamy consistency without dairy.
If you like, think of onions + garlic + cauliflower as a base and build on it with:
- squash or zucchini
- sweet peppers, bell pepper, jalapeno
- greens like kale, spinach, and arugula

Why Dont You Add All The Ingredients At Once
Its important to add the ingredients in the order specified in the recipe for optimal cooking.
I opted not to add the tomatoes with the initial soak because it increases the cook time needed for tender beans. Hurst recommends adding tomatoes after the beans are tender.
In addition, I love the pop of color the carrots give to the soup, but theyd be mushy if you added them too soon. Adding the spinach after pressure cooking wilts the spinach, but adds a nice fresh green color.
Adding the lemon juice at the very end enhances the flavor of the beans and adds a little brightness to the soup. If you wanted, you could also add the spice packet with the lemon juice.

You can achieve an incredibly flavorful broth for homemade miso soup in minutes, thanks to the Instant Pot! Our version has tender shiitakes, creamy tofu, fresh scallions and touch of mirin. Instant Pot Saute Setting
The Sauté is another non-pressure cooking program that can be used in place of a frying pan or flat-top grill. For recipes that call for browned onions or garlic, its important to sauté them before adding liquid to the pot as you will release a lot of flavor this way. Another reason to sauté first is for browning meat. Lastly, sautéeing before cooking is a great way to increase heat and reduce the amount of time your pot will take to come to pressure.

- To Use Rotisserie Chicken. Omit the bone-in chicken from the recipe, then stir the cooked, shredded chicken into the soup at the very end.

Instant Pot Poultry Setting
The poultry Instant Pot setting is best for cookingyou guessed itchicken! The mode you choose depends on the size of the chicken pieces and the cut as chicken breast needs less cooking time and is easily overcooked compared to chicken thighs. You can use this setting to cook chicken meat or a dish that contains poultry in it such as chicken and potatoes or chicken and rice . Poultry setting is only available on 6-quart and 8-quart models, not on the mini! Below is how to use the Poultry setting on Instant Pot.
- Turn the Instant Pot on, it will say OFF to indicate the Stand-By mode. Add chicken, seasoning and liquids to the pot. Secure and lock the lid. Press the Poultry button. The default setting is pre-programmed to set the pot to cook at HIGH pressure for 15 minutes, which is suitable for larger pieces of chicken. If you press the Poultry button again, you can adjust the mode from Normal to Less or More .
If desired, use the / + buttons to further customize the time. The cooking time may be adjusted at any time during pressure cooking.
Allow poultry to rest for 5-10 minutes, depending on size. It will reabsorb cooking juices for tender, succulent meat. Essentially, what this means is that you should allow the Instant Pot to release pressure naturally when possible.

Why You Should Make Bone Broth And How To Make It
So what is bone broth anyway? Bone broth is basically stock thats been cooked for such a long time that the tendons and connective tissues have dissolved and the bones are falling apart and fragile. The extra long cook time helps more collagen and nutrients dissolve into the broth. Its because of this that so many people consider it to have healing benefits for the joints, gut and immune system.
We arent nutritionists so we wont go too far into that, but what I can tell you is that bone broth tastes more rich and intense than regular stock or broth. Its absolutely delicious as a warm drink or light soup. I especially love adding a little fresh pepper, minced ginger and herbs to mine. Think of it as a savory tea.
Its also an excellent swap for stocks in soups and since it does taste more flavorful, it can make soups and stews extra delicious. Try it in our Lemony Chicken Vegetable Soup, its excellent.
You can technically make bone broth on the stovetop, but it will take a very long time over 24 hours. Since we cant commit to standing next to a simmering pot for that long, we turn to a pressure cooker or slow cooker to make it. A pressure cooker takes about 4 hours, while the slow cooker will take 24 to 48 hours.
For the most rich and intensely flavored broth, roast your bones. We simply add them in one layer to a baking sheet and roast in a very hot oven until brown. It takes about 30 minutes.
Instant Pot Slow Cook Setting
The Slow Cook is a non-pressure cooking setting that is compatible for use with any common slow cooker/Crockpot recipe. The pot is heated but is not pressurized and the Less, Normal and More modes correspond to Low, Medium and High slow cooker settings but you will need to adjust the time manually.
You might want to use this setting for making dishes ahead of time while youre away from home or overnight. There are times when slow-cooking might work better for certain recipes than quicker pressure cooking. Below are the steps for how to use the Slow Cook setting on Instant Pot.

Turkey soup will last up to 5 days in the refrigerator when stored in an airtight container. You can also freeze turkey soup by putting it in a freezer-safe container with a locking lid. It will keep for 6 months in a freezer or 1 year in a deep freezer.
I love making large batches of soup and freezing them in single-size servings for lunches.
What Noodles To Use
You really can use any noodles you like! However, most chicken noodle soups are made with egg noodles.
If you want to go all-out, you can make absolutely everything from scratch with homemade egg noodles.
I usually stick with store-bought egg noodles. However, when someones sick, I use whatever I have on hand, including ditalini, shells, or orzo.
