Instant Pot Brown Rice Method: 15 Minutes High Pressure 5 Minutes Natural Release Followed By A Quick Release
- Rating: 10/10
- Timing: 30 minutes, including 8 minutes to come to pressure
About this method: Amy and Jacky of Pressurecookrecipes.com are one of the most trusted sources for Instant Pot cooking methods, so, of course, we had to put their brown rice technique to the test. While this method doesnt call for rinsing the rice, the recipe notes include instructions for reducing the water slightly to account for additional moisture if you prefer to rinse. Using a one-to-one water-to-rice ratio, the recipe calls for cooking the rice for 15 minutes under high pressure and using natural release for just 5 minutes to finish cooking.
Results: This method produced the most ideal brown rice: soft and slightly chewy, with separate grains that didnt become sticky or overcooked in reheating. Plus, we loved that there was no rinsing required.
Keeping the rice to water at one-to-one even if you do rinse the rice and doing a short natural release gives you brown rice thats perfectly cooked every time. Amy and Jacky include lots of detailed notes from their testing that can help you adapt this recipe for different electric pressure cookers, too.

Brown Rice In Instant Pot Or Pressure Cookers
Ive tested and made brown rice in many different ways: rice cookers, stovetop, microwaves, and instant pots. These days, Instant Pots are super popular electric pressure cookers that can cook many different types of recipes.;
Brown rice is one of my favorite things to cook in an Instant Pot because its almost foolproof. Cooking brown rice in an instant is definitely faster than using a rice cooker or more hands-free than using a microwave. Using an Instant Pot for brown rice is also much less finicky than cooking jasmine rice in an Instant Pot or cooking white rice in an Instant Pot because the ratios for water and brown rice are similar across the board.;
Since brown rice still has the outer layer of bran intact , it takes a bit longer for it to cook. With the use of an Instant Pot, cooking brown rice takes about 20 minutes of cooking time plus the pressure release time . This is significantly quicker than using a rice cooker, which can take upwards of 45 minutes to cook.;

The amount of water will remain the same. Different kinds of rice, however, take different amounts of time to cook under pressure. Any variety can be cooked at either high or low pressure; it comes out a little fluffier at low pressure, and a little chewier at high pressure.
Although you can cook any variety of rice on the automatic rice setting, brown rice works better on either a manual setting, or a setting thats specifically designed for whole grains, such as the Multigrain setting on the Instant Pot.
Here are my preferred cooking times for rice in the pressure cooker:
- Brown rice: 20 minutes on high pressure for firm rice, or 22 minutes for softer grains

Brown Rice Vs White Rice
Growing up in a Persian family, white rice was always a staple in our home. We had a rice cooker that we would use from time to time but my mom usually made the rice in a pot. However, I had never heard of brown rice until I moved to the US and once I tried it, I understood why it is so popular here. It’s more nutrient and contains more fiber compared to white rice.
Brown rice is a delicious side for so many dishes such as grilled chicken or fish and it’s so easy to make in your instant pot. If you own an instant pot and want to start making some basic recipes with it, this pressure cooker brown rice recipe should be on your list because it comes out perfect every time!
One thing you should know is that brown rice and white rice are the same grain. However, white rice has been processed which means the two layers of;bran and;germ are removed. These two layers consist fiber and vitamin D. Brown rice is not as processed and therefore consists bran and germ so technically it’s more nutritious than white rice.
