Instant Pot Chicken Breast
Holy cow or maybe I should say holy chicken this was the one that gave me the biggest headache. So first I tested three 10-oz breasts at 4 minutes, 5 minutes and 6 minutes. After 4 and 5 minutes, it didnt make it to 165F in the resting period but the 6 minutes one was at 155F after opening and within 4 minutes resting time made it to 165F internal temperature.
My conclusion then was approx. 2 minutes per 3.5 oz , right? WRONG! If you cook a 3.5 oz tiny chicken breast for 2 minutes its totally overcooked . Also, Ive cooked two same weight but different thickness breasts at the same time but they had different internal temperatures after cooking.
Naturally, the next experiment was the thickness. A 1.2-inch thick breast cooked to 165F in 4 minutes.
My conclusion then was 50 seconds for every 1/4 inch OR 1 minute for every 3/4cm, right? WRONG! Because a 1/2-inch chicken escalope was completely overcooked after 2 minutes .
It doesnt make much sense to me BUT Ive got a table for you and we can all just not care about the formula, I would probably have to include surface and distance to heat source and all kinds of complicated things nobody would want to calculate each time they made a breast anyway, so here is a handy bullet list instead:
Can You Cook Chicken Drumsticks From Frozen
Absolutely. But do note, that you want to cook your frozen chicken drumsticks on a medium temperature, or pressure cook them.
Otherwise you can end up with dry overcooked chicken drumsticks.
Plus, never cook frozen chicken drumsticks in the slow cooker as it doesnt get hot enough to fight off the bacteria.
- Method 1 using enchilada sauce
- Recipe 2 using barbecue sauce
- 3rd recipe is chicken adobo Instant Pot style
Both of them have the ability to be as mild or as spicy as you want.

When you have a family it is sometimes hard to make a healthy meal that everyone loves, but drumsticks are a favorite among most kids and many times they are really inexpensive at the store.
I say if I can feed my family of five for under $15 it is a win, and this pressure cooker chicken dinner is one of those..I share my others in this post with lots of cheap Instant Pot recipes.
Why I Love Instant Pot
I am not new to pressure cooking. I was used to the oldschool pressure pot which i had been using for over 10 years. When we moved house 2 years ago, the one i had was one of the things that didnt make it to the new house. I replaced it with Instapot and I can say why did I not get the instant pot sooner! Its been amazing.
- One-pot meals Instant pot is perfect for one pot meals. You can just add ingredients and water to the pot, set the cooking time and go on to do something else until the cooker beeps! It even has keep warm function so food doesn’t get cold.
- Fast – You can cook some meals in just 15 minutes. Simple meals like rice and pasta included.
- Reduce smell and mess
- Food tastes better as the flavors are locked in especially when pressure cooked. You can also make food fresh daily because of how quick you can.
- Multifunction I like that I can do so much with the IP like slow cook, saute, steam and more.
- Keep warm function- that keeps food warm and nice.

Can You Stack Chicken Legs In Instant Pot
You can definitely stack the chicken legs on top of each other in the Instant Pot! You will want to make sure that you make sure that the chicken legs are evenly seasoned before stacking them. This will make sure that the taste is even with every chicken leg you have and that the bottom layer isnt oversaturated.
Frozen Chicken Drumsticks In Instant Pot
The ingredients for instant pot frozen chicken drumsticks, are simple everyday ingredients that you can source, without having to go grocery shopping.
- Frozen Chicken Drumsticks Direct from my freezer and loaded straight into the instant pot. You can use any size, sometimes I will chop thighs and drumsticks in half and load both in.
- Seasoning This depends if you want your skin blackened or not. You can go with salt, pepper, balsamic vinegar, and extra virgin olive oil. Then swap balsamic for honey for the blackened look. Or if you love chicken drumsticks with barbecue sauce, then replace with this.
- Steamer Basket The steamer basket is where I recommend you place your frozen chicken drumsticks. I recommend you read through our best instant pot steamer baskets to make sure you have the right type for instant pot cooking. Or a Plan B is to use your air fryer shelf inside of your instant pot.
Any electric pressure cooker will do a good job at instant pot frozen chicken drumsticks, though we are using our Instant Pot Duo 8 Quart.

Key Ingredients For Instant Pot Chicken Legs
Chicken Legs Head to the grocery store or local butcher shop and pick up the meatiest chicken legs you can find. In this recipe we specifically use chicken drumsticks, which are often referred to as chicken legs. When placing the chicken legs in the pot, be sure to stand them upright on a trivet. The meaty part of the leg should be facing down. Cooking them this way will ensure that the thickest part of the chicken leg is cooked all the way through. You can also use frozen chicken legs in this recipe follow instructions as normal, then increase the cook time to 12 minutes.
Chicken Broth This recipe requires liquid at the bottom of the Instant Pot to create steam which then cooks the chicken. You have the option of using one cup of water here. However, I recommend chicken broth as it packs in so much more flavor.
I love cooking in the Instant Pot. Its so much faster than the oven and it doesnt require heating up the house to do it. This recipe is so simple, and it results in the most tender chicken legs youve ever had.
Chicken legs are inexpensive and easy to make. I always keep chicken legs in my freezer, because theyre so versatile. They can actually be put directly from the freezer into the Instant Pot and it only takes an additional 2 minutes to cook.
In the Instant Pot, it takes just 12 minutes, plus the pressurizing time. In just 25 minutes, dinner is ready and the house is still nice and cool.
Can You Use Frozen Drumsticks
No worries if you forgot to take the chicken out of the freezer. I have done this multiple times. That is why I love my instant pot so much. Rather your meal is frozen or thawed the instant pot does all the work.
If they are frozen, I would coat the drumsticks with the seasoning to ensure that the seasoning doesnt fall off. You probably will need increase your time 5 minutes to make sure they are cooked thoroughly.

Whole Chicken In The Instant Pot
So the interweb research said 25 minutes pretty much for any size chicken. Some tested a 3lbs chicken, some tested a 4 lbs chicken, nobody tested both or more at several different times.
I wanted to find the magic formula for consistent results because not all my chickens are always the same size, right?
SOOOO, I cooked 3lbs chickens at 18 minutes, 23 minutes and 25 minutes. In all three experiments, the internal temperature made it to 165F so a small chicken basically CAN in theory be cooked for 18 minutes only. HOWEVER, the thighs and drumsticks were not nice and tender and rather weird in texture. Plus, there were just a little bit not so clear juices but lightly pinkish .
23 minutes was perfect and 25 minutes was great. No major difference to be honest so Id say 23 minutes is the magic number for a small chicken 3 lbs and under.
The big chickens 4lbs 7oz I tested at 22 and 25 minutes. 22 minutes just barely got to 165F but same as for the small chicken after 18 minutes, the texture wasnt really that perfect. The one cooked for 25 minutes was absolute perfection.

Can You Stack Chicken In Instant Pot
Absolutely you can stack chicken in the Instant Pot. Just make sure that you avoid stacking too large of pieces together, especially frozen. This creates somewhat of an iceberg that is thicker will take longer to cook.
You may end up with some pieces that are cooked or overcooked, and some that are raw if they are touching! I like to stack them to allow as much air flow as possible around each individual piece so they cook evenly.

As for the seasonings use what you normally would. I mean I give you suggestions below as to what was used on this round but if you are a huge garlic salt lover, then add that too.
I personally like to add some during the cook time but re-season when they are done. Id rather under-season and adjust at the end vs. regret adding too much because you cant remove the salt. Plus my husband has high blood pressure so I like to err on the side of less that in our home.

Instant Pot Chicken Thighs & Instant Pot Chicken Drumsticks
I havent tested cooking them to 30 minutes but in theory they should be just fine because if the whole leg is fine up to that time the individual parts should be, too.
My goal testing was finding the minimum time, clearly. Chicken thighs at 10 minutes high pressure + 5 minutes natural pressure release got me the 165 F but with slightly pink fluid and very hard to remove from the bone. Extremely weird texture.
At 15 minutes high pressure they become extremely tender and fall-off the bone. I myself have cooked them for up to 22 minutes and full natural pressure release and they were still divine. Super soft and juicy.
For drumsticks, I noticed that 15 minutes seems to be the absolute minimum for starting to soften down. Anything under may make it to safe temp but not fall-off the bone. I myself have cooked to up to 22 minutes and just like the thighs they were divine. Super soft and juicy.
