Cooking Rice In The Instant Pot Troubleshooting
There are so many variances in brands of rice that it may take a few times of trial and error to get it just right for what you have, but its worth it.
Environmental differences like altitude and water quality can affect cooking times as can the age and moisture content of your rice.
The important thing is not to get discouraged. Keep in mind, cooking on the stovetop can take some trial and error as well.
Here are some of the most common problems encountered when cooking rice in the pressure cooker and what to do about them.
How To Cook Jasmine Rice In The Instant Pot
Its a good rule of thumb to always rinse uncooked rice before you cook it. Place rice in a fine-mesh strainer and run it under the sink of running water. If you dont have a fine-mesh strainer, you can place rice in a bowl of water, swish it around, then drain and do this a few more times until the water is less cloudy. This step helps to remove debris and some of the starch that causes the rice to clump together. Rinsing also helps the rice absorb water faster.
Minimum Amounts Of Rice
One last rule of thumb to keep in mind is that youll need to cook at least 1 1/2 cups of rice in a 6-quart pressure cooker to get nice, even results. This is because the bottom of the pot isnt perfectly flat, but slightly concave. If you use less rice, the grains in the middle of the pot will not cook as evenly, since they wont be submerged in the water as much as the rice on the sides of the pot.
On the flip side, dont overfill your pressure cooker with too much rice, either! It should be half full or less when youre cooking any grains, beans, pastas, or other foods that can tend to foam up. I find that I get the best results when I cook between 1 1/2 and 3 cups of rice at a time.
- TIP! By the way, you can always make extra rice and freeze the extra. Here’s how to do that.
Those are my best tips for cooking rice! Of course, you can also just follow the basic recipe below. Either way, enjoy!

Water To Brown Rice Ratios To Use
Here is a breakdown of the measurements I used for each variety:
- 1 dry measuring cup short-grain brown rice : 8 fluid ounces water
- 2 dry measuring cup short-grain brown rice : 16 fluid ounces water
- 1 dry measuring cup long-grain brown rice : 8 fluid ounces water
- 2 dry measuring cup long-grain brown rice : 16 fluid ounces water
Please note that I only tested 1 and 2 cup recipes for both of these varieties. If you want to make more brown rice at a time, I would suggest starting with the same 1:1 ratio and adding or removing water in the future depending on the final texture of the rice.
Uncle Ben’s Rice Instant Pot
December 25, 2018Gran
For two people, our Aroma rice cooker does a great job with any kind of rice or grain. But when our family gets together, we need quantities of rice and the Instant Pot can deliver them.
Uncle Bens® Original Converted® Brand Rice has been a presence in kitchens throughout my life. The word Converted means that the rice is parboiled, a process that partially boils the rice in the husk. Parboiling drives thiamine and other B-vitamins from the bran to the endosperm where they stay even after the bran is removed later in the manufacturing process. So parboiled rice is more nutritionally similar to brown rice.
When we had 5 children living at home, we used to buy the 10-pound bag of Uncle Bens Rice. The bag stated that size was for large homes and small institutions. On some days, it did seem that our home resembled an institution, specifically the one that used to be in my home town.
Make sure you have Original Uncle Bens Rice. This recipe will not work for Uncle Bens Instant White Rice. And Uncle Bens website says that washing this rice is not necessary.
For 2 cups of rice, this sequence takes about 35 minutes.
For cooking rice, polenta, or anything sticky in an Instant Pot, the person in our family who washes pots and pans is a big fan of the nonstick inner pot manufactured by Instant Pot. It can be used for pressure cooking or any other Instant Pot cooking just like the original metal pot.

The Best Boxed Rice Made In The Instant Pot
For the easiest, tastiest Rice-A-Roni, make it right in your pressure cooker. This Instant Pot Rice-A-Roni recipe has a hands-off approach, which means no stirring or standing over a hot stove. Plus, making it in the Instant Pot frees you to make the rest of dinner while its cooking.
Making rice in the pressure cooker is similar to cooking rice in a rice cooker, except pressure cooking steams the rice with high pressure. This creates tender and flavorful rice each and every time!
My pressure cooker boxed rice recipe is perfect for those with a 3 quart Instant Pots .
After owning a 6 quart Instant Pot for years, I purchased a smaller pot several months ago. I use it more than I ever imagined it is the perfect size for side dishes like Rice-A-Roni and mashed potatoes, for making hard-boiled eggs, and recipes like Salsa Chicken and Sour Cream Pork Chops. The smaller pot is about the same size as a saucepan and is dishwasher safe.
How Many Cups Of Rice Can You Cook In An Instant Pot
In theory: 2.5 cups in a 3-quart Instant Pot. 5 cups in a 6 quart Instant Pot. 6.5 cups in an 8-quart Instant Pot.
This is US standard measuring cups and raw dry rice.
So the mathematical thought for the theory is the following:
- 1 cup of raw white rice gives on average 3 cups cooked rice.
- Instant Pots should not be filled more than 2/3 of its full capacity at any time. So we have to take the expanded rice into consideration.
- A 6-quart Instant Pots capacity is 24 cups and two-thirds of that are 16 cups.
- There should not be more than 16 cups cooked rice in the Instant Pot and since 1 cup raw makes 3 cups cooked we have to divide the 16 by 3. That makes 5.3 cups.
The calculation is only theory though. I have not tried that many cups in my own 6-quart. 4 cups raw dry rice are the maximum I have cooked myself without any issues and with perfect results.

Why Is The Instant Pot Better For Cooking Chicken For Dogs Than Other Cooking Methods
One of the main reasons why the Instant Pot is a better option for cooking chicken for dogs is that there is no need to use any oil. When oil is used to cook meat, it could make the dog sick. With the Instant Pot, the chicken can be cooked directly with the rice in water, eliminating the need for extra fats or oil.
What Is The Best Rice To Water Ratio
Youll be surprised but it is always and for ALL sorts 1:1. Yes, you read that right.
Instant Pot Rice calls for a 1:1 rice to water ratio
You wonder why on the stove different ratios are called for. Well, the secret to rice cooking is that the darker or wilder the rice the longer it needs to cook and the longer something needs to cook, the more water evaporates during the process.
This leads us to the conclusion, that different kinds of rice do not necessarily need different kinds of amounts of water to cook but rather more water to evaporate.
Since the Instant Pot gives a tight seal and high pressure, no water evaporates at all.
So yes, brown rice and even wild rice need the exact same amount of water as white rice in an evaporation-proof environment. *mind-blown*

How Much Water For Instant Pot Rice
You can cook any kind of rice in your pressure cooker, long or short grain, brown or white. No matter what kind of rice Im cooking, I use the same 1:1 ratio of rice to water or broth.
This is probably less water than youre used to using for cooking stovetop rice, and thats because theres very little evaporation when youre using the pressure cooker. This ratio produces fairly firm, separate grainsyou can add a little more water, maybe about 1/4 cup extra, if you like softer rice.
Key Steps For Rice In The Instant Pot
- Rinse the rice before cooking. Rinsing rice before cooking removes any dirt from processing, gets rid of starch that can make the rice sticky, and, Ive found, makes the rice taste better. According to Instant Pots manual, rinsing the rice also makes up for the small amount of moisture lost in evaporation during the cooking process.
- Use the right ratio of rice to water. Instant Pot suggests any rice can be cooked with a one-to-one rice-to-water ratio, but during testing, we found this wasnt universally true both among Instant Pot models and other multi-cookers. Use slightly more water when cooking brown rice and wild rice to prevent undercooking and scorching. Plus, its better to err on the side of more water, since most rice varieties can be drained if theres excess moisture.
- Pressure cook the rice on high. Lock the lid in place and set to cook at HIGH pressure for the following times:
- White rice : 5 minutes
- Long-grain brown rice: 10 minutes
- Wild rice: 15 minutes

Should I Add Oil To Rice
Theres no need to add oil to your rice unless you like the flavor of additional olive oil. Adding oil to the rice will prevent the rice will becoming too sticky. The oil coats the rice and doesnt allow it to absorb as much water.
I find that the flavor doesnt change at all if I add oil or not! So, I save the calories and skip it.
If I want to make a rice pilaf and add some extra flavor, then I will add oil. First, toast the rice on saute mode with olive oil or butter, then add liquid.
How To Make It
To make this, I start with 2 cups of brown rice and 2 ½ cups of water, stock or broth.
I then seal my Instant Pot and set the timer for 15 minutes. I then let my Instant Pot release pressure naturally. Youll see that all of the liquid from the water, stock or broth that you added are absorbed into the rice making it tender and delicious.
Youll also notice that I do not add a lot of seasoning to my recipe as it cooks. Heres why. I prefer to leave it unseasoned so that I can season it based on the dish that I am serving it with or including it in. Of course, if you are preparing your rice to serve immediately, seasonings are perfect to include. If you are making batches of it like I like to do, youll most likely prefer for it to be unseasoned as well.
Fluff your rice using a fork and then serve.

How To Store Rice
If you have extra rice, you can refrigerate or freeze the leftovers for later, but you need to take certain precautions for food safety. Uncooked rice can be contaminated with spores of a bacteria that can survive the cooking process. If cooked rice is left to sit at room temperature, the bacteria may multiply.
Its best to eat cooked rice right away after cooking. If you have leftover rice, cool it quickly by laying it out in a thin layer. Refrigerate or freeze rice as soon as possible after cooking . Use refrigerated cooked rice within 2 days or frozen rice within a month. Reheat rice until steaming hot before serving.
Manual Settings For Instant Pot Rice
Otherwise, rinse the rice and add it to the pot. Add the water . Add a bit of butter or olive oil if desired. Its not necessary but it adds nice flavor. You can also use diluted chicken or vegetable broth instead of the water for even more flavor.
Season with salt.
Place the lid on the Instant Pot and lock it. Make sure the valve is sealed. Press Manual or Pressure Cook depending on your machine, select HIGH, and use the + or buttons to adjust the cooking time to 5 minutes. Turn off the Keep Warm button, if possible, which would cause the rice to overcook.
When the time is up, allow the pressure to naturally release . When the valve has dropped after the pressure has naturally released , open the Instant Pot .
