Boiling Water Using An Instant Pot

Pot in Pot Cooking 101 || Instant Pot

This might sound unreasonable but knowing how to boil water properly is very essential. This helps you to get comfortable with your appliances and also tells you how they work. This also makes sure that your instant pot is working adequately.

So learning how to boil water is not just for beginners but also for well-experienced cooks as this will help you in avoiding any kind of common mistakes that people tend to make with their appliances while using them.

When we boil water the water changes from liquid to more energetic gas molecules that are known as vapor.

While using an open appliance such as the stove or anything which has an open space the gas molecules can escape into the air but using an instant pot they get trapped inside as nothing is pushing them back. This creates more pressure.

This is the time where an instant pot shows its magic. As the gas vapor cannot escape it creates more pressure inside and it prevents water from turning into a gaseous state and there is more pressure hence water gets hotter quickly.

Water cannot get hotter than 100 degrees celsius thats why we can even use an instant pot for boiling water.

How Does An Instant Pot Work

During cooking in a normal pot, steam constantly escapes into the air which decreases the pressure. But in instant pot steam is gathered inside the pot, this helps build the pressure. The pressure is the key to instant cooking.

When the steam cant escape into the air the pressure inside the instant pot keeps increasing, this causes the pot to have extra heat. This is the whole mechanism behind the ability of these pots to instantly boil water or cook food for that matter.

That explains why you can use an instant pot for boiling water.

Why Cook Pasta In The Instant Pot

There are three reasons to cook pasta in the Instant Pot / pressure cooker.

  • Its a true one pot dish. No need to strain the pasta after its done because the pasta will absorb all of the water as it cooks.
  • Set it and forget it. Theres no need to keep an eye on the pot to make sure it doesnt boil over. Just turn the machine on and walk away.
  • Keep the starch Since the pasta isnt strained, all of the natural starch from the pasta stays in the pot and serves as a natural thickener for any type of sauce you add whether its marinara sauce or creamy cheesy sauce .

  • How Long Does An Instant Pot Take To Boil Water

Except for all the good things, one point that you may not prefer is timing. Boiling water in an instant pot requires more time than that of an electric kettle. Its something obvious because the kettle is designed to boil water to make tea or other hot drinks that you may need. But the instant pot is a multipurpose cooking pot, so there is no inbuilt function for boiling water, you have to use other functions that may suit boiling water.

An instant pot takes 5 to 8 minutes to boil water that is eligible to drink. You can put the timer to get the required temperature. Sometimes we can just need lukewarm water to drink or use in the bath for babies. But you have to pour purified water in this case.

Mistake: On the contrary, when there is too much cooking liquid in the Instant Pot, it will increase the overall cooking time . This may overcook the food.

Plus, too much cooking liquid will dilute the seasoning, resulting in a bland dish.

Solution: Unless stated in a recipe, we recommend new users to use 1 cup of total liquid until they get comfortable with the machine.

How To Boil Water In Your Instant Pot

The makers of Instant Pot actually recommend boiling water in your appliance every once in a while. Not only does this kill any germs, but it also ensures that your device is working.

However, if you want to boil water for cooking purposes, first make sure that your Instant Pots interior is clean. Clear away any foodstuffs, residue, or other byproducts that could leach into your water. Then:

  • Measure three cups of water and pour it into your Instant Pot.
  • Put on the lid, making sure to lock its valves for that airtight seal.
  • Select the high-pressure function and set it for three minutes.
  • Wait until the three minutes are up.
  • Release any built-up pressure from the Instant Pot.
  • Open the lid.
  • Of these steps, number two is perhaps the most important. If your Instant Pot doesnt have that airtight seal, steam will escape from the pot, effectively increasing the amount of time it takes for your water to boil.

Note: If you want to boil more than three cups of water, increase the time on the keypad.

There are many presets on the instant pot, and if you utilize them properly, you might as well be able to use them for boiling water. Here is a step by step guide that you need to follow when boiling water in an instant pot

  • Pour water in the instant pot. It should be poured in the inner cup.
  • Now seal the instant pot properly by placing a lid on top of the valve.
  • Now it is time to adjust the pressure settings. You need high pressure for this! Set the pressure settings at high and set the timer for about 5 minutes. It may take you a minute more or less depending on the quantity of water
  • The pot will start to maintain a high pressure, once it reaches that. The timer will start counting from 5 to 0.
  • Roughly after 3-4 minutes, the cooker will beep, which means that the water inside has boiled and it will automatically switch to the keep warm function.
  • You can turn off the pot now if you wish. Or you can just let it sit for some time to ensure proper boiling. I would recommend that you let it sit for some time.
  • When you open your pot, be sure to do it cautiously as it will release the extra pressure that is generated while boiling the water.

How Long To Boil Whole Potatoes In The Instant Pot For Making Mashed Potatoes

If you wonder how long should you boil potatoes in the instant pot so that they will be soft enough to make yummy mashed potatoes, here is the answer for your question.

In this recipe for boiled or steamed potatoes in the instant pot without trivet, we cook the whole potatoes for about 30 minutes in high pressure to make soft & creamy potatoes.

These perfectly cooked creamy yellow potatoes are perfect for making easy and delicious mashed potatoes.

Notice that the 30 minutes cooking time is for whole potatoes & not diced ones.

So basically, the process is so much more easier with the instant pot, because without even peeling or cutting the potatoes, you need just thirty minutes time to boil the whole potatoes.

The potatoes that we use here are yellow potatoes or yukon gold potatoes, which are perfect for making mashed potatoes.

Keep in mind that the instant pot takes a few minutes to come to pressure and another few minutes to release the pressure, which is not included in this boiling time for potatoes.

If you want to boil potatoes for a potato salad, you can use the same method of cooking but you might want to reduce the cooking time because the cooking time used in this recipe is 30 minutes, which is for making very soft cooked potatoes.

You get tender potatoes by cooking this way and you can easily pierce the potatoes using a fork.

If you want to make creamy mashed potatoes that are super soft in texture, I recommend boiling the potatoes for an adiitional 5 minutes.
