What is the best Instant Pot size for your needs? They range from small to very large, so it can be difficult for a first-timer to decide what size would suit their needs.

Weve tried them all and have some tips and information to help you choose the right one. Consider the factors listed below to discover the perfect Instant Pot size for you.

Where To Start When Choosing An Instant Pot Size

Depending upon the brand and model, a wide variety of pressure cooker sizes are available.

You can find anything from a relatively petite 3 quart model to the largest instant pot size at a whopping 14 quarts. How on earth is a person supposed to choose?

Here are 3 key considerations to help you choose the best pot capacity for your household:

1. Food Quantities and How You Cook

The first thing to take a look at is how many people you usually cook for. For these purposes, a small group is usually considered to be 1-3 people, and a large one 4 or more.

The second thing is to analyze your cooking style.

Do you like to cook every day? Do you want to have leftovers, or just enough for one meal? Have you embraced instant pot freezer meal cooking and want your freezer fully stocked?

If you like to cook small amounts more frequently, and are cooking for a small group, a smaller model is the way to go.

Unless youre cooking for just one or two and dont like leftovers, the 3-Quart size will probably still be too small for this, but a 6-Quart model could suit your needs perfectly.

Cooking for groups or batch cooking?

If youre cooking often for a bigger group, or want to cook freezer meals to stash away, youll want to go with a larger model.

Consider an 8-Quart to be the starting point for this, and if youre cooking for more than 6 people, youll certainly want to think about even larger sizes.

The 6-quart Instant Pot holds 4 quarts of food and is big enough to feed a family of 4 with leftovers. It is the most popular size of Instant Pot.

If you are trying to make sure you have the counter space or cabinet space for one, they are 13.4 inches long, 12.5 inches wide, 12.5 inches tall. It weighs about 13 pounds. So, it takes up a good amount of space and can be pretty heavy.

The 6-quart Instant Pot is the most popular size machine sold, and for a good reason. It feeds a family of 4 comfortably, usually with leftovers.

It is the perfect size if you have a lot of hungry family members.

You can make a huge pot of soup, cook a whole chicken, and batch cook bone broth. And most Instant Pot recipes are written for the 6-quart pot. If you buy anything smaller or bigger, youll have to scale the recipe and adjust cooking times. Some even come with Smart WiFi!

But dont buy the smaller machine because you think cooking time will be faster.

All of the models will cook food in the same amount of time using high pressure. But the larger the model, the longer it will take to come to pressure. It will also take longer to release pressure.

Its not a lot of time, but just keep that in mind when you are considering your options.

Why I Own An Instant Pot

The Best Instant Pot for You: A Comprehensive Guide to Every Size and ...

I have been pressure cooking since I was 14, watching my mom and grandma use their stovetop pressure cookers to whip up delicious and healthy meals everyday. The reason I love pressure cooking is because it enables me to make tasty healthy food AND spend more time with my family.

Apart from being a time saving cooking style, I love that the ingredients have a chance to marry together. Pressure cooking releases a gentle heat that allows the spices to release their natural oils and aromas, and the end result is a combination of flavors that makes it seem as if the recipe has been slow cooking for hours.

It’s a wonderful combination of infused flavors, perfect for anything from curries, lentils, meat dishes, soups and chilis to dump and start one-pot meals.

Instant Pots really are versatile machines. They are more than just pressure cookers. They can sauté, make yogurt, cook rice, and even bake. You might be surprised to learn that they can even be used to boil water!

It takes 4-8 minutes on average to boil water in your Instant Pot. Large amounts of water can be boiled under pressure in about 5 minutes. You should use the sauté function when boiling 1-2 cups of water.

Why Arent The Other Instant Pot Models Wirecutter Picks

The Duo Plus is an upgraded version of the Duo series . But the differences are so minor that we dont think the price hike is warranted . The only real changes in the Duo Plus are a sous vide setting and the display . But compared with the Duos design, the Duo Pluss screen is smaller, and the control panel isnt nearly as streamlined. Also, the Duo Plus lacks features that make the Pro special, namely the improved inner pot, the additional temperature-control options, and a quieter steam-release valve.

The Instant Pot Max offers a higher pressure setting than other Instant Pot models have, as well as stirring and sous vide features. In theory, such features should increase the overall functionality of the cooker and speed up cooking times. Unfortunately, during testing, we found that the Max took longer to come up to pressure, the sous vide feature never reached its target temperature, and the stirring function left much to be desired. Ostensibly, the Maxs higher pressure setting makes it a better option for those whod like to use their Instant Pot for canning. But we havent tested it for that use specifically, so we cant address those claims.

Why Am I Getting The Instant Pot Burn Message

There’s likely not enough liquid in the Instant Pot to safely continue cooking. Press the cancel button and carefully perform a quick release the moment you get a burn warning. Once the steam is released, check the contents. If there isn’t enough liquid, add half a cup.

What Is An Instant Pot

Which Instant Pot Should I Buy? Instant Pot Lux VS Instant Pot Duo

Instant Pot is a multi-cooker from Instant Brands. A multi-cooker is an appliance that has many functions including pressure cooker, rice cooker, slow cooker, yogurt maker, steamer, etc.

The functions that are offered in each model can vary. Some models have additional functions such as air fryer and/or sous vide. All these functions are also known as smart programs.

Also mistakenly referred to as Insta pot, Instant Pot has become so popular in recent years that the word Instant Pot is used as a generic name for pressure cookers of any brand.

Although the Instant Pot multicooker has many different functions, the most commonly used is the Pressure Cook function. Pressure cooking allows you to cook foods in a fraction of the time it would take in a pan or in an oven.

If youre new to the Instant Pot and arent familiar with how to use it, here are my guides on how to use some popular Instant Pot models:

How Do Electric Pressure Cookers Work

Dating back to the 1600s, pressure cooking involves using heat and pressure for cooking food more quickly. Before the Instant Pot revolutionized the industry, pressure cookers were non-electric stovetop devices. But, Instant Pot changed that with its countertop electric version.

For pressure to build in the cooker, the pot needs to have sufficient liquid , and the lid must be airtight. The steam created from the heated fluid causes the pressure to build and permits higher cooking temperatures and thus faster cooking.

Once you’re done cooking, you must first release the pressure before removing the lid. This step varies by model so consult your multicooker’s user manual to do this safely.

Instant Pots Are Safe

If youve never used an instant pot or a pressure cooker before, reading this article and how these pots build up steam on the inside can make you wonder whether they arent a safety hazard, especially since they sound as if they could blow up at any minute.

Fortunately enough, thats not the case. You see, modern instant pots come with a wide variety of safety features that ultimately make them completely safe to use. From their full stainless steel design to their locking lids and pressure release valves, the modern instant pot simply cannot explode, regardless of what you decide to cook.

Are Electric Multicookers Safe

For the most part, today’s electric pressure cookers are safe. However, you still need to be careful.

Many people are afraid to use electric pressure cookers because they have heard stories of them exploding on the stove. That was a problem with the old stovetop models, but several safety mechanisms minimize the chance of this happening with modern electric cookers.

“I was never concerned about a multicooker exploding on the countertops,” said chef and chocolatier Anne Wolf.

Jeffrey Eisner, the author of “The Step-by-Step Instant Pot Cookbook,” agreed. “If you’re going to compare pressure cookers from back in the day when they were on stovetops to today’s that are electric and lock in place, a big difference is today’s lids will stay securely on top,” said Eisner. “I feel comfortable using them, and I’ve never been afraid. I’ve never had any issues personally.”

However, today’s electric pressure cookers are not without their risks. “I did find that it’s easy to burn yourself on the steam when you’re doing a quick release,” said Wolf. “So, there’s some burn risk.”

The best way to minimize the burn risk when releasing the pressure is to use a wooden spoon or another long utensil to engage the steam release valve. The steam always comes from the top, so make sure you are not standing over the cooker when releasing the steam.
