Type For Rice For Instant Pot Fried Rice

For fried rice, be sure to NOT use a quick rice, such as minute rice. Instead, use a standard long-grain white rice, or Jasmin rice. You can also use brown rice, but this recipe was not tested with brown rice and you will need to adjust cooking time significantly. I have seen others make Instant Pot fried brown rice by cooking the rice for 25-28 minutes on manual high pressure.

Are You Sure You Dont You Need More Water

Youre probably used to using a lot more water when you cook rice, but using regular pots or rice cookers lets out a ton of steam. Because the Instant Pot is a sealed pressure cooker, very little water is lost to evaporation, so you can use a lot less.

Most people find that the 1:1 ratio produces the perfect result, but if you like your rice a little softer, you can add a little more than the recommended 1 cup of water per cup of dry rice.

To ensure that the rice cooks evenly, it is not recommended to use less than 1 cup of water per cup of rice.

How Much Rice Can You Cook In An Instant Pot

The recipe below is for cooking 2 cups of rice, which will yield about 6 cups of cooked rice. The water to rice ratio and cook time stay the same regardless of the amount of rice you are cooking.

You can cook more rice as long as you dont exceed the maximum fill lines on your pot. Rice will expand as it cooks, so you have to account for this:

  • You can double this recipe to cook 4 cups of rice in a 6 quart Instant Pot, which will make about 12 cups of cooked rice.
  • If you have an 8 quart Instant Pot , you can triple this recipe to cook 6 cups rice. This will make about 18 cups of cooked rice.

Instant Pot Poultry Setting

Instant Pot Duo Evo Plus 9

The poultry Instant Pot setting is best for cookingyou guessed itchicken! The mode you choose depends on the size of the chicken pieces and the cut as chicken breast needs less cooking time and is easily overcooked compared to chicken thighs. You can use this setting to cook chicken meat or a dish that contains poultry in it such as chicken and potatoes or chicken and rice . Poultry setting is only available on 6-quart and 8-quart models, not on the mini! Below is how to use the Poultry setting on Instant Pot.

  • Turn the Instant Pot on, it will say OFF to indicate the Stand-By mode. Add chicken, seasoning and liquids to the pot. Secure and lock the lid. Press the Poultry button. The default setting is pre-programmed to set the pot to cook at HIGH pressure for 15 minutes, which is suitable for larger pieces of chicken. If you press the Poultry button again, you can adjust the mode from Normal to Less or More .

If desired, use the / + buttons to further customize the time. The cooking time may be adjusted at any time during pressure cooking.

COOKING TIPS

Allow poultry to rest for 5-10 minutes, depending on size. It will reabsorb cooking juices for tender, succulent meat. Essentially, what this means is that you should allow the Instant Pot to release pressure naturally when possible.

How To Reheat Rice In The Instant Pot

So, Ive seen a couple of people recommend adding water or oil and stir it in the inner pot and pretty much making a mess, haha.

Um, not my favorite method.

I like things simple. I basically want the same convenience as a microwave but without the waves.

I store my leftover rice in a heat-proof glass container and then place the trivet in the Instant Pot, add a cup of water and place the rice uncovered on the trivet. Put the lid on, knob to sealing and press steam for 5 minutes. Quick pressure release, done!

Instant Pot Multigrain Setting

This setting is best suited to cooking tougher, whole grains like brown and wild rice, farro, millet and steel-cut oats it can also be used to cook dry beans and a mixture of grains and legumes. We find that this is one of the most confusing functions for people because some of the recommended manual cooking times for grains dont match the pre-programmed setting times, so its hard to know when to use this function. Below is how to use the Multigrain setting on the Instant Pot.

  • Turn the Instant Pot on, it will say OFF to indicate the Stand-By mode. Add the grains, liquid and seasoning if you wish. Secure and lock the lid. Press the Multigrain button. The default setting is pre-programmed to set the pot to cook at High pressure for 40 minutes. If you press the Multigrain button again, you can adjust the mode from Normal to Less or More.

If desired, use the / + buttons to further customize the time. The cooking time may be adjusted at any time during pressure cooking.

If cooking dry beans, ensure they are completely submerged in water the same if youre making a mixture of grains and beans.

Having shiny, slightly sweet, plump, and delicious Japanese rice is the true comfort and luxury for me, so I am willing to spend a little more to purchase short grain Japanese rice from Japan . What Is Chinese Sausage

Instant Pot White Rice

Chinese sausage is made from fatty pork. It is normally smoked, sweetened, and seasoned with rose water, rice wine, and soy sauce. Depending on the brand, the sausage itself can be quite tough. But once cooked with the rice, it becomes melt-in-your-mouth tender. The fat and sweetness melt into the gooey rice and taste so good.

These days you can easily find Chinese sausages in an Asian market. Ive even seen Costco carry them a couple of times. If you cant find them in your local stores, you can also purchase them from .

Pressure Cooking With The Instantpot

The InstantPot has a lot of pre-set programs you can use to cook beans, rice, meat, soups, etc. However, being the scientist I am, I dont tend to like these programs. Whereas many will greatly appreciate them, I prefer understanding whats going on myself. Therefore, lets take a better look at the settings of an InstantPot .

Pressure: high & low

The InstantPot has to two settings for pressure:

  • High Pressure: 10.2 to 11.6 psi
  • Low Pressure: 5.8 to 7.2 psi

This means that while cooking in your pressure cooker the pressure in the cooker is: the pressure around you + the pressure mentioned above. So at high pressure, youre cooking at 1.7-1.8 bar, which will drastically increase the boiling point of your water. At 1.7-1.8 bar the boiling temperature of water is 115.2-116.9°C. At the lower pressure setting this temperature is 109.3-111.4°C.

If youre wondering when youd use the low pressure setting, youre not the only one. If youre using a pressure cooker to speed up cooking youd want the highest possible pressure and thus temperature. There only seem to be a few exceptions I found online, cooking eggs and rice are sometimes done at low pressure. Let me know if you have any others.

Instant Pot Duo 7

Good question. If youâre counting all of Instant Potâs devices including appliances outside pressure cookers, there are a lot. If youâre only counting pressure cookers, itâs still pretty confusing. Instant Pot added a slew of new cookers in 2019 and again in 2020.

Hereâs how to compare each Instant Pot model:

  • Functions: Pressure cooking, slow cooking, rice cooking, steaming, warming, sautéing
  • Sizes: 3 quart, 6 quart, 8 quart

Should You Rinse Rice

Yes or No. The rice I buy actually specifies on the package not to rinse the rice. Washing the rice washes away nutrients that the rice was enriched with.

I use dry rice in this Instant Pot rice recipe.

If the packaging on your rice specifies to wash or rinse the rice before cooking, youll want to do that.

If you do rinse your rice, you dont need it to be perfectly clear like when youre making Japanese rice. Rinsing the rice will make it less sticky as it washes away the starches that make rice sticky.

With peak mango season, weve been making a lot of mango desserts like mango sticky rice, sorbet, and mango sago pudding. Making mango sticky rice used to be a hassle for me especially with soaking the rice the night before, steaming and making sure it comes out with the perfect consistency. Recently I started making the sticky rice in the Instant Pot and its so nice to have this popular Thai dessert whenever the craving hits.

How Long Does Rice Take In The Instant Pot

Instant Pot Duo Nova 8qt Rice Function
  • 5 minutes for white rice, followed by 10 minutes NPR.
  • 15 minutes for brown rice, followed by 15 minutes NPR.

NPR stands for Natural Pressure Release, which means simply let the Instant Pot sit untouched after the cooking time is up. On the display, if it reads L00:10, it means its been 10 minutes NPR. Then you turn the valve to venting to release the remaining pressure before opening the lid.

Its important to let pressure cooker release pressure naturally for the specified time, because its still part of the cooking time.

How To Cook Two Cups Instant Pot Rice

If you need more rice all you have to do is double the amount of rice so 2 cups of rice with two cups of water.

Always use the same cup to measure the rice and the water. Use the same settings so set to Manual or Pressure Cooking for 4 minutes on high.

Natural release for 5 minutes then quick release.

Some pressure cookers require more water. If your rice is still hard after cooking add 1/4 cup extra water.

It is a test to see what works for your pressure cooker.

Natural Pressure Release Vs Quick Pressure Release

Whats better? Hands down, no doubt > > natural pressure release. If you cook rice longer so you can do quick pressure release, with the hope to have the rice cooked faster overall, it gets sticky and mushy.

I encourage you to be patient and wait for natural pressure release. I timed all rice and there doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to the timing. Even the same kind of rice in the same amount has had different natural pressure release times.

1:1 Water/Rice ratio White Rice 3 Minutes at high pressure with a natural releaseBrown Rice 22 minutes at high pressure with a natural release

Beth, you mean to tell me you can cook white rice in 3 minutes?

This is one of my favorite things to have cooking while Im making another meal, because its like borrowing time. Im already in the kitchen cooking or doing dishes or whatever, so its easy to throw in the rice and water into the IP and let it go while Im busy. Then, I pack up the rice in containers or plastic storage bags to keep in the fridge or freezer for later meals. It so SO handy to be able to pull out precooked rice whenever I need it, but without the convenience tax thats added on to precooked frozen rice at the grocery store. Its a small time investment with a big payoff.
