What Does An Instant Pot Do
Yeah, why can’t you just get a regular slow cooker? At their core, Instant Pots are electric pressure cookers. The proprietary locking lid creates a seal that heats any water inside far past its boiling point, turning it to steam. When that steam has nowhere else to go, it creates pressure thus cooking food 2-10 times faster than what an oven or slow cooker could do.
The Instant Pot’s heart is a microprocessor aided by built-in temperature sensors that give Instant Pots the ability to 1. Mimic the cooking functions of multiple different appliances and 2. Switch between those functions at the press of a button. This collection of programs can be tweaked and tailored to perform super specific tasks that you may have struggled with pre-Instant Pot . They get down to the nitty-gritty of heat intensity, pressure, and cooking duration to achieve more precise results in the kitchen. Instant Pot Duo Plus Review
The Pot DUO Plus is an improved version of the Pot Duo version. As such, it has similar functionalities but also comes with extra features that make it more attractive for certain people.
Starting with the similarities, this version also comes in 3, 6, and 8qt sizes and weighs 12 pounds. Just like the DUO 60, it has a large front control panel, but it is slightly larger and organized a bit differently. Also, there is an inner steel pot thats easy to clean and prevents food from sticking to the surface.
Now, lets have a look at the things that set the two apart. First, the Instant Pot Duo Plus can replace nine different appliances in your kitchen, as it is a 9-in-1 product. As such, when you buy it, you get a Pressure and Slow Cooker, Rice Cooker, Saute, Warmer, Steamer, Egg, Sous vide, Yogurt, and Cake Maker. In addition. Also, you can use it as a sterilizer, to keep utensils and other sensitive objects clean and safe.
The DUO Plus Instant Pot comes with 12 pre-set temperatures, 15 pre-programmed dishes, and 10 safety features. If these features look familiar, they are pretty much the same as with the DUO 60, with the added Cake Mode to the list of pre-programmed dishes.
Overall, the Instant Pot Duo Plus may be a bit more expensive than the first model, but it comes with new and interesting features that may be more to your liking.

We were also impressed with the fluffy texture and aromatic quality when cooking basmati rice, which was just as good as a conventional rice cooker.

How We Test Instant Pots
We lined up the Instant Pot Lux, Duo, Duo Plus and Ultra for a side-by-side comparison in which we evaluated cooking capabilities, time, temperature, controls and the final cooked results. Although each model is available in multiple sizes, we purchased the 6-quart model of each to eliminate any variables related to volume.
We purposely selected these five cooking methods and their corresponding ingredients, as they represent the most common uses for Instant Pots.
- Soft-boiled eggs: to use the Egg program or Low Pressure setting
- Long-grain rice: to test the Rice program on each pot
- Diced onions: to test the Sauté setting
- Chicken thighs: to evaluate how the High Pressure setting worked

What We Dont Like
Used for either air frying or pressure cooking individually, the Duo Crisp does nothing exceptional. As an air fryer, it has a lot of the same shortcomings as the standalone air fryers weve tested. The fryer basket, although larger than some weve tested, is still cramped, which makes it difficult to cook food evenly. We found that the basket couldnt handle more than about 12 ounces of chicken tenderswhen we made a larger, 16-ounce batch, the results were slightly mushy in the middle. We were able to cook 1½ pounds of frozen fries in the Duo Crisp but had to toss them more often than Instant Pot suggests. And the resulting fries were classic air fryer quality: dryish on the outside, with mostly fluffy interiors. For more evenly cooked, crispier results, we prefer cooking finger foods in a toaster oven or regular oven.
As a pressure cooker, the Duo Crisp lacks a lot of the preprogrammed settings that make the Instant Pot Duo or Ultra so convenient to use. You cant simply press a button to cook rice, for example, or stewinstead you have to look up the correct time and pressure setting and program it manually. The Duo Crisp also doesnt have a setting for making yogurt, which is admittedly a bit niche but something that some people love about their Instant Pot.
