How to make Long Grain White Rice in your Instant Pot

Alex and I cook rice quite a bit, but it wasnt until recently that we mastered our method for Instant Pot rice. As noted above, cooking rice in the Instant Pot is only a few minutes faster than cooking it on the stovetop. So why bother learning how to cook rice in an Instant Pot? We like that it cooks it perfectly every time, and we dont have to worry about checking a pot thats simmering on the stove. In that way, its just like a rice cooker.

Our magic formula for our Instant Pot rice is as follows, and its different for white and brown rice. This recipe is currently for long grain rice only; well update it once weve tested short grain rice! Use the pressure cooker to do the following:

  • Instant Pot White Rice: Pressure;cook on high for 8 minutes;and then use the;natural release process for 10 minutes.
  • Instant Pot Brown Rice: Pressure;cook on high for 20 minutes;and then use the;natural release process for 10 minutes.

As always, we have found that there are variations in rice brands and Instant Pot / pressure cooker brands. If the timing in this Instant Pot rice recipe is a little off, you can make minor adjustments to the cook time. Let us know in the comments below how it goes for you!

Key Steps For Rice In The Instant Pot

  • Rinse the rice before cooking. Rinsing rice before cooking removes any dirt from processing, gets rid of starch that can make the rice sticky, and, Ive found, makes the rice taste better. According to Instant Pots manual, rinsing the rice also makes up for the small amount of moisture lost in evaporation during the cooking process.
  • Use the right ratio of rice to water. Instant Pot suggests any rice can be cooked with a one-to-one rice-to-water ratio, but during testing, we found this wasnt universally true both among Instant Pot models and other multi-cookers. Use slightly more water when cooking brown rice and wild rice to prevent undercooking and scorching. Plus, its better to err on the side of more water, since most rice varieties can be drained if theres excess moisture.
  • Pressure cook the rice on high. Lock the lid in place and set to cook at HIGH pressure for the following times:;
  • White rice : 5 minutes;
  • Long-grain brown rice: 10 minutes;
  • Wild rice: 15 minutes
  • Let the rice natural release for at least 10 minutes.;Using natural release for rice yields fluffy results and less likelihood that the rice on the bottom of the pot will stick or burn.
  • Rice Cookers And The Instant Pot

    When you cook white rice on the stove, the typical ratio is 1 part rice to 2 parts water. With rice cookers you don’t need to remember ratios at all. Just measure rice with the cooker’s cup accessory . Then fill the machine’s pot to a precalibrated water line to match your uncooked rice amount.

    Rice cookers often have multiple water volume lines. The one you choose depends on the kind of rice you plan to make. Not so with an Instant Pot, which has just one series of suggested water volume lines that matches the water levels that standard rice cookers suggest for white rice. It also translates to a 1:1 ratio . Most importantly, the volume lines account for displacement caused by the volume of rice itself .

    Instant Pot also recommends a 1:1 ratio for all grains of cooked rice. This included everything from brown to jasmine, basmati and wild rice. The only variable that changes is how long it should cook. ; ;

    How To Cook Black Rice In The Instant Pot

    Have you heard of black rice? Its healthier than all other rice because rather than being a grain, its actually a seed. Plus, its packed with antioxidants, just like blueberries.

    It looks pretty crazy, but it tastes delicious.

    We default to black rice most of the time unless we have guests who might be scared away. Most of my brands of black rice call for a 2 to 1 ratio of water.

    We started cooking black rice in the Instant Pot with 2 cups water, 1 cup rice, and 20 minutes under low pressure. Weve had success with that method, but have been working our water level down.

    I feel pretty confident that you could use 1 1/2 cups water and 1 cup rice and 20 to 25 minutes under low pressure and have it come out just great.

    How Much Rice Can You Cook In The Instant Pot

    The most rice Ive ever cooked at one time is 3 cups of dry rice with 3 cups of water. I think you could probably go up to 5 cups of dry rice, as long as you dont fill the pot more than halfway full for safety.

    Rice creates foamy, starchy water as it cooks, so you wouldnt want it to rise too high during the cooking cycle and damage your pot.

    When doubling or tripling a recipe in the Instant Pot, the cooking time doesnt change. However, the overall time will be longer when you cook a larger quantity, because it will take longer for the pot to come to pressure when compared to a smaller quantity of rice.

    Rinsing Your Rice Is Key

    How to Make the PERFECT Instant Pot Rice – White Rice, Brown Rice and Wild Rice

    We need to keep in mind the amount of starch that clings to all those uncooked grains of rice and how that affects the way it cooks. By rinsing this starch off we prevent the rice from sticking together as it cooks and allows it to fluff up properly without becoming gummy.

    STRAINER
    • Use a fine mesh strainer and rinse your rice in the sink till the water runs clear. Shake the rice and stir your hand through it in a circular motion.
    BOWL
    • Fill a bowl with your rice and cold water and stir your hand through in a circular motion 30 times. Drain the cloudy water.
    • Repeat this till the water runs clear.

    Why Do Bodybuilders Eat Jasmine Rice

    Brown Rice

    Varieties of brown rice such as Jasmine or Basmati still contain their germ and bran layers, meaning they provide fitness buffs with a range of important nutrients including B vitamins, bone-building phosphorus, and magnesium. Low levels of magnesium may also contribute to or at least predict heart disease.

    Start by peeling and slicing 1-2 inches of ginger . Thinly slice three shittake mushrooms and crush two cloves of garlic. Shittake mushrooms are pretty expensive , but since theyre mostly air and weigh next to nothing, I was able to get three fairly large mushrooms for $0.63. Not bad.

    Remove the skin from about 2 lbs. of bone-in chicken pieces. Dark meat is going to give you a lot better flavor than breasts, so I highly suggest you stick to thighs and drumsticks. You can remove the excess fat as well, but I found that it made the porridge incredibly rich and velvety. Plus, trimming the fat is tedious. Ha.

    Place one cup uncooked jasmine rice in the bottom of the Instant Pot and add the ginger slices, crushed garlic, and sliced mushrooms on top.

    Then add the chicken pieces

    And finally, add 7 cups water.

    If youre making this on the stove top, just add all the ingredients listed above to a large pot, but use 10 cups water instead of 7 . Bring the pot to a boil over high heat, then reduce to low and let simmer for 1-2 hours, stirring often, or until a thick porridge has formed. If the porridge is too thin after that time, simply let it simmer without a lid until it thickens.

    Close and lock the lid on the Instant Pot and turn the steam release valve to the sealing position. Notice the float valve on the right, the small metal circle, is down. This means there is no pressure in the Instant Pot.

    Types Of Wild Rice It Matters

    So, heres what Ive figured out

    The type of wild rice you use REALLY matters. There are so many varieties, and I dont use a variety that can be bought off the shelf at your local supermarket.;I buy it from friends who go out in a canoe and harvest the rice by hand, according to traditional Native practices. I pay $11 per pound for this beautiful, local food.

    Our wild rice is not patty-grown. It is not dark black or brown; more of a grey-ish brown color.

    If your wild rice is patty-grown, black in color, or machine-parched, your results may be different.

    This is my best guess as to why others who have followed this recipe ended up with vastly different results. Just know that as long as the rice is cooked through not too al dente and not mushy, but perfectly cooked and youre still left with water, simply drain the water and use the rice. Its really ok!

    How Much Water For Instant Pot Rice

    You can cook any kind of rice in your pressure cooker, long or short grain, brown or white. No matter what kind of rice Im cooking, I use the same 1:1 ratio of rice to water or broth.

    This is probably less water than youre used to using for cooking stovetop rice, and thats because theres very little evaporation when youre using the pressure cooker. This ratio produces fairly firm, separate grainsyou can add a little more water, maybe about 1/4 cup extra, if you like softer rice.

    What I Do: I sometimes sauté a little garlic in olive oil before adding my rice and broth, which turns a basic pot of grains into a flavorful side dish! You can also use seasonings such as turmeric and coriander for some Indian-inspired basmati rice, or chili powder for rice to tuck into burritos.
