Instant Pot Dal | How to make instant pot dal & rice together

Instant Pot Dal comes together with minimal effort with the help of your electric pressure cooker. These delicious bowls of dal are topped with quick-pickled red onion and tangy yogurt for an unforgettable, vegetarian meal thats perfect for Meatless Monday or any day of the week.

Growing up, my dad was a vegetarian, and I fondly remember eating Indian food with him. One of the first dishes he introduced me to, and my favorite still to this day is dal . The versions of dal that Ive eaten in the past have always been made with lentils green, red, or yellow but I recently came across a recipe on Bon Apetit that used split peas. And, since I had some split peas on hand from this recipe, I decided that I had to try it right away.

I did make a few tweaks to the original recipe, however. Their original recipe called for yellow split peas. I only had the traditional green variety on hand, so I swapped those in. I also adapted the recipe so that it could be made in my Instant Pot I just love how easy, and hands off the Instant Pot makes the process, so youll pretty much find me using it whenever I can.

But my favorite part is that because the Instant Pot makes the cooking process so hands off it leaves you plenty of time to prepare the toppings and rice that youll want when serving up the dal.

To add a bit more tang and creaminess, a swirl of salt and pepper seasoned Greek yogurt gets stirred in at the end too.

How To Make Instant Pot Chicken Curry

I like to call this a dump-and-go recipe. Outside of stirring a few ingredients before layering the chicken, carrots, and onions, you literally place all of the ingredients in the Instant Pot or pressure cooker with the exception of the coconut milk set it to cook and let it do with it does best.

The first ingredients that go into the Instant Pot are the tomatoes, chicken broth, tomato paste, garlic, ginger, curry powder, cumin, and salt. A quick stir makes sure that everything is distributed evenly before the layering starts.

Next the chicken, carrots, and onion are layered into the Instant Pot. Theres no need to stir at this point.

Secure the lid making sure that the vent is closed. Cook for 4 minutes time on high pressure. Once the time is up, make sure to allow the cooker to naturally release the pressure for 10 minutes. This helps to ensure that the meat stays tender and juicy. After 10 minutes are up, you can open the vent to allow the rest of the steam to release.

Remove the lid and choose the sauté function, adding the coconut milk and heat through. You may be temped to add the coconut to make this a complete dump-and-go, but please dont. The high pressure cooking will curdle the coconut milk.

You can add the garnishes directly to the finished dish or let people add them as they prefer. But do make sure to serve the curry with rice basmati is really great or naan bread, or both!

What Is The Pot

Pot-in-Pot or PIP as is commonly refereed is the method of pressure cooking food in a separate bowl thats placed on a steam rack with water in the main pot.

The steam is generated by the water in the main pot which cooks the food placed in the separate bowl above the rack.

The technique is used in making cakes, cheesecakes, lasagna and you can even use it to make rice, quinoa etc.

Another good use of PIP method is to cook multiple dishes at the same time. The idea is to cook things together which take the similar amount of time to cook.

Here are few examples for you guys to understand this better

white basmati rice and toor/moong/masoor dal they can cook together at the same time and you can do PIP with them

brown rice and chana masala/rajma again perfect pairing

You get the idea right?

For this recipe I cooked a basic rice and dal using the pot-in-pot method. Its a super easy meal, hassle free and so comforting!

How To Make Instant Pot Dal & Rice

1. Press the saute button on the Instant pot. By default it is set to 30 mins. Just ignore this. The display will show you as ON when the inner pot turns hot.

Pour oil to the inner steel pot. Add mustard, cumin, red chili and green chilli. When the mustards pop, add curry leaves, ginger and garlic. Saute for a minute.

2. Add chopped tomatoes, salt, turmeric and red chilli powder. Saute for a minute.

3. Then add the rinsed dal and pour water. Deglaze the pot by scraping the bottom with the spatula. This releases any food bits stuck at the bottom.

4. Place a long legged trivet.

5. Place the rice bowl and pour water. Cover the rice bowl with a plate.

6. Press cancel. Secure the Instant pot with the lid. Position the steam release handle to sealing. Press pressure cook or manual button. Set the timer to 9 mins. Use the + or buttons to increase and decrease the timings.

The pot will take time to come to pressure and then cook.

7. When the IP finishes, press cancel. Let the pressure release naturally. The pin drops when the IP is depressurized. Open the lid. Remove the rice bowl carefully.

8. Stir well. Check the consistency and salt. If needed add more salt and lemon juice. If the consistency is too thick then add little water. I prefer to add 1/4 cup hot water at this stage. Sprinkle coriander leaves.

Serve hot rice & dal with some ghee topped over it. We usually eat with some pickle, pappads or salad. I had set aside some curry leaves and red chilli for garnishing.

Instant Pot Everyday Dal And Rice

This recipe for everyday dal calls for a very short list of ingredients and takes minimal effort to make.

So whats in this everyday dal? Just split lentils and water. A little salt and turmeric too. Thats it.

I realize this everyday dal might sound bland BUT, the key to making this dal flavorful is in the tempering. Depending on where youre from, you may call it tadka or chhonk or vaghar. The idea is the same: you sizzle spices in hot oil or ghee. And then you pour that flavorful spiced oil on top of the dal just before serving.

Feel free to switch up the tadka to give this dal some variety, especially if you end up making it often. Try it with sliced garlic or caramelized shallots/onions or curry leaves or with a pinch of hing.
