Yep! Its true! Making homemade dog food can stretch your food dollars even further by making sure not even a stem goes into the garbage or compost. Not to mention, dog food in the Instant Pot is more nutritious because nutrients are exposed to heat for less time!

Mouth Watering Turkey Breast With A Twist

Ok so this recipe isnt technically for dogs, but with some tweaks and adjustments, it can be.

The biggest thing is to leave out all the fancy seasonings and extras. The seasoning is not good for your dog and the onion and garlic can be dangerous.

This is usually in large quantities but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Celery is ok in limited amounts but for an added layer of safety I would leave those out as well.

Once you have cooked the turkey it can be given by itself as a snack or shredded and mixed into brown/white rice.

Be creative but also be sure to not give your dog anything he cant have. See list below.

This recipe is designed to work with whatever natural food waste you have on hand, so feel free to make adjustments based on what’s available.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups of white basmati rice
  • 3 cups of water
  • 3 tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar
  • 3 pounds of ground beef
  • 1 pound of beef livers
  • About 36 ounces of available vegetables
  • 2 and a half cups of banana
  • 6 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 6 tablespoons of ground flaxseed

Instructions

Before you cook, combine the water and vinegar. Let the rice soak in this mixture for a few hours. Then, strain the rice out and set the water aside while you start cooking the meat. You can cook the ground beef and livers with the “Saute” function of the Instant Pot.

You should cook the proteins until they are about halfway finished. Once they reach that sweet spot, add the soaked rice and the remaining water from earlier.

Stir what you currently have in the Instant Pot together before you add the vegetables on top. Don’t mix the vegetables in. Instead, close the pot, seal the vent, and let it cook in the “Manual” mode for about 12 minutes.

Once the timer is up, release the vent. At this point, you can add bananas and coconut oil. The recipe is pretty much done! Just mix everything together until you have a nice fluffy mixture.

Why We Switched To Homemade Dog Food

10 Homemade Dog Food Recipes For Instant Pot

I had been taking pains to feed my family the best organic, local, Real Foods we could afford for years before I switched to homemade dog food. Truthfully, the conviction was there long before I actually did it.

Our Boston terrier/chihuahua mix Betsy is a beloved member of our family. Shes like a third child to my husband and me. We want her with us as long as possible, and we want her to be the healthiest she can be for as long as she lives .

About 2 years ago, we noticed that Betsy was shedding more than usual. She had a loose tooth. And her breath was really stinky. Worst of all, she had fleas for the first time ever!

I took her in to see the vet and the results werent good.

We had a flea-infested, overweight, balding dog with halitosis great.

Heres the thing I was buying a natural, healthy dry food . I truly thought I was feeding Betsy a healthy dog food.

I told our vet that I wanted to make Betsys food from then on, and surprisingly, she was 100% supportive! She said, We love it when pet parents want to go the extra mile for their puppys diet. What you make her at home is so much better for her than the junk in the bag. Lets figure out a good recipe, okay?

Its not just for helping dogs lose weight, its a great option for everyday food.

I put half of the mixture into gallon-sized ziplock bags and store them in the refrigerator.

The other half I place in half-pint jars and store in the refrigerator.

Jeb and Bailey Mae each eat one full jar each day, in addition to their kibble.

I give them half of the jar at lunch and half of the jar at dinner.

I recommend checking with your veterinarian as to how much your dog should be eating each meal.

Please remember that dogs need meat as a first ingredient.

Before you make vegan food for dogs, please discuss with a veterinarian to make sure your dogs health is front and center and will not be put at risk.

Chicken And Brown Rice Stew

Looking for something high in fiber? This stew is a great recipe to try out. The brown rice is much healthier than wheat or other grains. It tastes great, has plenty of great complex carbs, and keeps your pup’s system regular.

This recipe is very easy to make and doesn’t cost a ton of money. Plus, it takes less than half an hour to cook up.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of brown rice
  • 1 cup of shredded spinach
  • 2 and a half cups of water
  • Half a teaspoon of ground egg shells

Instructions

To prepare the ingredients, all you need to do is chop the sweet potato and carrots. The chicken thighs will cook whole in the Instant Pot. This allows you to take some of that flavor from the bones.

Place all of the ingredients into the Instant Pot and cook for 23 minutes in the “Manual” mode. After you have released the pressure and let things cool for a bit, remove all of the chicken bones.

Chicken bones can break up in your dog’s system and cause serious health issues. So, make sure that every piece of bone is taken out.

Break the remaining chunks of chicken apart with a fork and mix everything until it’s fully incorporated. The texture should be light and fluffy. If you want to add coconut oil, do so now.

Let the food cool down to room temperature before you feed your dog.

Absolutely! Fruit has a lot of nutrients that are great for dogs. Just don’t go overboard with it. We often use what is in season or what we have in the freezer. We like to use some kind of berries – strawberries or blueberries are best. Apples are also really good for dogs, just be sure to avoid the seeds.Do NOT use grapes as they are very bad for dogs. You can add fruit before or after cooking, just beware that if you cook with blueberries, your dog food will turn purple.

Raw Food Is It Right For Your Dog

Raw feeding is a more primal type of feeding, where dogs are provided with raw meat, uncooked bones, organs, plus fruits & veggies.

I thought about switching Roxy & Rico to a raw food diet, but Rico is a struggle eater. For a pup that was living on the streets of Puerto Rico, youd think hed eat pretty much anything.

Granted, he was very young when we found him, but man. This boy has been known to spend 15 minutes trying to eat a single goldfish cracker!

Hes an extremely picky, very slow eater. Plus, he has a very high metabolism and if hes fed too little, or he eats dinner too early, he tends to get a bit pukey early the next morning.

Thats why I decided to try cooking meals for them in my Instant Pot. My main goal is to provide the best food possible and try to resolve his tummy issues.

How To Make It

To make homemade dog food, I use my Instant Pot, but you can use any pressure cooker. To make homemade dog food on the stove, you can check out my recipe for homemade dog food on the stove. You can also make this with a crockpot/slow cooker, just cook the meat first on the stove – then combine it all and let it cook on low for a few hours to let the flavors come together.

First, set the Instant Pot to “Saute” and cook the ground meat. Pour off any fat and once cooled, discard it.

Add the drained meat back to the Instant Pot. Dump in the leftover rice and mix well. If you are using barley, quinoa, oats, or sweet potatoes instead of rice, skip to the next step.

Next, add the bone broth and coconut oil. Stir to combine and let the coconut oil melt.

Then, add in the vegetables. I try to use around 24 ounces which would be two 12-ounce bags or one and a half 16-ounce bags. Mix well.

If you are using barley, quinoa, oats, or sweet potatoes instead of rice, add them now and mix to combine everything.

Finally, put the lid on and close the vent so it is set to Sealing. Set your Instant Pot to “Pressure Cook” or “Manual” mode at High Pressure for 7 minutes.

Allow all of the pressure to release naturally, which should take around 5 minutes. If it takes a little longer, thats okay. Then carefully open your Instant Pot pointing the lid away from you so you dont get steamed.

Let the dog food cool completely before serving it or storing it.
