Additional Power Pressure Cooker Xl Buttons:

  • Canning the canning button cooks at 12 psi, which is high pressure in the Instant Pot. If you prefer, you can do all your pressure cooking using the canning button if youre pressure cooking longer than 10 minutes. You can adjust the time to 45 and 120 minutes. The Power Pressure Cooker manual does not recommend pressure canning if you are at an altitude above 2,000 ft. However, a division of the USDA warned consumers against pressure canning in digital pressure cookers. Hot water bath canning is safe.
  • Slow Cook 2 hour cook time, use the cook time selector to adjust to 6 hours or 12 hours. Slow cook cooks between 174-199° F which would be equivalent to low on a traditional slow cooker.
  • Keep Warm/Cancel Button Use this button to cancel a function or turn off your pressure cooker. When you pressure cooking time is up, it will automatically switch to Keep Warm.
  • Delay Timer allows you to set the pressure cooker to start cooking later in the day.

Instant Pot Poultry Setting

The poultry Instant Pot setting is best for cookingyou guessed itchicken! The mode you choose depends on the size of the chicken pieces and the cut as chicken breast needs less cooking time and is easily overcooked compared to chicken thighs. You can use this setting to cook chicken meat or a dish that contains poultry in it such as chicken and potatoes or chicken and rice . Poultry setting is only available on 6-quart and 8-quart models, not on the mini! Below is how to use the Poultry setting on Instant Pot.

  • Turn the Instant Pot on, it will say OFF to indicate the Stand-By mode. Add chicken, seasoning and liquids to the pot. Secure and lock the lid. Press the Poultry button. The default setting is pre-programmed to set the pot to cook at HIGH pressure for 15 minutes, which is suitable for larger pieces of chicken. If you press the Poultry button again, you can adjust the mode from Normal to Less or More .

If desired, use the / + buttons to further customize the time. The cooking time may be adjusted at any time during pressure cooking.

COOKING TIPS

Allow poultry to rest for 5-10 minutes, depending on size. It will reabsorb cooking juices for tender, succulent meat. Essentially, what this means is that you should allow the Instant Pot to release pressure naturally when possible.

1. Manual or Pressure Cook Button

This is the mode you will use most frequently on your Instant Pot . This is the main button to pressure cook any dish. Most recipes you will find online use the Pressure Cook button.

Press “Pressure Cook” button, then “+” or “-” to set the time to pressure cook. The maximum time you can pressure cook is 240 minutes.

Note: In old versions and models, the button was called Manual and in newer models it is rightly called “Pressure Cook”.

2. Pressure Level Button

This button is to switch between high and low pressure cooking. Press “Pressure Cook” button, then “Pressure Level” to switch.

3. “+” and “-” Buttons

These buttons are used to increase or decrease the cooking time.

4. Sauté Button

This is the mode to Sauté or brown food in the Instant Pot . Sauté with the lid open or with a glass lid. This is one of the main advantages of the instant pot, that you can sauté and cook directly in the same pot. This is the second most frequently used mode.

Sauté mode defaults to 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, the mode is canceled.

I use this mode in my Carrot Pudding recipe, and it makes cooking the pudding so much easier without much monitoring.

Press this button to cancel the operation and switch off the Instant Pot.

When the instant pot goes in “Keep Warm” mode, the display shows L0:00 and starts counting up.

Using Frozen Ground Beef

If you forgot to thaw your ground beef, the good news is that you can cook your beef straight from frozen! The cooking instructions from frozen are fairly simple. To cook the frozen ground beef, skip the saute step in the cooking instructions and simply pressure cook for 12 minutes. Once the pressure cook has completed, do a natural pressure release and youre done!

How To Saut Meat Without Burning It

The very first thing you need to do is heat your Instant Pot. Before you put ANYTHING in it.

Not even the oil.

Once its had a chance to heat up, then you add the oil. Give the oil a few seconds to come up to temp, then add the meat.

See, the thing is, if you have a hot pan and cold oil, the food wont stick!

After you put your meat in, you need to wait until its seared before you flip it.

If it sticks to the pan, its not ready.

Youll want to leave the meat alone until it forms a crust and releases from the pan.

***Another quick tip: a good flat ended wooden turner is indispensable when it comes to searing meat in the Instant Pot!

To sauté meat without burning it, sauté your Instant Pot until it says hot, then add your oil and place the meat in the pot.

After a few minutes, youll turn the meat over using the wooden spatula and continue searing the other side.

When its done, you can add a little water or stock to the pot. The steam will loosen any food that is stuck to the pan.

Finally, you can use the spatula to scrape all the meat bits off the bottom of the pot!

Its as simple as that to sauté delicious Instant Pot Meat!

How To Brown Chicken In Instant Pot Without Sticking Including Step

After much trial and error as well as research, Ive arrived at a solution. I cannot lie, it was a bitch getting here, but my pain is your gain! Follow these steps to not not only avoid effing up your chicken, but actually maximizing flavor in whatever chicken dish youre making.

Step 1: Heat the pan FIRST using More saute setting

Step 2: Add the oil ONLY AFTER POT HAS REACHED DESIRED TEMP LEVEL and make sure the entire pans surface is covered with a thin coating

Step 3: Allow the oil to heat properly before adding the meat. YOU WANT HOT OIL FIRST!

Step 4: Add the chicken to the outer areas where the oil collects and cook skin side down

After 4 minutes of cooking on “Hot” setting the chicken should release easily

Step 5: WAIT. WAIT SOME MORE before flipping. Any sticking means chicken aint ready for the FLIP. You can use your tongs to test for release. Cook for about 2 minutes.

Notice skin is still intact and has a nice color to it

We Love The Instant Pot For Slow Cooking And Pressure Cooking But What About That Saute Button Our Test Kitchen Tries It Out

When it comes to the Instant Pot, its one of our favorite new kitchen gadgets . To combine the powers of a slow cooker and pressure cooker in one appliance is absolute genius! But I have to admit, I wonder about all those other functions, but most especially the saute option since it seems to be so useful . To find out if the Instant Pot can hold its own when it comes to sautéing, I checked in with our Test Kitchen to get the skinny.

So how does it work?

Looking at the Instant Pot, I understand that its built perfectly for slow cooking, pressure cooking, making rice and even making yogurt, but how could a deep pot like that possibly work that well for sauteing veggies and meats?

Well, it turns out the Instant Pot does a great job at sauteing your ingredients. Test Kitchen food stylist Shannon Roum showed me that all there is to getting this multitasking appliance ready to saute is to select that button on the machine as well as your desired temperature . After coming to temperature, Shannon placed a few chicken thighs skin side down in the bottom of the pot, and after a few minutes, the chicken had a great sear and nice crispy skin. When browning or sautéing you likely will be using different types of food. You may be sautéing vegetables for to go with your rice, or you could be browning a roast to make a stew.

Because foods cook differently at different temperatures, Instant Pot gives you the ability to select one of three different temperature for sautéing and browning.

The Instant Pot pressure cookers offer three different options with its sautéing and browning function

  • Normal which is for regular browning at 320° F.
  • More which is for darker browning at 338°F.
  • Less which is for lighter browning at 221°F.
  • When using the sauté function the lid must be left open at all times. This prevents it from pressurizing while cooking.

    You will need to add a small amount of oil to the pot. Some users have found that they may need to add more oil to coat the bottom of the pot because it isnt completely flat.

    After selecting which of the three temperatures you would like to use, the pot will warm up and it will display Hot on the display screen to let you know it has reached the proper temperature.

    For best results you should wait until the desired temperature has been reached before adding your food. This will prevent over cooking and will also help getting that perfect crispy brown exterior, rather than letting your food get soggy from sitting in oil.

    Instant Pot Slow Cook Setting

    The Slow Cook is a non-pressure cooking setting that is compatible for use with any common slow cooker/Crockpot recipe. The pot is heated but is not pressurized and the Less, Normal and More modes correspond to Low, Medium and High slow cooker settings but you will need to adjust the time manually.

    You might want to use this setting for making dishes ahead of time while youre away from home or overnight. There are times when slow-cooking might work better for certain recipes than quicker pressure cooking. Below are the steps for how to use the Slow Cook setting on Instant Pot.
