How To Choose Greens

Instant Pot 15 Bean Soup with Pork and Ham | Hurst’s HamBeens

Always look for leaves that are bright green, have no bruising, and dont look wilted. You want the freshest produce for better results.

Depending on how much you need to cook, cleaning and prepping the leaves can be time consuming. There are convenient options now to skip a few prep steps! Look for precut and precleaned collard greens, usually found in the produce aisle in large sealed bags.

Bean Soup Instant Pot

  • Dry bean mix makes things easier and cheaper vs. buying multiple types and just using some of each.
  • You could make it as a ham hock recipe, just throw that in the center and cut meat off at the end
  • I like to use chicken or homemade beef broth or water could be used, but it wont have as much flavor.
  • Onion I use in almost everything because it is a really cheap way to add a lot of flavor and texture to a dish.
  • Garlic of course I buy and use in bulk
  • Seasonings like thyme, salt and pepper etc.. should be used sparingly at the beginning
  • I dont add a lot of this if Im adding ham since that has enough natural salts in it

Honestly, it never fails that whomever youre making this far, theyre certain to add their own salt and pepper to taste once they fill their own bowl. Dont take offense and just remember that everyones tastes and preferences vary.

Ive been guilty of even adding in a seasoning packet or two to see how much of those unique flavors get soaked up by the beans.

This 15 bean soup mix isnt hard to make at all which is probably why its one of my family-favorite soups to make.

Why Dont You Add All The Ingredients At Once

Its important to add the ingredients in the order specified in the recipe for optimal cooking.

I opted not to add the tomatoes with the initial soak because it increases the cook time needed for tender beans. Hurst recommends adding tomatoes after the beans are tender.

In addition, I love the pop of color the carrots give to the soup, but theyd be mushy if you added them too soon. Adding the spinach after pressure cooking wilts the spinach, but adds a nice fresh green color.

Adding the lemon juice at the very end enhances the flavor of the beans and adds a little brightness to the soup. If you wanted, you could also add the spice packet with the lemon juice.

How To Make 15 Bean Soup

Clearly we making this one in an electric pressure cooker, so pull it out and dust it off.

  • Use the saute function of your pressure cooker or Instant Pot to saute the veggies until they start to soften. Sweating them release excess water and leaves behind little flavor bombs.
  • Add the dry bean mix along with the rest of the ingredients up to tomatoes. Do not add the tomatoes and protein here- this is too long of a cook time and they will literally disintegrate.
  • Cook on manual high pressure for 45 minutes and then give it a quick release. Most folks use a natural release, but I found that cooking longer on the front end resulted in more tender beans and less sticking to the bottom of the pot.
  • Add the tomatoes and cooked meat and set to keep warm for 10 minutes so they can heat through.
  • Before serving, stir in the apple cider vinegar and taste for salt and pepper.
  • Serve immediately with sour cream, plain Greek yogurt or cheese and crackers.

    How To Make It:

Saute the vegetables and aromatics. First, youll heat the oil using the Saute function of the Instant Pot. Add the celery and onions and saute until the onions become translucent.

Next, youll add the carrots and garlic, then stir and cancel the saute function.

Add the beans. Next, youll rinse and sort the beans and add them to the pot. No soaking is necessary. Then, youll add the water, tomato paste, contents of the seasoning packet, chili powder, paprika, and bay leaf.

Stir to combine. Add the ham bone, submerging as much of it as possible, and seal the Instant Pot.

Cook the beans. Last, youll cook at high pressure for 60 minutes, followed by a 15 minutes natural pressure release.

Remove the bay leaf and the ham bone. Pull the meat off the bones and return to the soup. Stir in the apple cider vinegar and season with salt and pepper, if needed.

Youll love the smoky flavor of this hearty and delicious soup!

How To Cook Beans At Altitude In An Instant Pot / Pressure Cooker

Beans are one of the things that you will need to add more pressure cooking time if you are cooking at altitude.

The technical rule is to add 5 percent more pressure cook time at 3,000 feet above sea level, 10 percent for 4,000 feet above sea level, and so on, increasing by 5 percent every additional 1,000 feet.

For this recipe, if you live at altitude, I would increase the quick soak cook time to 2 minutes. After the beans have soaked for an hour and youve added the other ingredients, increase the second pressure cook time by a minute or more depending on your altitude.

Instant Pot 15 Bean Soup With Bear Ham Recipe

High-tech pressure cookers like the Instant Pot reduce the cooking time for dried beans to under an hour.

Its hard to beat a big bowl of bean soup. Add a slice of cornbread and you have a meal fit for royalty. Want to kick the flavor up even more? Add a few chunks of cured bear ham.

But cooking dried beans from scratch used to take forever. Soaking the beans, all-day simmers, bean soup used to be a weekend only affair.

Enter the Instant Pot or any of the other high-tech pressure cookers on the market today. Even starting with dried beans, you can have dinner on the table in under an hour.

While most of the Instant Pot recipes you see call for cooking the beans for 15-20 minutes, I like to go a bit longer at 24. Let the pressure come down on its own, it should take another 15 to 20 minutes.

Don’t have a bear ham? Just substitute a regular ham and it will still be great.

    Bean Soup Recipe Tips

    • You can saute the veggies before for a couple minutes before adding the other ingredients, if preferred, but its not necessary for the best flavor.
    • If you dont want to include the seasoning packet, youll want to add more spices for flavoring, such as salt, pepper, etc.
    • If you like your food a little saltier, add about ½ teaspoon to the mix.
    • Using cooked ham is the key here. Great for leftover ham or the cooked, cubed ham you can buy at the store. You dont want to cook the ham the entire time as its already cooked, so it will get tough. Youre just wanting to warm up the ham, which is why you have it sit in the hot liquid for a couple of minutes before serving. It makes it the perfect temperature.
    • The soup only cooks for a total of 40 minutes, but youll need extra time for it to pressurize and to saute the onions. This is why the full cooking time is an hour.

    Ninja Foodi 15 Bean Soup

Hearty " 15 Bean Soup" Recipe

I was amazed too the very first time that I made this soup because every bean literally had its own flavor, texture, and taste. You can make it in a Crockpot Express pot or as an easy Ninja foodi recipe like we do. Any pressure cooker will do yall, they are all basically the same with high pressure.

If youre worried about the time its going to take to cook up your beans, you can plan on the maximum time being 45 minutes or so. You could use canned as well which would cut it down to 10 if youd rather but if you havent been cooking dry beans in Instant Pot yet it is WAY easier than youd think.

Lets start with a few basic tips:

    • Make sure to Bookmark our InstaPot recipes page. We add new ones each week!
    • Then PRINT this > Instant Pot cooking times cheat sheet that will help you understand how long meat, vegetables and beans take to cook in your pressure cooker.

For reference, this is the pressure cooker I have and use for all recipe creations.

Quick Soak Or No Soak Recipe Options

My recipe uses a Quick Soak method that eliminates the overnight soak. I like the Quick Soak method because I get fewer split beans than if I pressure cook the beans without soaking.

To use the Quick Soak pressure cooker method, you set the cook time for 1 minute at High Pressure. Once the cook time ends, use a natural pressure release and let the beans soak for 1 hour without removing the pressure cooking lid.

After the 1 hour soak, remove the lid and add the tomatoes, carrots, and seasoning packet. Return the lid and set the cook time for 3 minutes.

After the 3 minute cook time, youll use a natural pressure release for at least 10 minutes to allow the soup to stop boiling. (This trick allows you to open the pressure cooker without liquid coming up through the steam release valve.

No Soak Method for 15 Bean Soup: If you dont have time to soak your beans for an hour, you can pressure cook the beans at high pressure for 35 minutes, do a 10-minute natural pressure release, then add the other ingredients and proceed with the recipe as written.

Overnight Soak Method: if you used a traditional overnight or all day soak method, you can skip to step 6 in the recipe.

Instant Pot Bean Soup No Soak

    • Anytime I can take a recipe thats loaded down with healthy beans and ingredients and get the kids to eat it as well, Im counting that as dinnertime win.

I also like to add in some diced tomatoes and a ham bone or leftover ham from the night before to make the flavors and texture even more hearty than it already is.

My favorite brand of beans to use is Hurst Beans as they just do really really well when theyre cooked up in the Instant Pot.

How To Cook Instant Pot 15 Bean Soup In The Instant Pot / Electric Pressure Cooker

This Instant Pot 15 Bean Soup recipe will work in any brand of electric pressure cooker, including the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi, or Mealthy MultiPot.

Youll save time making 15 Bean Soup in the pressure cooker! The pressure cooker takes about one-third of the time it would take to cook beans on the stove.

The high-quality Hurst HamBeen 15 bean soup mix is a blend of fifteen bean varieties: northern, pinto, large lima, yelloweye, garbanzo, baby lima, green split, kidney, cranberry, small white, pink, small red, yellow split, lentil, navy, white kidney, black bean. The blend is great for soup because some of the beans breakdown while theyre cooking, easily creating a thick, delicious soup.

Canning beans changes the taste and texture of beans. Plus, it costs significantly less to cook dry beans than to use canned beans. You also control how much salt you use.

Not only is pressure cooking the easiest and fastest way to cook dry beans, but the pressure cooked beans taste better, too!
