How Long To Cook Wild Rice

With a conventional pan or rice cooker, wild rice can take upwards of 60 minutes to cook. With an Instant Pot, you can do it in almost half the time: cook on High for 20 minutes, then let it release naturally for an additional 15.

If you prefer a softer or firmer rice, you can cook between 15-25 minutes.

How Long Does It Take To Cook Wild Rice In Pressure Cooker

From start to finish, it takes around 35 minutes to cook wild rice in a pressure cooker. Below is the breakdown:

    • ~5 minutes for the instant pot come to full pressure
    • 20 minutes to cook the wild rice
    • ~10 minutes for natural release.

If you decide to double the recipe, meaning use 2 cups of wild rice and 2 cups of water, the timing should still be the same. However, if you wish to cook more than that, you might have to add a couple of minutes to the cooking time.

Also, I recommend using water that is at room temperature to shorten the amount of time for the instant pot to come to full pressure.

Instant Pot Wild Rice Soup: Frequently Asked Questions

Bah! Im short on time, but I really want to make this.

If youre short on time, 30 minutes should do the trick as well!

Can I sub a different kind of rice or a wild rice blend?

Not really, no. Please use actual wild rice! I know its on the expensive side, and hard to find, and Im normally all about the substitutions, but in this case, it is not the same. Dont use brown rice, dont use white rice, and dont use a wild rice blend, which is just white or brown rice with a few flecks of wild rice. Use straight WILD RICE.

Can I add chicken to this?

Yep! Chicken can be added just pop it in the instant pot with everything else and shred it when its done.

What does poultry seasoning consist of?

Poultry seasoning is usually a mix of thyme, sage, garlic, onion, etc. I used a chicken grilling spice in one of my test batches and it tasted great. Anything with those earthy spices thyme, sage, maybe even rosemary will work nicely.

    What Is Wild Rice

    Instant Pot Wild Rice

The funny part is that wild rice is not actually rice. It is aquatic grass that looks and cooks like rice. It is an edible grain found mainly in North America, India, and China. It is usually harvested only in North America.

Most nutritionists say that it is healthier and has more dietary fiber than other kinds of rice. It is protein-rich, with vitamin B, minerals and is low in fat. Wild rice has 30 times more antioxidants than the normal rice variety and is gluten-free.

Apart from being very healthy, this Instant Pot wild rice has roasted nutty and earthy flavor that is hard to miss. It can be compared to quinoa and amaranth, which are actually seeds, not grains.

    How To Freeze Wild Rice

You can actually freeze wild rice. This is very simple. I usually make a double or triple batch and serve on that night and then freeze the other portions for another day.

To freeze, let the rice cool to room temperature, then place into a freezer bag, smooth up the bag, and then place into the freezer. This rice will last between 4 to 5 months.

To use, take the frozen wild rice out of the freezer, and put it into the refrigerator overnight to thaw. Then heat as directed as stated above.

Types Of Wild Rice It Matters

So, heres what Ive figured out

The type of wild rice you use REALLY matters. There are so many varieties, and I dont use a variety that can be bought off the shelf at your local supermarket. I buy it from friends who go out in a canoe and harvest the rice by hand, according to traditional Native practices. I pay $11 per pound for this beautiful, local food.

Our wild rice is not patty-grown. It is not dark black or brown more of a grey-ish brown color.

If your wild rice is patty-grown, black in color, or machine-parched, your results may be different.

This is my best guess as to why others who have followed this recipe ended up with vastly different results. Just know that as long as the rice is cooked through not too al dente and not mushy, but perfectly cooked and youre still left with water, simply drain the water and use the rice. Its really ok!

What Is The Difference Between White Rice And Rice Pilaf

You might notice looking at the pictures that there is quite a visual difference between the two. This is because while theyre both rice, theyre actually cooked quite differently. They also taste very different, too.

White rice is typically very bland and often boiled. Its used mainly as an accompaniment to other dishes or some people eat it with butter and salt.

Rice pilaf is a rice that is cooked with oils, seasonings, and sometimes added in veggies and other food items so the end taste and look is very, very different than white rice.

Does Wild Rice Need To Be Soaked

Rather than relying on mixed messages, I went with a different approach: I asked my friend Kaare, from Finnskogen Farm. Kaare and his wife Pam have been studying and harvesting wild rice for years and years.

And, not only does Kaare know his wild rice, he also knows nourishing food and Ojibwe culture. He says phytic acid is not an issue in wild rice, and to his knowledge, Native people did not utilize any sort of soaking methods to improve digestibility or reduce phytates.

I can also say, from years of eating it, that consuming unsoaked wild rice has never caused any sort of digestive discomfort or reaction for me or any of my family.

Remember: wild rice is an aquatic grass not a grain like wheat or oats or rye. For this reason, I assume its just fine to eat without soaking first. If anyone has evidence or knowledge to the contrary, please share it with us in the comments!

The warm scent of Lundberg Wild Blend Rice cooking tells me that fall is here.

The reason Wild Blend Rices aroma makes me happy is because it is time to bake Turkey Stuffing Bread. Yes, Turkey Stuffing Bread is used to make Turkey Stuffing at Thanksgiving. And just as deliciously, it is toasted for breakfast every morning from September to December.

Wild Blend Rice contains two kinds of brown rice, wild rice, whole grain Wehani® rice, and whole grain Black Japonica rice.

So Wild Blend Rice is mostly whole grain rices plus wild rice. In fact wild rice is not really rice but a grain harvested from several types of grasses, and its Minnesotas State Grain. I am sorry to say that North Carolina has no State Grain.

Since Wild Blend Rice is an important ingredient in Turkey Stuffing Bread, our freezer holds packets of cooked rice ready to add to the bread. Wild Blend Rice does take a while to cook so we began cooking Wild Blend Rice in the Instant Pot. After consulting various websites and doing our own research, we settled on these directions.

For cooking Wild Blend Rice and other rices, polenta, or anything sticky, the person in our family who washes pots and pans is a big fan of the nonstick inner pot manufactured by Instant Pot. It can be used under pressure just like the original metal pot.

You can increase the amount of rice up to 4 cups. For each cup of rice, use one cup of water. The cooking time stays the same.

    Fluff the rice and serve.
