How to Cook Ground Beef in the Instant Pot – Perfect for Beginners!

Since some of my kids dont like sauce on the broccoli, I generally keep the broccoli separate from the sauce. When I dish up, Ill layer the rice and steamed broccoli, and spoon the meat and sauce over the top.

Use an instant-read thermometer to verify your beef is at least 145°F in the thickest part after cooking. If reheating, make sure your beef is done to 165°F.

Keeping things separate works great for freezing or reheating the leftovers, since the meat and broccoli have very different reheat times.

Smart Program Pressure Cooking

If you choose to use one of the pre-set smart program options, the steps are even simpler. Please refer to our post on Smart Program Instant Pot Buttons Explained for how to adjust each setting.

Step 1. Start the Instant Pot. Insert the inner pot into the cooker base.

Step 2. Add ingredients and liquids to the inner pot. Stir if needed or leave layered.

Step 3. Secure and lock the lid. Make sure everything feels well sealed.

Step 4. Select one of the Smart Program buttons. Pre-set cooking time and pressure level will display. You can leave it as is or adjust things like the pressure level from HIGH to LOW. You can press the Smart Program button again to cycle through the Less, Normal and More time options or use the and + buttons to adjust the cooking time further. If you make any adjustments to the selected Smart Program, they will be remembered next time you use it.

Step 5. Preheating & pressurizing stage begins followed by cooking under pressure as per program settings. Once the Instant Pot beeps again and the timer has reached zero, the cooking process is done.

Step 6. You can do a quick release or allow the built-up pressure to release naturally , or do both depending on the food/recipe.

Step 10. Once pressure is released, open the lid and stir or remove the contents.

Easy Instant Pot Beef Stew Recipe

by Cara | Aug 27, 2017 | Do it yourself and save, GAPS Diet, Main Dish |

Six months later, I still am completely in love with my Instant Pot . One of my favorite things right now to do with it is cook meat on the bottom of the Instant Pot, then put the steamer rack in, and cook rice in a small bowl on top of the rack. Rice is forgiving in the Instant Pot and so it means that all of dinner is ready at exactly the same time, with minimal cleanup or prep. And no boiling over pots of rice on the stove. Ahem.

The rice steams and is completely separate than the chicken, which gives unique flavors, textures, and color rather than being all mixed together. The rice stays fluffy and the chicken cooks beautifully. It also cooks everything at once, with the set-it-and-forget-it ease of the Instant Pot.

How To Cook Beef In A Pressure Cooker/instant Pot

Your pressure cooker, multi-cooker or Instant Pot® is a quick and easy tool for preparing your best beef recipes. Sear, braise, stew, roast or stir-fry in minutes. Versatility is the name of the pressure cooker game.

Best Cuts for Your Pressure Cooker/Instant Pot You can cook any cut in a multi-cooker, but we recommend those from the chuck and round. These beef cuts typically take hours to prepare using braising and roasting methods. The multi-cooker allows you to make your favorite pot roast, beef stew or one-pot meal in much less time. And its great for recipes that require browning beef first, then combining with other ingredients.

Cooking Beef in a Pressure Cooker/Instant Pot

The Pressure Cooker/Instant Pot uses a pressure-cooking technique, which breaks down tougher cuts of beef more quickly than traditional braising. It is self-contained, so you can sear and cook the beef in the same vessel. The Pressure Cooker/Instant Pot also gives you the option to cook food or keep it warm . This feature allows you to tend to other tasks while the appliance does the work.

    Can I Use Frozen Beef

How to Cook Frozen Meat in the Instant Pot

You might be wondering if you can use frozen beef for pot roast. Technically, the answer is yes, the cook time will just be longer .

That said, for the best results, we highly recommend following our method which calls for thawed beef thats seasoned with salt and been left on the counter long enough to take the chill off. This extra time creates the most flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth pot roast. Using thawed beef also allows us to brown the outside of the meat before braising it, which adds a lot of extra flavor to dish.

How To Fix A Tough Pot Roast

To avoid a tough pot roast from the get-go:

    • Make sure you are using good quality meat
    • Look for a roast with even marbling of fat throughout
    • Cook for an appropriate amount of time

If you end up with a tough roast, there are a few things you can do to help it

    • Cut it against the grain and put it back into the pot juices to soak up some moisture
    • Pressure cook it for another 10 15 minutes
    • Put chunks into a food processor and pulse to shred it. This works good if youre using it for quesadillas, enchiladas, etc

My Pressure Cooker Pot Roast Was Tough Why Did That Happen

There are a couple of reasons for your Instant Pot pot roast not cooking as expected so Ill run through the most common issues below:

  • Wrong cut of meat I highly recommend using a chuck roast for this recipe, or if you cant find a chuck roast use another cut of beef that is suitable for slow cooking and has some fat marbling. Leaner cuts of meat will tend to be tougher cooked like this and in the end may be tough no matter how long you cook them for.
  • Needs a longer cook time The cook time largely depends on the thickness of the meat rather than just the weight so if you have a chuck roast that is thicker than about 1.5- 2 inches, or is thicker at one end of the cut of meat than the other, then you may need to add more cooking time. If you find its not tender at the end of the cook time in my recipe, simply put the lid back on and add another five to ten minutes cook time and see how that works.
  • You didnt use natural pressure release if you open the steam release valve as soon as the pressure cooker beeps at the end of the cook time then youll risk ending up with dry inedible meat. This recipe is best if you use a natural pressure release, that simply means waiting about ten minutes or so after cooking until the unit has cooled down enough for most of the pressure to drop. Then you can carefully open the valve to release any remaining pressure and take off the lid.
  • Can I Pressure Cook More Than One Pot Roast At A Time

Yes! I have a 6qt machine and Ive frequently cooked two pot roasts in one go. The trick is to not lay them on the bottom like Ive done in this recipe, if you put them one on top of the other like that they may take much longer to cook. What I do is simply stand them up sideways on opposite sides of the pot, the cook time then is exactly the same as it would be for one pot roast, win win!

What Is The Best Cut Of Beef For Pot Roast

There are so many cuts of meat and it can be confusing to pick a cut for a roast beef dinner, BUT for Pot Roast it doesnt matter much since you are not going to serve it medium-rare. Less expensive cuts like Chuck Roast or Bottom Roast work well because they have more fat in them and since we are pressurizing this roast, the fats will melt off creating a wonderful gravy. Leaner Cuts like Top-Eye would also work. Again, dont worry too much about the cut.

Pot roast is more of a method than a specific cut of meat. To make it, sear a large cut of beef until browned on all sides, and then cook it with aromatics like herbs, onions, carrots, and broth until its melt-in-your-mouth tender.

You can make this in a Dutch oven on the stove-top, in the oven, in a slow cooker, and in a pressure cooker. In this recipe, we are using a pressure cooker to make the pot roast. A pressure cooker takes the cook time down dramatically.

    • 1 tablespoon minced ginger root
