What To Do When The Instant Pot Switches Off Automatically
If the timer has gone off and then the instant pot has shut down, wait for a few minutes.
Disconnect the cord from the main socket and after the pressure is released, open the lid of the pot.
If the instant pot has switched off automatically during cooking, check the reasons above and correct them before switching your pot back on.
If the instant pot has automatically switched off after a prolonged keep warm, it would have automatically released the inside pressure. Open the lid and enjoy your food.
What Is An Instant Pot And How Does It Work
The original Instant Pot is a multicooker that combines the functions of a pressure cooker and a slow cooker. This appliance that is also the name of the brand has become widely popular in recent years.
And while the brand is best known for the various models of instant pots it makes, it also produces other appliances, including toaster ovens, slow cookers, air fryers, and other home appliances.
The instant pot itself has many models: Instant Pot Duo, Instant Pot Dup Plus, Instant Pot Ultra, Instant Pot Wifi, Instant Pot Lux, and much more!
All these instant pot models are programmable pressure cookers that perform more than six functions.
You can buy an 8-in-1 and even a 10-in-1 multi-use instant pot if you are looking for a real helper in the kitchen.
But the six main cooking modes of an instant pot include cooking on High Pressure with the valve open or closed, on Low Pressure with the valve open or closed, slow cooking, and searing.
So, if you have been wondering what the differences between an instant pot, a pressure cooker, and a slow cooker are, know that the former does everything the other two appliances do.
But how does an instant pot work? It is a sealed environment for the food to cook in. You put whatever ingredient you need to cook, add in some liquid, and seal the instant pot.
The liquid inside starts to boil and release steam, creating pressure in the pot. It is the pressure in the pot that makes the food cook faster.
Loose Sealing In The Lid
The silicone sealing ring inside the lid becomes loose over time. You need to replace it as soon as you notice it turning loose.
A good seal prevents pressure release. Without the seal fitting properly, a high amount of pressure can be built up resulting in an explosion.
Make sure your sealing ring is in fine shape. A good rule to follow is to change it every six months.

Instant Pot Falsely Advertised Safety Features
The plaintiff seeks to hold the Instant Pot manufacturer liable for her childs injuries. She states that the company advertised its product as being equipped with 11 safety mechanisms, including a safety lid lock. Yet the lock didnt work as expected.
Instant Pot claims on its website that when the pot is pressurized, the lid will automatically lock to prevent opening the cooker. It also states that if the lid is not in a safe position for pressure cooking, the cooker will not allow cooking to begin. The Instant Pot manual contains similar verbiage, stating that once pressurized, the lid will lock.
Instant Pot also used media outlets to advertise its cooker. In one YouTube video, the spokesperson states that users dont have to be afraid of the device because of its safety features. With 10 safety features built-in, you can use your Instant Pot with confidence, knowing that it is not going to explode, the video states.
In another similar video, a spokesperson boasts about the products safety, stating that once the lid is locked and the contents under pressure, there is no way to open the pressure cooker.
What Makes An Instant Pot Dangerous
Two incidences recently in the United States made many feel unsafe about their instant pots.
Due to the explosion, he suffered severe thermal burns. He opened the lid, unaware that the cooker is still under pressure.
This caused scalding as hot liquid and steam projected out from the appliance.
According to the lawyer, it was a defective instant pot piece that allowed Mr. Riggs to open the lid while still being under pressure inside.
The same thing happened in the other case where Ms. Durhams instant pot exploded causing severe burn injuries to her.
According to Ms. Durhams, the seller marketed the instant pot as having safety mechanisms that prevent the opening of the lid until all pressure has been released.
But in her case, the pot allowed her to remove the lid while still having pressure inside. As a result, hot steam and liquid came out causing burns.
The danger lies in its pressure cooker feature. However, pressure cooking has been around for ages. If we follow the manual instructions carefully, it becomes quite safe to use.
Another important aspect is not to overfill the instant pot. There should be a sufficient gap so the steam gets space to escape out.
The last important part is to not leave it alone while in use. Also, do not forget to switch it off before leaving your home.

Release The Pressure Before Opening The Lid
The lid and the contents inside are under pressure while the Instant Pot is cooking.
If you try and open the lid before you have released the pressure, that pressure will come out quickly and dangerously, like when you accidentally pop a balloon.
Never try and pry, force, or otherwise open the lid until the Instant Pot is done and you have released the pressure with the steam valve.
Extreme Temperature And Power Protection
If everything above fails to work then your instant pot has got one fuse that automatically disconnects the power once the pot reaches the temperature range that is between 336 degrees Fahrenheit to 341.6 degrees Fahrenheit. It also disconnects if a high level of electrical current is being used by the instant pot.

Instant pots are electric pressure cookers that serve as multipurpose pots. The programmable functions allow us to make food quickly.

Not Cleaning Or Inspecting The Instant Pot Regularly
Instant pots come with in-built, anti-block shields to prevent food particles from blocking the steam release valve. However, the anti-block shields arent 100% effective, and tiny food particles can clog the steam release valve.
Clogged steam release valves can affect how your instant pot regulates pressure and, in rare circumstances, cause an explosion.
The instant pot manual advises users to ensure that the appliance is clean and free of built-up debris before cooking. You should also check the sealing ring and inner pot for signs of cracks or damage before you start preparing food in the instant pot.

That doesnt mean it doesnt happen. It just means that if you follow the manufacturers instructions, you should be safe.

Tip #: Check Equipment Before Cooking
Before you turn on the pressure cooker, check the equipment. Always check the rubber gasket before you turn it on. The rubber gasket should have no cracks around it nor should it be worn out. Some brands advise you to change the rubber gasket once per year.
How often you should replace it depends on how frequently you use it. You might keep an extra rubber gasket on hand to replace it easily if you discover a ripped or faulty gasket. Dont leave dried food around the rim. It can break the gasket.

The Worst Foods That Can Sputter And Clog Your Instant Pot Release Valve
Be especially aware of things that sputter when they cook as they can clog the release valve on the inside of the lid.
Im not saying dont use them, but definitely, dont overfill the Instant Pot when using them. And ideally, make sure youre using an Instant Pot recipe that calls for those ingredients (and that the recipe has good reviews.
Foods that tend to sputter a lot when cooking include:
- Pearled Barley
I took a look at some well-rated recipes that call for some of those and I did see a few helpful tips to reduce foaming and sputtering which could clog your release valve.
Those tips include:
- Add a little oil or butter to the cooking liquid which reduces foaming
- Use the natural pressure release method rather than the quick method
- Spray a little oil on the inside of the lid including the valve
I will say, I saw a lot of recipes for these foods, so dont shy away from them with your Instant Pot. Just use precautions and especially avoid overfilling the inner pot.

What Causes A Pressure Cooker Explosion
A pressure cooker is basically a big pot with a sealed, lockable lid and a valve that controls steam pressure inside of the pot. As heat increases, pressure increases inside of the pot. As Modernist Cuisine describes, the high-pressure steam:
- Raises the boiling point of water in the pot which, in turn, allows food to cook faster
- Forces liquid into the food, allowing it to remain tender.
The lid on an electrical pressure cooker should stay shut until the pressure inside has reached a safe enough level. However, in some cases, the lid may prematurely come off, or it may unlock before the pressure level is safe. In some cases, a defective valve may fail to release pressure. The explosion that follows can cause devastating harm to anyone near the pressure cooker. It can also damage kitchen property.
