First, add the steel cut oats and the water to the Instant Pot.

Place the lid on the Instant Pot and lock. Then press the Porridge button and set to 6 minutes. Turn the knob on the top of the lid to Sealing .

The Instant Pot will turn on and start to build pressure. After about 10 minutes, the timer will automatically set to 6 minutes.

When the 6 minutes are done, it will need to sit for an additional 8-10 minutes to release the pressure .

After the the pressure is released, remove the lid. .

Stir and add the oatmeal to a bowl, and add toppings of choice . Store this oatmeal in an airtight container in the fridge for 5-6 days. Note: the oatmeal will thicken more as is sits.;

Steel cut oats are a less processed version of rolled, quick, or instant oats. To make them cook more quickly, rolled, quick, and instant oats are steamed, flattened, and pulverized to varying degrees, with rolled oats being the least processed and instant oatmeal being very processed and pulverized.

Steel cut oats are cut with steel blades and more closely resemble a whole oat in its original state.

Because they are more intact and less processed, steel cut oats take longer to cook than rolled, quick, and instant oats. The benefit of the wait: their texture is a delight! And even better, it works with both steel cut oats and rolled oats, for a healthy breakfast that I can make different every day of a week that doesnt require any babysitting or tending as it cooks.

Today Im sharing how to make Instant Pot oatmeal with both steel cut oats and rolled oats, plus 10 flavor combinationsfrom fruit or kale, to chocolate chips and nut buttersto make this oatmeal totally your own.

My family has a long history of eating oatmeal for breakfast. As a kid, I never even knew you could make oatmeal on the stove top, because my mom would always buy the instant quick oats oatmeal packets, placing them easily within our elementary school arms reach so my little sister and I could boil the water for the packet of oats and mystery ingredients to make our own breakfast before school.

My mom was smart that way. We learned how to fend for ourselves and she earned herself a little extra mom time in the morning with her coffee and the Today Show.

I was looking for a recipe with both brown sugar and oatmeal and came up with this!! Enjoy!

Provided by ADTC

1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
cup white sugar
2 packets instant maple and brown sugar oatmeal
1 egg, beaten

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F . Grease 12 muffin cups.
  • Combine 3 tablespoons flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl. Use a pastry blender or two knives to cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Reserve.
  • Combine 1 3/4 cup flour, white sugar, baking powder, salt, and the instant oatmeal in a large bowl. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture; pour in the egg, milk, and oil. Stir just until moistened. Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups, filling each 2/3 full. Evenly sprinkle streusel topping over muffins.
  • Bake in preheated oven until toothpick inserted in center of muffin comes out clean, about 15 minutes. Cool on wire rack for 5 minutes before serving.

Both rolled oats and steel cut oats are high in protein, fiber, and nutrients and are a healthy choice. Because they are less processed, however, steel cut oats are better than rolled oats in several ways.

  • While both types of oats contain fiber with cholesterol-lowering properties , steel cut oats have a higher level of fiber than rolled oats. Each serving of steel cut oats has about 5 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein.
  • Steel cut oats rank lower on the glycemic index than rolled oats, meaning the body will digest and turn them into sugar more slowly.
  • Steel cut oats are minimally processed and naturally gluten free, making them ideal for people with gluten sensitivities.

Im super hurried and need a fast bowl of oatmeal, Ill make rolled oats, which are the second best option behind steel cut oats. For a meal, I avoid quick oats, which are more processed and have an inferior texture to rolled oats or steel cut oats. Always avoid instant oats which have a gummy, unpleasant texture once cooked and offer fewer health benefits.

The only downside of steel cut oats compared to rolled oats is that they take longer to cook. Thats where the Instant Pot comes in!

How To Cook Instant Pot Oatmeal

Making old-fashioned oats in the Instant Pot is incredibly simple.

RIDICULOUSLY SIMPLE.

Step One: Place the trivet in the inner pot of your pressure cooker and pour in 1 cup cold water for 6-quart instant pots and 1.5 cups of water for an 8-quart Instant Pot.

Step Two: In a heat-safe bowl, mix your oats and liquid together with a bit of flaxseed. The flaxseed is optional but adds omega fatty acids and fiber.

Step Three: Put the lid on your instant pot, turn your valve to “sealed”, and set your pressure cooker to cook on high pressure for 3 minutes.; I have found it takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes to come to pressure.

Step Four: Allow your oatmeal to sit in the Instant Pot for at least 5 minutes before doing a quick release of remaining pressure–see my tips on doing a quick release in my Instant Pot 101.

I would not release the pressure right away, because this may cause your oatmeal to spill out of your pot in pot.

Step Five: Serve warm with any desired toppings.

What Kind Of Oats

This recipe works well with either old fashioned rolled oats or steel cut oats. Steel cut oats will need a little extra cooking time and a little more liquid, as noted in the recipe card.

In steel cut oats the oat grains are left whole and then cut into small pieces. On the other hand for rolled oats the oat grains are rolled flat.

Steel cut oats are less processed than rolled oats and have a little more fiber. But the biggest difference between the two types of oats is texture.

After cooking rolled oats will be creamier and have a softer texture. Steel cut oats will be firmer. So pick whichever one you and your family prefer. My family prefers rolled oats, so that is what I usually make.
