    Water To Brown Rice Ratios To Use

    Here is a breakdown of the measurements I used for each variety:

    • 1 dry measuring cup short-grain brown rice : 8 fluid ounces water ;
    • 2 dry measuring cup short-grain brown rice : 16 fluid ounces water ;
    • 1 dry measuring cup long-grain brown rice : 8 fluid ounces water ;
    • 2 dry measuring cup long-grain brown rice : 16 fluid ounces water ;

    Do You Have To Rinse Brown Rice First

    How to Cook Short Grain Brown Rice: Stovetop, Instant Pot ...

    Technically, no, you dont have to rinse your brown rice before cooking it, but I highly recommend it.

    Rinsing rice before cooking removes some of the starch that can cause the rice to turn out gummy. And I personally like a little more definition between the rice grains, which you only get by straining it.

    The easiest way to rinse rice is by putting it in a fine mesh strainer and running cold water over it for a minute or two.

    If you dont have a fine mesh strainer, you could always line a regular colander with cheesecloth or a coffee filter to keep the rice grains from falling through.

    How To Make It

    To make this, I start with 2 cups of brown rice and 2 ½ cups of water, stock or broth.

    I then seal my Instant Pot and set the timer for 15 minutes. I then let my Instant Pot release pressure naturally. Youll see that all of the liquid from the water, stock or broth that you added are absorbed into the rice making it tender and delicious.

    Youll also notice that I do not add a lot of seasoning to my recipe as it cooks. Heres why. I prefer to leave it unseasoned so that I can season it based on the dish that I am serving it with or including it in. Of course, if you are preparing your rice to serve immediately, seasonings are perfect to include. If you are making batches of it like I like to do, youll most likely prefer for it to be unseasoned as well.

    Fluff your rice using a fork and then serve.

    What Is Glycemic Index

    Glycemic index is a value that is assigned to food that ranks items based on how fast they affect your blood glucose levels. The scale runs from 0 to 100.

    Foods on the lower end of the scale slowly release glucose at a steady rate. Foods on the higher end release glucose rapidly and can lead to blood sugar spikes.

    Eating low glycemic index foods such as brown rice, sweet potatoes, and whole grain breads help you feel fuller longer and tend to be a better choice for weight loss.

    Glycemic index of rice:

    Instant Pot Brown Rice Method: 15 Minutes High Pressure 5 Minutes Natural Release Followed By A Quick Release

    • Rating: 10/10
    • Timing: 30 minutes, including 8 minutes to come to pressure

    About this method: Amy and Jacky of Pressurecookrecipes.com are one of the most trusted sources for Instant Pot cooking methods, so, of course, we had to put their brown rice technique to the test. While this method doesnt call for rinsing the rice, the recipe notes include instructions for reducing the water slightly to account for additional moisture if you prefer to rinse. Using a one-to-one water-to-rice ratio, the recipe calls for cooking the rice for 15 minutes under high pressure and using natural release for just 5 minutes to finish cooking.

    Results: This method produced the most ideal brown rice: soft and slightly chewy, with separate grains that didnt become sticky or overcooked in reheating. Plus, we loved that there was no rinsing required.

    Keeping the rice to water at one-to-one even if you do rinse the rice and doing a short natural release gives you brown rice thats perfectly cooked every time. Amy and Jacky include lots of detailed notes from their testing that can help you adapt this recipe for different electric pressure cookers, too.

    Should I Use The Rice Button On My Instant Pot

    Most InstaPots will come with this button. This button is perfect if using white/brown rice . If using any type o rice such as brown, black, etc., be aware that the water temperature will stay the exact same when you add the instant pot. So if cooking brown rice before adding the Instant pot, add 10 minutes less than the recipe calls for. You can also use this option if your Instantpot is set to cook rice in batches. Just be careful to keep the temp between 165 and 175 degrees F. Also, if the pot is over heated, there is a risk of burning the lid. To avoid this, use a tight fitting lid or use an oven safe lid instead. There is no need to remove the cover from the top of your pot once youve added the ingredients. Once the cooker is done cooking, simply remove it from heat and let it cool down.
