How Do You Know If Your Instant Pot Is Sealed

Instant Pot Not Working

9 times out of 10 the reason why your Instant Pot won’t come to pressure is that it is not sealed correctly. There are plenty of reasons this occurs and thankfully, this is easily remedied.

There are TWO ways to determine if your Instant Pot is not sealing.

  • Depending on your recipe, it can take anywhere from 5 to even 30 minutes for pressure to be reached and cook time to begin on a pressure cooker. If that time has elapsed and the float valve has not popped up and cook time has not begun, chances are high your pressure cooker is not able to seal. Please note that if you have large quantities of a frozen food or lots of liquid in your instant pot, it may take up to 45 minutes to fully reach pressure.
  • If cook time begins on the Instant Pot begins but the float valve has NOT popped up, the Instant Pot is not sealed.
  • Another reason the Instant Pot does not function correctly is that it gets a burn notice. Often times this occurs as the instant pot is trying to come to pressure and occurs when a recipe is not followed correctly. You will see burn or ovrht, which indicates your instant pot has overheated and something is burned to the bottom of your inner pot.

Home cooking can sometimes feel like a chore, but whether it’s to save money or improve your health and wellbeing, there are dozens of reasons to make your own meals from scratch on a regular basis.

One of the best Instant Pots can ensure that preparing meals yourself is easier and less time-consuming. However, there’s a wide array of Instant Pot models to choose from, and knowing which Instant Pot to buy can be a bit daunting.

Some offer as many as 48 presets ensuring can be used for a wide array of cooking methods. However, they will all pressure cook, steam, slow cook, and sauté. Pressure cooking can sound scary, but in actual fact, the Instant Pot makes it completely hands-free.

You simply turn off the vent to allow the chamber to pressurize, and your meat will cook in record time. It’s ideal whether you left it a bit late to defrost the chicken and have it cooked in time for dinner, or you love a slow-cooked brisket but don’t want to leave your oven on for hours while it cooks.

While it’s not a feature you’ll find in all Instant Pots, higher-end models come with a lid to convert them into an air fryer. This will mimic the flavor and texture of deep-fried food, but with a lot less fat and mess to clean away afterward.

The Pot Is Showing A Burn Message

How to Instant Pot: Instant Pot Leaking Steam, Instant Pot Won’t Seal Properly

This usually happens when the sensors think the pot in danger of burning your food . Often, this means that theres not enough liquid in the pot, or that the liquid hasnt reached all the bottom corners of the pot, which is easy to fix. You may also need to let your pot cool down if youve been sautéing on high heat for a while. For more complex meals, layer your starches and sauces on top of other ingredients to create a barrier between them and the bottom heater. Also, elevating meats using the cooking rack can help. Finally, if you have sautéed a liquid sauce or similar ingredient, make sure no bits are stuck to the pot before you move on to the next task.

Use Rice Button For Cooking All Types Of Rice

Mistake: Weve heard some new Instant Pot users have less than satisfactory results with their rice cooked in the Instant Pot using the Rice Button.

    Dont be discouraged!

Solution: Different types of rice require different water to rice ratios& cooking times. For best results, we like to use the Manual Button for most control on Cooking Method & Time.

Here are our Perfect Rice Recipes:

Things You Need To Know About Instant Pot

    1) QR – this is a term you’ll see in manuals and recipes and it literally means you are manually releasing the pressure quickly by your turning the vent valve located on the top of the lid to “open”. When do you use it? The rule of thumb is to use this for veggies , non-foaming foods and if your pot is NOT filled up to the Max. I also use it to add ingredients in the middle of cooking, i.e. veggies for Beef Stew and then continue to cook until done. Cover the vent with a towel to diffuse the strong pressure of steam or anything else that might come out. Turn the valve slowly and close it quickly if you see sputtering of food. Slowly open it little at a time until the force is less. Be smart about it and use caution. Use tongs if you are nervous handling the valve. Otherwise, food will sputter out through the vent and you and the wall will be redecorated…not necessarily in the color of your choice.

    3) Need at LEAST ½ C – 1 cup of liquid for the pot to come to pressure. – There are many reasons why the pot comes to pressure different length of time, such as, how much liquid or solid is in the pot. Are you using frozen or thawed ingredients… etc. But in general, for 6 QT, ½ to 1 cup and for 8 QT, at least 2 cups of liquid is all you need. Again, this depends on what you’re cooking. Since the pot needs liquid to come to pressure cooking really dry food for a long period of time will require more liquid. If you’re steaming veggies, you may only need ½ cup.

Which Instant Pot Is The Best For Beginners

Instant Pot first-timers may want to keep it simple at first, with clear and easy-to-use presets front and center. We recommend the Instant Pot Duo Evo Plus for beginners. It’s got an amped-up design to make steam release even safer, which is ideal for those who are intimidated by the thought of pressure cooking. The new plastic cover will prevent any splatters of steam from leaving the lid, and it also makes the process less noisy.

Even for beginners, you’ll want an Instant Pot that will allow you to experiment once you get to grips with it. The Duo Evo Plus is great for this. It has the classic settings such as Slow Cook, Sous Vide, and Pressure Cook available with buttons that line the display, so you won’t have to get involved with the more specific presets for rice, stews, and even cheesecakes until you’re comfortable.

The Duo Evo Plus has 48 settings in total, and the digital display will keep you up-to-date with how your recipe is coming along. If you do want to get more experimental, there’s also the Instant Pot app, although we did miss the inclusion of a recipe book when we tried it hands-on.

    Difficulty With Opening The Lid

8 Things That Should Never Go In Your Instant Pot

Instant Pot is equipped with about 10 safety mechanisms and one of them is not allowing the lid to open while there is still pressure inside the cooker. If lid doesnt open and cooking cycle has finished, make sure to turn steam release handle to Venting to release pressure and open the lid. It should work!

On rare occasions, Instant Pot float valve can stuck at the popped up position. All you have to do is just press on it lightly with a pen or long utensil.

    Difficulty With Closing The Lid

Difficulty with closing the lid usually happens when you decide to add other ingredients while Instant Pot is heating up or opened the lid when display says On but Instant Pot hasnt come to pressure yet. Hot steam will push float valve to rise making it difficult to close the lid. What I do then is slightly press on the float valve downward wearing an oven mitt at same time as I am trying to close the lid it helps to release excess pressure.

This Sounds Too Good To Be True

I wouldnt lie to you. Instant Pot is a misnomer. Its not a miracle, and it does not cook food in an instant. Nothing does, unless you live on Cup Noodles.

Here’s the catch: It takes time for the Instant Pot to come to pressure.

Typically, the time it takes the cooker to get to pressure is not part of that cooking time. For instance, if a pot roast cooks for 30 minutes at pressure, the total time from start to finish for a recipe like this might be more like 45 minutes or more. An Instant Pots heating element has less juice than the burners on your range, so it takes longer to heat food enough to get to pressure.

BUT! The ease of use frees you up to do other things. With most recipes, Instant Pots truly are set it and forget it. Lets say youre making a stir-fry, and youd like brown rice to go with it. Before you start prepping the stir-fry, put the rice and water in the Instant Pot, program it to cook for 22 minutes at pressure, then go about your business.

Youre Having Issues With The Sealing Ring

How to Steam Broccoli in Instant Pot – 0 min & tips!

    The Ring isnt in Place

Another common slip-up, your sealing ring may not be in place. Double-check that its seated properly in the ring rack. If it isnt: Rotate and gently press down on the ring until it pops into place. If your sealing ring isnt in the correct position, you may notice that steam is leaking from the sides of the lid.

    Youre Missing the Sealing Ring

Alternatively, you may have lost the sealing ring entirely! If there is no ring lining near the lid of the instant pot, youll need to get one for a tight seal. Heres one that comes in three different colors and sizes:

Once youve received your sealing ring, do the same as if it were displaced and rotate and put pressure onto the ring until it seals in place in the ring rack.

The Ring Has Expanded or is Damaged

If your instant pot has been in your household for a few years and is used often, it may be that the sealing ring has expanded over time or is damaged and just wont seal right. The only solution is to buy a new ring, like the one above, so that you can get that perfect seal again!

The Sealing Ring is Coated in Food Debris

Its important to clean the sealing ring every now and again to avoid food debris build-up. Too much debris can mess up the sealing properties of the ring and keep it from closing the instant pot as it should. To resolve this issue, clean the ring thoroughly with hot water and soap until all debris is removed.

Why Wont My Pressure Cooker Build Pressure

If you find that your pressure cooker will not maintain pressure for very long or at all, there could be an issue with your gasket. To troubleshoot this issue, take a look at the gasket and see if there is any noticeable damage to it.

If it has food residue along with it, remove it and wash it in cold water. Reinstall it and see if that is the issue. If it has cracks in it, you will need to replace it.
