    How To Clean Your Smelly Instant Pot Sealing Ring

    Were you one of the MANY people who received an Instant Pot over the holidays? If so, welcome to the cult. One of the first things I made in mine was pulled chicken tacos, riffed from a few blog recipes and the instructional manual. The Instant Pot is awesome for shreddy chicken in around 30 minutes. But the next time I pulled the pot out off my bookshelf-full-of-kitchen-stuff-and-not-books, a waft of cumin hit me in the nostrils. Oof. The Instant Pots rubber sealing ring takes on smell like a school-issued soccer jerseynot a breathable fabric.

    Its dishwasher safe, and most of the time that gets the scent out. But I dont have a dishwasher, and maybe you dont either, which is why youre here. Some people buy two rings to keep the savory separate from the sweet you can get and stop reading this. Yet two rings felt extraneous to me, person with an entire shelf of spillover kitchen appliances, pots, and specialty gelatin molds, so Id rather just clean it. Heres how.

    As a lot of cleaning in the kitchen goes, white vinegar is the answer. Soak the ring in white vinegar diluted with water, as long as you can stand it. I do this in my sink with a few glugs of vinegar and then water to cover, but you could do it in a sheet pan as pictured above or a plastic tub, whatever. After an hour or whenever you remember it was soaking, wash with dish soap and leave it out to dryin the sun is ideal.

    To Clean The Exterior Side Of The Pot:

    How to clean the lid of your Instant Pot 7-in-1

    If you wish to deep clean your exterior pot, you will need to take the same ingredients that were used to clean the inner pot, except you will replace the evaporated water with a few tablespoons of hot tap water. Add about one-fourth of a cup of baking soda to the water. Stir to mix. Place the pot on a wire rack that is placed inside a shallow dishpan. Cover with a damp cloth, and bring to a boil. Turn off the burners, and turn up the heat to medium-high, or boil your dish to make sure it stays hot.

    While your inner pot is heating up, wash and dry the outside of the pot, making sure the entire surface is well-cleaned. When the outer surface has been thoroughly cleaned, turn the dial to low, and allow the inner pot to sit for about fifteen minutes, or until the steam begins to dissipate. Turn up the heat to medium-high, and continue to dry the pot.

    Scrub The Cooking Pot

    Instant Pots come with an inner pot made of stainless steel that can handle a lot of cooking methods — even searing and browning meats. The drawback, though, is that bits of food and char can really cling to it. Rice can be particularly stubborn. Here are a couple common scenarios.

    Blueish stains. The Instant Pot is like any stainless-steel cookware and can develop blueish stains caused by minerals in water and food. To remove these stains, simply soak the pot in white vinegar for about 5 minutes and rinse away. If there’s more, soak a sponge in vinegar and use a little elbow grease.;

    Stuck-on food. To get rid of any build-up or food stains, first try soaking the pot with a little dish soap and warm water. The treatment significantly softens stuck-on junk that should then scrub away easily. If that doesn’t work, it’s time to try Bar Keeper’s Friend, which is safe for stainless-steel cookware like the Instant Pot’s pot. Sprinkle a little bit on the affected area, then use a soft, damp sponge to work away the grime. Rinse thoroughly, and you’re set.;

    The pot is dishwasher-safe, too, so you can pop it in on the bottom rack for deep cleaning.

    Instant Pot lids have many parts that can get dirty or clogged.

    Before cleaning your pressure cooker’s lid, the anti-block shield and silicone sealing ring;should be removed and cleaned separately. The anti-block shield is a small round or oval element installed underneath the lid. To remove the anti-block shield, use your thumb to gently push the piece toward the lid rim and lift up to pop it off. Hand-wash the shield in warm, soapy water and wipe dry with a clean cloth. Remove the sealing ring and inspect it carefully for cracking, warping, or other damage, which are signs you need to replace it. The sealing ring can be hand-washed in soapy water or placed in the dishwasher. Because it is heat-resistant, you can place it on either rack of your dishwasher.

    With the anti-block shield and sealing ring removed, wash the Instant Pot lid in warm, soapy water or place it on the top rack of the dishwasher. Once clean, check the lid’s steam release valve and float valve to ensure they’re clear of food particles that could prevent the cooker from maintaining pressure. If needed, remove and hand-wash the cup that collects condensation.

    Is There A Way To Fully Disassemble And Deep Clean The Instant Pot

    This is a little more in depth process for cleaning your Instant Pot and removing odors from Instant Pot parts.

    1. Always start with an unplugged Instant Pot.

    2. Take the inner pot and the lid apart and clean those first. You can use a cotton or microfiber cloth, some dish soap and vinegar to clean, disinfect, and polish up the Instant Pot surfaces.

    3. Make sure you also clean the exterior of your Instant Pot while you are working your way through this process. The housing will need cleaning but can NOT be submerged in water.

    4. To deep clean the lid and remove odor from Instant Pot parts you will need to remove the steam release handle, the anti block shield, and then remove any dirt or particles that might be in the steam valve.

    Note: Do not remove the steam valve itself, just make sure its clean and sanitized. Reassemble the lid components and we will move on!

    5. Cleaning the float valve and the silicone ring that anchored the float valve. They can both be replaced once you are done with the cleaning process.

    7. You will want to give the inner pot, steam rack, and any other accessories a good scrubbing.

    Take Off The Sealing Ring

    The very first step is to take off the rubber sealing ring. If you leave it on, it could hold moisture in and then start smelling or growing mildew.

    The lid is dishwasher safe, as long as you put it on the top rack and you take off all the loose parts .

    How often you replace the sealing ring depends on how often you use your Instant Pot. Some people change the sealing ring about every 6 months, and others do it once a year.

    Every time you clean the lid, you should remove the sealing ring and use a damp rag to clean it. Then, dry it off all the way before you put it back.

    The anti-block shield can be a pain to get off as its tighter than the other pieces. I found luck gently twisting and pushing upward at the same time.

    Once off, you can clean the lid shield with hot soapy water. You can clean the part underneath the same way. You might find a Q-tip or other small brush to help get in the crevices.

    Once clean and dry, just push the anti-block shield back on top of the exhaust valve.

    The discoloration is caused by salt and other minerals in food and water used in the Instant Pot – in fact, theyll appear on any stainless steel cookware, not just an Instant Pot. A non-abrasive stainless steel cleaner, such as Weiman, will remove the marks and revive the brightness on the inner pot. It can be picked up for around $6 / £11 / AU$28.;

    Alternatively, if you dont have any stainless steel cleaner to hand, try covering the bottom of the pot with white vinegar, and leave for five minutes before rinsing.;
