Air Fryer Instant Pot Reviews

Must Try

Features: No Programs Lots Of Cooking

Unbiased Review of the Instant Pot Vortex Air Fryer | Pros and Cons

While other models of Instant Pots have multiple program buttons for things like rice or poultry, this cooker eliminated them in favor of cooking mode buttons. For pressure cooking, the buttons are Pressure Cook, Sauté, Slow Cook, Steam, and Sous Vide. For air frying, the buttons are Air Fry, Roast, Bake, Broil, and De-Hydrate. Universal controls for temperature and time use + and buttons, and along the bottom of the controls are Delay Start, Cancel, Start, and Keep Warm.

Aside from the peculiar spelling of “dehydrate,” I like the cooking options on this model over cooking programs for specific foods. Brown rice and white rice dont cook the same, and chicken breasts arent the same as thighs, so Id rather set the time and temperature myself. Still, some cooks might miss the ease of pressing a single button to make stew.

Instant Pot Air Fryer Chicken Legs

I was not conservative with my choice of chicken parts or the amount. Again, learn from me and be moderate in your portions. I

air-fried at 400 F for 30 minutes with 2 tiers of trays that held 3 chicken legs each. I found that they were too big to put on the top ledge because they would touch the heating element. And placing two trays at the same time meant the bottom tray was squished. You need to rotate the bottom and top trays as well as flip each of the food items.

Regardless of the trials and errors, the actual taste and texture of the chicken were very tender and good. I made a ginger soy sauce honey marinade which looked burnt when it was done but it didnt taste burnt.

Halfway through the cooking time, there was a beep to indicate when to flip the food so that both sides would evenly crisp. I can see how this will be helpful once you get comfortable using the machine. But I was standing there watching it like watching paint dry or water boil.

It is really important to use long tongsto flip food items. You dont want to take any chances of dropping the food or burning yourself. There was a lot of grease left on the aluminum foil. Im extremely glad I put the foil to make clean up less of a headache later.

Instant Pot Pro Crisp Pressure Cooker & Air Fryer Review

To be fair, this is my complaint with most air fryers, but there are some air fryers and toaster ovens with air fry capabilities that can fit larger amounts. We are a family of 2, so it works ok for us for most applications, but if you are a family of 4 or more, or enjoy making large portions for leftovers, youll have to cook your food in multiple batches which is a pain really defeats the purpose of air frying!

What To Air Fry First Bacon

If you dont know what to cook first in the Instant Pots air fryer then make some bacon!

Proceed with caution. I got a little overly ambitious and decided to do the whole package of bacon. This resulted in my smoke alarm going off because the grease from the bacon started to burn and smoke.

I realized quickly to do things in moderation with this machine. Despite my smoke mishap, the bacon was perfectly delicious. I wrapped the drip catch tray with aluminum foil and set the temperature to 375 degrees for 10 min with 4 pieces of bacon per tray.

I had to rotate/ switch the 2 trays so they would get the same crispness. The whole ordeal is a greasy mess inside the Vortex. Thats one reason I thought to do the whole package of bacon, to have some for later with one-time cleanup. You can do several small batches, but make sure to discard the bacon grease and put in new aluminum foil.

But, the dilemma is how to get rid of pipping hot oil safely. The manual states to not clean anything until the machine has cooled completely. Maybe its not worth spilling hot oil everywhere. Dont be a glutton, just stick to 8 pieces of bacon.

I had to come up with a system for taking out the trays and safely putting them on a heat resistant surface and also could still catch the grease that would leak out of the graded trays that the bacon was laying on. This was really tricky at first. An easy solution was laying the little trays on a baking sheet.

Instant Vortex Plus Price And Availability

  • List price $119.95 / £119.99 / AU$269

The Instant Vortex Plus is priced at $119.95 / £119.99 / AU$269, and is available worldwide from Instants website its also available through Amazon in the US and Australia.

This is $30 / £20 / AU$40 more expensive than Instant Pots original air fryer, the Instant Vortex. However, as weve already mentioned, the Vortex Plus offers an extra two cooking methods so the price hike is understandable.

  • Crisper tray is dishwasher-safe
  • Bulky design requires plenty of countertop space

The Instant Vortex Plus is by no means a compact air fryer, measuring 12.83 x 14.92 x 12.36 inches / 32.6 x 37.9 x 31.4 cm . However, its large footprint means an equally large capacity of 6 quarts / 5.7 liters, and thanks to its multitude of cooking methods as weve mentioned it can now grill and dehydrate as well as air-fry, roast, bake, and reheat you should be able to consign a few of your other kitchen gadgets to the cupboard, so countertop space shouldnt be an issue.

The Vortex Plus retains the square shape of the Instant Vortex Air Fryer, including the square basket and dishwasher-safe crisper tray, but builds on this with a brushed stainless steel finish, although its not as fingerprint-resistant as you might hope.

  • Evenly browned crisp results for both fries and chicken wings
  • Handy reminder to turn the food halfway through cooking time
  • Exterior casing remains cool to the touch

8 quart model is practical without being outright huge

Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer review in a sentence: adding an air fryer to the usual Instant Pot smart pressure cooker is a genius move.

In todays world, it would seem impossible that there are those who dont know much about the Instant Pot brand of multi-cookers. The only problem Instant Pot has left for consumers with its product is deciding which is the best Instant Pot out of the dozens of versions it puts out.

Spend much time `browsing any major recipe blog, and before long, you are bound to see it mentioned. There are recipes for every meal of the day and every imaginable type of food. If you want to live in a tiny house and use an Instant Pot as your only kitchen appliance, you can find guidance. It hasnt always been like this, though.

Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer: What Is It

First up, we need to ask, ‘what even is an Instant Pot?’ It seems like a simple question but answering what the Instant Pot actually is can be a big conversation. The marketing sounds like a late-night infomercial with a never-ending list of features and a promise to do everything. Every time I talk to someone about the Instant Pot I have to start by unraveling the marketing and setting realistic expectations. Reality is a whole lot simpler than the Instant Pot marketing but no less useful.

The Instant Pot is a pressure cooker. Yes, it can make rice or sear meat but so can a stove top pressure cooker. Those features are side effects of being a pressure cooker but there’s nothing more complicated to it. That said, the Instant Pot is a really good, super easy to use, pressure cooker and pressure cookers have a lot of uses in a kitchen. Rice is easy to make, even easier with a rice maker, but if you’ve already got the Instant Pot it will do the same job without needing a second appliance. The marketing isn’t a lie but it over complicates expectations.

Anyway, back to the original question. The 8qt Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer adds in a new feature with the second included lid. Air Fryers are another product that get overzealous marketing but are still very useful. An Air Fryer is a small convection oven and there’s no real magic. High temp air gets circulated around the food and the exterior cooks quickly.

The Instruction Booklet Falls Short

I found myself struggling to get accustomed to how this machine works, at first. The provided booklet wasn’t as helpful as I would’ve liked. It doesn’t include photo diagrams describing each piece of the machine, so I had to dig through the Ninja website to find the full manual, which was more helpful.

There were other instructions that were lacking as well, like an explanation of how the steam knob works, and certain core recipes that disappointed me about the included booklet.

When you consider that some folks may not be as tech savvyor have access to the internet at allit’s much more crucial to include all the user information in the provided booklet, rather than hidden somewhere online.

Why Did I Get A Burn Notice On The Duo Crisp With Ultimate Lid

Since the Instant Pot Duo Crisp with Ultimate Lid cooks at 1500W, it runs hotter than the more traditional 1000W Instant Pot models. Since most Instant Pot recipes are developed for these more common, traditional models, in rare occasions the higher heat will trigger the Burn Notice.

When the Instant Pot Duo Crisp with Ultimate Lid reads FOOD BURN, the first things to check are:

  • Does the inner pot have enough liquid?
  • Are any food deposits stuck to the bottom of the inner pot?

If youve gotten the burn notice, remove the inner cooking pot from the base. Check for debris inside the pressure cooker housing or on the outside of the stainless steel cooking pot.

Then check the cooking pot.

If just a little food has burned onto the bottom of the cooking pot, scoop the food into a separate bowl and scrape the burned parts away. Return the food to the cooking pot. At this point, you can add more liquid to the pressure cooking pot and try another pressure cooking cycle. Or you can transfer the pot to the stove or oven and stir while you finish cooking.

If a lot of food has burned on, youll be able to taste the burnt taste throughout and, unfortunately, you may have to discard the meal. Soak and scrub off the burned foods. Barkeepers friend is a useful cleaner to help remove stubborn stains.

In the future, be sure to add more liquid to the pot and avoid ingredients containing thickeners like canned soups or prepackaged spaghetti sauces.

How I Tested The Instant Pot Air Fryers

Instant Pot 8

To see how the air fryers compared to one another, I headed to Trader Joes and went straight to the freezer aisle. I grabbed bags of frozen french fries, orange chicken, and cauliflower gnocchi. Frozen food created a level playing field plus, if any of the air fryers didnt work well for frozen fries, that would be a huge strike against them. I tested the fries first, then the chicken, and, lastly, the cauliflower gnocchi air-frying everything according to the package instructions. I also evaluated how easy the air fryers were to use and clean, and if there were any other glaring differences, like if one was much louder than the others. Heres what I found out.

The First Pressure Cooker Lid Broke Rendering It Unusable

During one of my first sessions using the Duo Crisp with Ultimate Lid, an essential piece of the pressure cooker lid that helps fasten it to the main lid snapped off, rendering it unusable as a pressure cooker or slow cooker. I can’t say for sure how it happened though the first few times I attached the pressure lid, I had to muscle it a bit to get it on.

A small and seemingly unimportant plastic bit will render your Instant Pot’s pressure cooker lid useless if it snaps off, as mine did.

In the replacement lid that I was sent, the small plastic protuberance that snapped off didn’t seem particularly shoddy. That said, I’d caution anyone with this model to be gentler than I was in trying to secure and remove the lid.

Ease Of Purchase / Availability

Ok, lets get the bad grade out of the way early. I give this category a BIG FAIL.

I am Canadian, and at the time of writing this, the Vortex was available only in one store , and only in the United States.

So, to get one, I bought it on vacation in Texas and FLEW with it home .

So, the positive here is that the factory boxing is A+. It got to Canada with me in one piece.

Dear Instant Brand, you are a Canadian company. Not having this available in Canada is ludicrous.

Ok, rant over. Moving on.

EDIT: I am so happy to report that the Instant Vortex air fryer is now in Canada, I have changed the availability score to C from F. I still have it as average because it is not easily found everywhere in Canada and only at a few retailers.
