The Instant Pot Is Taking Too Long To Start The Timer

Instant Pot Pressure Cooker blows up

Remember, Instant Pots take time to heat up. The Instant Pot will take 10 to 15 minutes to heat up and bring the pressure to proper levels, and then it will start the timer. So when a recipe says pressure-cook in Instant Pot for 5 minutes, you should always mentally add the extra time beforehand. If it still seems like its taking too long, check your settings carefully to make sure you are in the right mode.

Other Tips To Prevent Instant Pot Injury

Keep the liquid level low:

Always use ½ 1 cup of liquid while cooking. Instant pot builds up pressure inside in order to cook the food. Therefore, adding half to one cup of water can pressurize the cooker and make it easily to prepare the food. Never skip this step to avoid explosion.

Keep the food level low:

Never fill up the food to the maximum level of pressure cooking in your instapot. There are many food elements that expand during the cooking process. If those elements clog the valve, it can cause an explosion. So while cooking meals like pasta, rice, beans, oats, etc., always keep the level lower than the maximum to avoid any accident.

Use different buttons and functions:

Try to utilize different functions and buttons while cooking. An instapot can be used to cook various food items. There are several buttons which can be used in different styles of cooking. For example, the button you use to boil rice or potato will not be the same as the ones you must use for boiling meat and vegetables.

Never use instapot for deep-frying:

Many people like experimenting instapot for frying, but this shouldnt be done. Remember that this appliance cannot create that much pressure to fry your food. By trying to fry in it forcefully, you will end up damaging the instant pot and that additional pressure built in it may lead to an explosion.

Adjust the temperature and timing:

Never go near the steam:

Let the pressure build:

Causes Of Pressure Cooker Explosions And How To Avoid Them

A pressure cooker is a sealed cooking vessel that uses high pressure to increase the boiling point of liquids. This allows food to cook more quickly and with less water and energy than with standard cooking methods. However, pressure cookers can be dangerous. Manufacturing defects and design defects are frequently the cause of pressure cooker explosions. Some common injuries from pressure cooker use are steam burns, contact burns, splashed/spilled hot liquids, and explosion. However, proper use can minimize the risk of these types of injuries when using a pressure cooker.

    Frequent Defects in Pressure Cookers

  • Inadequate Lid Seals An inadequate lid seal can result in spilling and expulsion of cooker contents.
  • Faulty Gaskets that Allow Premature Opening A faulty gasket that allows the premature opening of the pot during high pressure can cause steam and contact burns.
  • Inadequate Venting Inadequate venting can cause a pressure cooker to explode.
  • Tips for Safely Using Pressure Cookers

  • Inspect the Pressure Cooker Before Cooking The rubber gasket between the pot and lid is critical to the proper functioning of a pressure cooker. Before cooking, ensure the gasket is clean and is not cracked or dried out. Some manufacturers suggest replacing the rubber gasket once a year, depending on how frequently you use your pressure cooker.
  • Instant Pot Intimidation All Those Buttons

Many people fear the Instant pot simply because they are afraid of all of the functions. It can seem overwhelming! In reality it is really easy.

Here is the dirty little secret about those buttons. Actually it isnt even a secret: They are pretty meaningless. Not entirely, but you really dont need them all.

Most recipes you will find will give directions for using just one function: Manual high pressure. You can hit that button and setting, set your time, and go. Other functions really are for the most part just presets of this. So, dont get worried if you find yourself making something on the manual setting that has its own specialized setting. It really will be OK!

The other most used function is saute. It heats your pot up like pan on the stove so you can brown things in it or soften onions etc. You can also use it to simmer things. I seriously have only ever used the manual and saute functions on my Instant Pot! And I am an Instant Pot addict who writes a whole blog about these things!

All those other buttons can often be ignored, or feel free to use them as desired or if a recipe calls for them. Yogurt is a big exception though. If you want to make yogurt, get to know your pot first and then dive into various yogurt recipes using that function.

My dirty little secret is that I am still afraid of the yogurt button. Well, OK, I actually also dont eat yogurt. So, I havent written about it on this site yet.

    Do Regular Pressure Cookers Explode

Stove-top pressure cookers with clamps to hold the lid in place have been known to explode if the lid was improperly locked, if too high of heat was used creating excess pressure, or if a faulty gasket on the lid had not been replaced.

But this mostly applies to old-school pressure cookers like your grandma used to use.

They had a locking lid that kept the pressure in, but unlike todays modern Instant Pots, since they were heated on a stovetop, they had no protection against temperature, overheating, or shutting off under potentially dangerous situations.

    Not sure what I mean?

Imagine heating a can of carbonated soda and then shaking it up . That would pretty quickly become dangerous as the pull-top lid could easily weaken and start to shoot scalding hot soda in all directions.

Old stove-top style pressure cookers essentially work in the same way.

Of course, Im sure there are tens of thousands of people who have used these older model pressure cookers who have never seen one explode or been injured, but they could and do happen occasionally.

Now having said that, chances are if there was an old pressure cooker that exploded, it was probably caused by user error such as:

    • Filling it up too high
    • Putting too much cooking liquid in it
    • Leaving it on the burner too long
    • Putting the burner temperature too high

Instant Pot Falsely Advertised Safety Features

Epic Fail… I think I’ve blown up my new Instant pot max #01

The plaintiff seeks to hold the Instant Pot manufacturer liable for her childs injuries. She states that the company advertised its product as being equipped with 11 safety mechanisms, including a safety lid lock. Yet the lock didnt work as expected.

Instant Pot claims on its website that when the pot is pressurized, the lid will automatically lock to prevent opening the cooker. It also states that if the lid is not in a safe position for pressure cooking, the cooker will not allow cooking to begin. The Instant Pot manual contains similar verbiage, stating that once pressurized, the lid will lock.

Instant Pot also used media outlets to advertise its cooker. In one YouTube video, the spokesperson states that users dont have to be afraid of the device because of its safety features. With 10 safety features built-in, you can use your Instant Pot with confidence, knowing that it is not going to explode, the video states.

In another similar video, a spokesperson boasts about the products safety, stating that once the lid is locked and the contents under pressure, there is no way to open the pressure cooker.

Is It Safe To Leave The House With An Instant Pot On

Do not leave the house with an Instant Pot on or leave it unattended for more than 15 minutes. Instant Pots are incredibly safe and have many built-in safety features. But, unlike a Crock-Pot, it is not advisable to leave the house for an extended period of time with an Instant Pot on.

That being said, in terms of not leaving the house, Im talking about using it as a pressure cooker.

As weve mentioned elsewhere, the Instant Pot can do a whole lot more than just pressure cook. So if youre using it as a slow cooker or on the keep warm function, its just fine to leave the house with it on.

Its also worth mentioning that the Instant Pot does have an auto-shut-off after 24 hours, so make sure you arent forgetting about it longer than that.

It goes without saying that food outside the temperature safety zone of below 40° or above 140° isnt safe to consume once its been in the danger zone 2 or more hours.

So the Keep Warm setting works best when youre just holding the food a few hours prior to serving. The slow cooker function, just like you would with a Crock-Pot, is designed for about 10 hours maximum cooking time.

Pressure cookers and slow cookers are both great for cooking food quickly and easily. They each have their own advantages, but which is the best? Heres a look at what each has to offer:

Pressure cookers are great for cooking food quickly and evenly. They work by using high pressure to heat up the pot and seal in the flavors, resulting in delicious, evenly cooked food. One downside of pressure cookers is that they can be difficult to clean however, they are generally very easy to use. Slow cookers are also great for cooking quickly and evenly, but they work on a much lower heat so the food doesnt get too hot and burn. This makes them perfect for dishes like chicken breasts that might turn out tough if cooked over high heat.
