Instant Pot Max: Performance And Size

As previously mentioned, the Instant Pot Max is the most efficient cooker of all of the brands models, with its higher pressure settings allowing food to cook even faster, whilst using 70% less energy. So its no surprise that this pot is also more powerful, with 1110 watts of power over the usual 1000.

The Instant Pot Max is only available in a six-quart size, which is the middle-sized option from the brand. This might make it unsuitable for large family homes to use every day, as the quart size tends to reflect the number of meals it can make. If you need to make more portions at mealtimes or to cater to large functions, the Instant Pot Duo Plus in the eight-quart size might be more suitable for you.

The Instant Pot Max weighs 14.27 pounds and has a width of 12.2 inches and a height of 12.6 inches. As with all Instant Pots, it also has a year-long warranty.

Instant Pot Max Features That May Take Some Getting Use To

  • The steam release valve releases bursts of steam as its coming to pressure. The Max is noisier than other Instant Pots when its coming to pressure. The bursts of steam did make me jump now and again. The steam bursts only occur for a short period of time and are getting rid of unsaturated steam . The liquid loss is minimal, but the bursts of steam do take some getting use to.
  • Dont use the automatic quick release with things that foam.
  • The pulse release takes a long time, so you may want to reduce your cook time if youre using it. With just two cups of water in the inner pot, it took 16 minutes for the pressure to release using the pulse release.
  • You can switch between NR, PR and QR but it isnt as quick as opening and closing the valve manually.
  • Steam Release Valve Doesnt Need to Be Reset you never have to worry about whether your steam release valve is in the open or closed position. However, you do need to remove the steam release valve cover and make sure the steam release valve is properly seated before each use.
  • The Max remembers your last setting so be sure and check pressure and release settings each time you use it.

Steam Canning In An Instant Pot

As the name implies, an instant pot is supposed to make the process of canning your food easier and faster. And I have found that the process has never been simpler.

Here are the steps to using your instant pot to steam your food.

  • Add about 3 cups of water to the pot and then place the trivet inside. You can also add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to guarantee sterilization, but this step is optional.
  • Fill your jars while they are hot, leaving about ½ an inch of headspace. Then you can either shake the jar to get bubbles out or use a fancy debubbler to do the same job.
  • Use a clean, damp paper towel and wipe off the rim of the jar to ensure that you have a good seal.
  • Once you’ve filled all of your jars and carefully used a jar lifter to place all of them within the instant pot, the next step is to close the lid and set the cycle to steam, and make sure the pressure valve is venting.
  • Once the steam is venting, you set the timer according to your recipe.
  • Once it’s finished, wait for the float valve to drop before opening the lid and using your jar lifter again. Place your jars on a cooling rack and leave them at room temperature for at least 12 hours. Then you’ll be good to go!

Putting The Max To The Test

Instant Pot Max Pressure Cooker 9 in 1, Best for Canning with 15PSI and ...

I tested the Instant Pot Max and the Instant Pot Duo Plus side by side with just 2 cups of water in the pots. The float valve rose and the timer started about 1 minute faster on the Duo Plus than on the Max using high pressure on the Duo Plus and on the Max. The quick release time was exactly the same on both, 3 minutes.

Next I tested the pulse release. Using the pulse release on the Max it took 16 minutes to release the pressure using just 2 cups of water.

One of my favorite things to pressure cook is hard boiled eggs. So the first thing I cooked in the Max after doing the water test, was hard boiled eggs.

The cooking chart recommend a 4 minute cook time at Max pressure 15 psi. So I decided to do a side by side test with the Instant Pot Duo Plus. I set a cook time on the Max of 4 minutes with a quick release. The Duo Plus I set a cook time of 6 minutes, used a 6 minutes natural release and 6 minutes in an ice water bath my go to time for hard boiled eggs.

My Max cooked hard boiled eggs were perfect with a 4 minute cook time and quick release.

I pressed the venting button and it switched to natural release and it closed the steam release valve, but Ill be careful not to select the quick release on the Max again with things like pasta that can foam.

Finally I did a side by side test of the NutriBoost feature making a batch of Creamy Lemon Parmesan Risotto in both pots. I cooked both on high pressure for 5 minutes and used a quick pressure release.

What Is A Pressure Canner

A pressure canner is a specialized pot specifically for preserving low acid foods safely.

A pressure canner operated at 10.5 pounds per square inch of pressure will reach an internal temperature of 240ºF at sea level. Higher elevations will require more pressure to reach that minimum temperature.

Processing jars at 240ºF is the only way to assure that the internal temperature of the food in each jar reaches a sufficient temperature to kill off any botulism spores that might be present.

Instant Pot Max Pressure Cooker Review Conclusion

Comparing the Presto Digital and Instant Pot Max for Pressure Canning

There are so many reasons to love the Max, but the biggest reason is the automatic pressure release. I put corn on the cob in the inner pot, set the cook time and quick release, and went outside to grill some steaks. I didnt have to worry about coming back inside to release the pressure on the corn to avoid overcooking it. The Max took care of it all on its own.

Im going to use the automatic pulse release for releasing pressure when cooking meats. Its slow and gradual enough that it will give meats that little bit of rest time that they need while speeding up the process of releasing the pressure.

I think everyone is going to love the additional information the LCD screen gives them, and the pressure indicator light that lets you know easily when the pressure has been released.

The Max is now available at Williams Sonoma and .

But Theres A Canning Setting On My Pot

Right. Thats probably because the manufacturer assumes that 15psi is sufficient for safe canning. But the important factor in this process is the temperature.

Clostridium botulinum bacteria can make a person gravely ill. Low acid foods must reach and maintain a temperature of 240ºF for an extended period of time in order to kill the bacteria. Its a simple matter of safety.

The National Center for Home Food Preservation does not recommend canning low acid foods in an electric pressure cooker, nor do I. As technology improves and testing is done, this may change of course. But for now, for the safety of your loved ones, please do not use this canning method.

    What Is Water Bath Canning

Water bath canning is safe for jams, jellies, and high acid foods like most tomato products and pickles. The required minimum temperature for this process is 212ºF.

Instant Pot canning may be possible in an electric pressure cooker IF you can provide certain conditions.

    • You must use a rack to keep the jars from sitting directly on the bottom of the pan.
    • The jars must be submerged under 1-2 of water. I have a large 10-quart Instant Pot and the largest jars I could process in it would be 1/2 pint canning jars .
    • The water must be maintained at a rolling boil. The setting for this may vary from model to model. You do not want to do this under pressure. Essentially, youre just using this as a canning pot.

For me, its just as easy to heat my canning pot on the stove so that Im not limited to certain jar sizes.

What If My Jars Dont Seal

Instant Pot Max Pressure Cooker 9 in 1, Best for Canning with 15PSI and ...

If any of your jars dont seal, you can reprocess your food. The first step is to remove the jars lid to check if there are any knicks on the rim of the jar. If yes, transfer the contents to a new jar and reprocess them. If it still doesnt work, store the jar in the refrigerator and consume it within a few weeks.

  • Place the trivet inside your instant pot and add about 3 cups of water or up to the trivet line. You can also add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to the water, although this step is optional.
  • Its important to process your food hot using hot jars. Your jars are already hot as they are filled with hot water. Depending on what produce you are canning, make sure you fill your jars while the food is still hot.
  • Empty the hot water from the jar, put the funnel in, and add in the food up to a ½ inch headspace. Shake the jars to get out any air bubbles, or use a debubbler to do the same.
  • Take a clean damp paper towel and wipe off the rim of the jar to get a good seal. Use a magnetic lid lifter to place the lid onto the jar and then screw on the ring until it is just finger-tip tight.
  • Prepare all your jars using the same method and place the prepared jars into your instant pot.
  • The next step is to close the lid and set the pressure valve is set to venting. Set the cycle to steam. Wait until you see steady steam rising from the venting valve and the float valve comes up to start your processing time.
  • Once the float valve is up, start the processing time according to your recipe.
  • When the time is up, you can either cancel the cycle on your instant pot or unplug it directly.
  • Wait for the float valve to drop to open the lid to your instant pot.
  • Carefully open the lid and use a jar lifter to carefully lift out the jars onto a cooling rack so that they can seal shut.
  • Now Lets See How To Can In An Instant Pot

Before using the jar, you have to make sure there are no cracks in the jar. So it will save you from beforehand while you are canning. The next step is you can sterilize the jar in the instant pot.

Place your jar in the stand after adding the needed amount of water and vinegar. Now close the jar and seal the vent. Begin the steam cycle for 1 minute.

You can add the food in the hot jar leaving 1/4 inch headspace.

Clean the borders of the jar and it makes sure to give you a tight seal each time. Place the lid on tightly then set venting after placing them in the instant pot.

After setting into the stream, wait for the float valve to come up. Once it comes up, start your processing time.

When it finishes off the processing time, switch off the Instant pot so the pressure can come down.

After the float valve comes down, open the instant pot and take the jar out but be careful you might burn your hands. So let it cool down and leave them for 12 hours, now your stream can is done.

Can An Instant Pot Be Used For Canning

Pressure Canning Green Beans In An Instant Pot Max, #Homesteading

We currently have one Instant Pot model that is capable of pressure canning. The 6-quart Instant Pot Max is rated at 15 PSI. Pressure canning is for low-acid foods, like vegetables and meats, and requires a minimum 15 PSI, says Stefanie Daichendt, influencer relations manager at Instant Brands. All other Instant Pots are rated up to 12 PSI. This means that they do not reach the appropriate pressure for safe canning. It is possible to do water boil canning in our other Instant Pots. For water boiling in the Instant Pot, we would recommend using the slow cook function on the more setting, as this will ensure that the water in the pot remains at a steady boil between 200 and 210 degrees Fahrenheit. It is also important to follow the USDA guidelines when canning in an Instant Pot.

Can I Pressure Can In The Instant Pot

by Carolyn Thomas | Apr 3, 2021 | Canning, Preserve, Pressure Canning

Many people wonder if you can pressure can food in the Instant Pot. Knowing the common pressure canning mistakes to avoid will ensure youre practicing healthy canning methods so you and your family stay safe.

We all love our electric pressure cookers. Theyre convenient, fast, and were pretty comfortable using them. But are they safe for pressure-canning foods?

What Is A Low Acid Food

According to the National Center for Home Food Preservation:

Low-acid foods have pH values higher than 4.6. They include red meats, seafood, poultry, milk, and all fresh vegetables except for most tomatoes. Most mixtures of low-acid and acid foods also have pH values above 4.6 unless their recipes include enough lemon juice, citric acid, or vinegar to make them acid foods. Acid foods have a pH of 4.6 or lower. They include fruits, pickles, sauerkraut, jams, jellies, marmalades, and fruit butters.

Pressure canning is the only safe method for preserving low acid foods. The required minimum temperature for this process is 240ºF. That temperature must be maintained throughout the processing time in order to prevent botulism.
