After the cooking cycle finished, wait 10 15 minutes before moving the Venting Knob from Sealing Position to Venting Position to release the remaining pressure.

Always make sure the Floating Valve completely drops before opening the lid.

Whats the advantage?

  • Compare to Quick Release: Significantly reduces the chance of food splattering out from the Pressure Release Valve.
  • Compare to Natural Release: Faster release method when the pressure cooker is full of food with high liquid volume.

-Natural release. If you do NOT do a quick release by pushing the valve to the venting position, the Instant Pot will naturally begin to release the steam on its own immediately after the programmed cooking time is over. This allows the pressure to naturally dissipate on its own. It will start counting to let you know how many minutes it has been releasing the pressure. Usually this takes about 10-20 minutes depending on what and how long you have been cooking something.

The Instant Pot Display Wont Turn On

Most display issues are often the direct result of a power problem. One quick way to try and fix your display is to make sure the power cord is fully plugged into your Instant Pot. If you previously tried this and the screen still wouldnt turn on, you should try to plug your Instant Pot into a separate outlet entirely. If youre still unsuccessful, contact Instant Pot support.

Using The Instant Pot

Now that you know the parts of your Instant Pot, it is time to use your Instant Pot.

I always suggest starting off by doing a water test. This is a way to get comfortable using the Instant Pot without wasting any actual food. It is quick and easy to do, so well worth the extra few minutes.

After doing the water test, keep in mind the following steps whenever you use your Instant Pot.

  • Be sure your inner pot is secured into the base of your inner pot.
  • Always use thin, cold, liquid to achieve and maintain pressure.
  • 3-Quart Instant Pot: ½ cup thin liquid
  • 6-Quart Instant Pot: 1 cup thin liquid
  • 8-Quart Instant Pot: 1 ½ cups thin liquid
  • 10-Quart Instant Pot: 2 cups thin liquid
  • Check to be sure that the sealing ring is attached securely to the lid and place the lid on the inner pot.
  • Be sure the vent knob is sealed.
  • Set the cooking time using manual or pressure cook to control the time yourself.
  • Remember it will take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes for the Instant Pot to come to pressure. This is determined by how full the inner pot is.
  • Once the cooking time has started, it will count backward.
  • After the cooking time has elapsed the Instant Pot will default to holding the food warm. It will count upward showing how long since the cooking time has elapsed.
  • Based on the recipe’s instructions, allow the pressure to release naturally or do a quick release of pressure.
  • After pressure has been released, it is safe to remove the lid and enjoy your recipe!

The Instant Pot Is Taking Too Long To Start The Timer

Remember, Instant Pots take time to heat up. The Instant Pot will take 10 to 15 minutes to heat up and bring the pressure to proper levels, and then it will start the timer. So when a recipe says pressure-cook in Instant Pot for 5 minutes, you should always mentally add the extra time beforehand. If it still seems like its taking too long, check your settings carefully to make sure you are in the right mode.

Q: Do I Need To Turn The Pressure Cooker Off Before Using A Quick Pressure Release Or A Natural Pressure Release

No you do not need to turn the pressure cooker off for a quick or natural pressure release. The pressure will release on the Keep Warm setting. The benefit of not turning it off is that the time will count up so you can see how long its been since the pressure cooking time ended.

There is some debate about whether or not the pressure releases more slowly if its on the Keep Warm Setting. The Instant Pot Companys official position is that it does not release more slowly on the Keep Warm Setting because the Keep Warm heat does not turn on until the pressure has been released.

I prefer to turn off or unplug the pressure cooker before I do a quick pressure release or natural pressure release. I seem to always forget to turn off the pressure cooker if I dont turn it off when the pressure cooking ends. I also prefer to set a timer to remind me 10 minutes has passed and its time to release the pressure when Im doing a natural pressure release.

Sealing Ring Has Expanded Too Much And Wont Seal Properly

The sealing ring naturally expands when its heated. Once cool, it should return to its natural state. If youve just completed cooking something, the sealing ring may still be in its expanded state preventing the Instant Pot from sealing.

SOLUTION: Try placing the Instant Pot sealing ring in the freezer or run it under cold water to contract it. You can also try and turn the sealing ring over and replace it.

I Cant Figure Out The Timer

This is a very common issue when first using the Instant Pot, and there are a couple of guidelines you really need to know to avoid mistakes or problems.

Selecting an option like poultry will automatically create a timer, which you then adjust to the proper time with the plus and minus buttons below the timer screen. Remember, the timer does not include how long it takes the Instant Pot to heat up or cool down. Its designed to only be the time that the food inside is actively pressure-cooking. Your Instant Pot will take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes to build pressure. It depends on the amount, type, and initial temperature of the ingredients. It will also take time to release pressure, especially if the recipe calls for a natural pressure release. This step often takes another 10 to 20 minutes. Remember to include all this time in your cooking calculations.

Ensure The Valve Is Properly Assembled

Amazon.com: Onwon 2 Pieces Steam Release Handles Universal Silicone ...

The number one reason that your valve is most likely to fall out of the instant pot is that it has been assembled incorrectly. Whether by you or by someone else, it is an easy mistake to make!

If the valve falls out, make sure to get the lid off your pot, and take a close look at the valve and lid. Making sure that everything is completely clean , first insert the pin. Insert the pin from the top of the lid, pushing it down into the lid itself.

When the pin emerges on the other side of the lid, place the silicone cap onto the pin, and the pin will be locked in place, ready for use. Make sure that the silicone cap can fit snugly against the silicone ring within the lid, as that is where the seal is made.

As weve said before: the valve is designed to be removable for cleaning, so if you do assemble it incorrectly, you can always take it off and try again.

Instant Pot Sealing Ring And Burn Notices

If you didnt catch this issue early on, you may have boiled off a lot of the liquid in your pot. If youre cooking a soup, this probably isnt an issue, but if youre cooking a relatively low-liquid dish, youll need to replace that liquid before you resume cooking in order to avoid a burn notice. Check your pot and add ½ 1 cup of additional liquid to the pot before resealing, being sure to scrape any accumulated bits off the bottom of the pot.

And thats it! Now you can get back to enjoying some fantastic Instant Pot cooking.

How To Know The Instant Pot Is Pressurized

When you start a pressure cooking cycle, the Instant Pot will not start counting down right away. First, the pot needs to pressurize, which can take 10 minutes or more, depending on how much food is inside. The more full the pot, the longer it will take to come to pressure. So, dont be alarmed if your Instant Pot screen simply says On for a while.

Youll know that the pot is pressurized when the floating valve in the lid pops up. Shortly after that happens, the count-down for your cooking cycle will begin.

    Replacing The Steam Release Handle

If you have an older model of Instant Pot, then you might find a metal safety clip situated inside the pot.

This feature was designed to prevent the appliance from over pressurising.

However, many owners of this design have noticed that the ring can bend over time and result in the sealing position of the lid being set to venting.

This bent ring can result in steam escaping from the Instant Pot when the appliance should be pressurised.

If you notice that you have this model of Instant Pot and are experiencing this issue, you can try removing the metal ring and straightening it with pliers to get it back in position.

Alternatively, if you dont feel comfortable doing that, you can purchase a replacement Instant Pot steam release handle.

However, when I faced this issue a couple of years ago, I found that the cost of a replacement steam release handle was only $20 less than the cost of an entirely new Instant Pot, so I took the time to replace the entire appliance instead.

Dont Use The Same Sealing Ring For Every Instant Pot Recipe

The sealing ring is an Instant Pot accessory and safeguard that keeps your lid locked tight during pressure cooking. It helps your machine withstand the high forces of pressure needed to cook the food inside.

Since the sealing ring lives under your Instant Pot lid, it can absorb a lot of the steam and smell your food emits while cooking.

Thats why its always good to have a spare sealing ring to use for different types of Instant Pot recipes. I recommend using one sealing ring for sweets and another sealing ring for savory dishes.

You can find these accessories on , like this 2-pack of sealing rings for less than $12.

Q: What Is A Natural Pressure Release

Best pressure cooker pressure relief valve

A natural pressure release is when you leave the pressure release switch in the Sealed position when the cook time ends. This lets the pressure release slowly, without you doing anything. When the pressure is fully released, the float valve will drop and the lid will unlock and open.

A natural pressure release is a bit anticlimactic in comparison to a quick pressure release. There is no jet of steam when the natural pressure release starts. Theres also no clear way to tell when the pressure is fully released, and no beep or signal when the lid unlocks. Sometimes you can hear the float valve drop if youre close by.

The time it takes for the pressure to release naturally will vary depending on the ingredients and amount of liquid in the pressure cooker. A natural pressure release can take from 5 to 30 minutes in the electric pressure cooker.

Food inside the cooking pot will continue to cook as the pressure decreases.
