Can Pressure Cookers Explode

Instant Pot recalls multicooker model due to overheating, melting

Pressure cookers themselves dont explode and typically arent harmful products. In pressure cooker explosion lawsuits, the term explosion refers to the scalding foods or liquids ejected from defective pressure cookers that burn or injure nearby people. In some cases, pressure has caused lids to explode off cookers and hit people.

Normally, safety mechanisms are supposed to prevent the lid from detaching while contents are under pressure. Pressure cooker explosion lawsuits claim that defects in safety mechanisms may allow the lid to open or detach while the food or liquid inside is still pressurized.

For example, Crock-Pot recalled about 914,000 pressure cookers in November 2020 for potential burn risk because the cooker could pressurize while the lid wasnt fully locked. The lid could suddenly detach and put people at risk of burns from scalding liquids or foods ejected from the product, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

‘the Middle’ Star Patricia Heaton Shares Her Recipe For Chicken Chilaquiles

Instant Pot was among the hottest gift of the holidays last year.

Vanessa LaClair, a mom of three, told ABC News she got the device for Christmas and used it a few times before discovering that the multicooker was melted on the bottom and that its wires had seemingly been scorched.

LaClair told ABC News the incident “scared” her and made her worry for her kids’ safety.

As a parent thats not something I want to worry about when I get a product from a store, she said.

LaClair, who lives in Essexville, Michigan, said she notified the company and posted about the incident on Facebook to potentially warn others.

To check your devices batch code, locate the silver label on the bottom of the cooker. The batch code is the 4-digit number on the bottom right of the label. If your product has one of these numbers, the company says to immediately stop use of the recalled” product and return it to Walmart to receive a free replacement.

Zantac And Metformin Recalled Because Of Ndma

In 2020, the heartburn drug Zantac and various lots of the type 2 diabetes drug metformin were recalled because of potential contamination with N-nitrosodimethylamine , a cancer-causing agent. After several months of testing, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on April 1, 2020, also requested the recall of all generic Zantac medications from the market. Independent tests had shown that NDMA could increase in the drug over time and with exposure to high heat during storage and transport.

Metforminwhich is the first-line treatment for type 2 diabetesremains on the market. Only some lots were recalled after tests showed they contained small amounts of NDMA. The FDA announced that metformin extended-release medications may contain the carcinogen, and many of these were recalled. The FDA has continued to provide updates on additional metformin recalls as they occur, the most recent one involving Nostrum Laboratories extended-release metformin.

Denver Woman Severely Burned By Pressure Cooker Device That Was Later Recalled Due To Injuries

DENVER Georgina Barela was attempting to make beans in a pressure cooker device when the lid flew off, leaving her with second-degree and third-degree burns on her face, arms and chest.

“The way the pressure cooker was sitting … it hit the cupboard and it ricocheted from there,” Barela explained as she described the impact of the lid flying across her kitchen, sending hot liquid everywhere.

“It exploded, and after that was kind of like a blur. Everything happened so fast,” Barela said.

Barela said the pain was immediate and unlike anything she has ever experienced before. Her mother rushed to the kitchen to help her and called 911. Once at the hospital, she learned the burns were severe.

The treatment and recovery process lasted more than a year. During that time, doctors used five square feet of cadaver skin grafts to treat the burned areas.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the multi-cooker is still able to pressurize when the lid is not fully locked, which can cause the lid to suddenly become separated from the device. The CPSC found this poses a potential burn risk when hot foods or liquids escape from the device.

Denver-based law firm Burg Simpson recently filed a lawsuit on behalf of Barela, citing the incident where her Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cooker exploded in June 2019. The product was later recalled in November 2020.

“Theyre basically cooking with a potential time bomb,” said attorney Michael Burg.

Medtronic Minimed 600 Series Insulin Pumps Because Of Errors

Best Instant Pots of 2020: Every Instant Pot Size and Model

Some patients living with diabetes use Medtronic MiniMed Insulin Pumps to deliver their daily insulin. These products are small, computerized devices that deliver insulin to help control blood sugar levels. They serve as an alternative to insulin injections and provide continuous delivery of short-acting insulin throughout the day.

In February 2020, the company recalled about 322,000 of its Medtronic MiniMed 600 Series Insulin Pumps because of a risk of malfunction. The devices could have a missing or broken retainer ring, which helps lock the insulin cartridge into place in the pumps reservoir compartment. If the cartridge comes loose, the pump may deliver too much or not enough insulin, which could result in hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. Severe hyperglycemia can result in serious complications, including loss of consciousness, seizure, and death.

At the time of the recall, Medtronic had received over 26,000 complaints about these devices malfunctioning, as well as reports of 2,175 injuries and one death.

What Happens If A Pressure Cooker Explodes

If youre standing close enough, the sheer force of a pressure cooker explosion could knock you back and cause injuries. But the biggest risk from a pressure cooker explosion comes from the contents inside that are heated to extreme temperatures.

When a pressure cookers lid bursts, whatevers cooking inside can go flying across the room because of the sudden change of pressure. At well over 200 degrees, thats hot enough to scald or burn anyone in the room whos exposed to the spray.

Not just that, but pressure cookers are so powerful that some explosions can cause property damage to peoples kitchens and houses. After an incident like this, many victims file personal injury lawsuits against the manufacturers of these appliances. A settlement or judgment from a lawsuit can help cover costs of medical treatment, lost wages from being unable to work, and any pain or emotional suffering youve experienced as a result of your accident.

Other Brands Of Pressure Cookers Linked With Burn Injuries

This is one of only several pressure cooker recalls that have been implemented over the last several years. In 2018, Walmart recalled about 100,000 Gem 65 8-in-1 multi cookers because of a manufacturing defect that could cause the cooker to overheat and melt on the underside, posing a fire hazard. In August 2017, ALDI recalled Crofton Chefs Collection 6 L Pressure Cookers because the lid could open unexpectedly and explode hot food or steam, potentially resulting in severe burn injuries to anyone standing nearby.

Other pressure cooker brands that have been either linked to injuries or recalled because of defects include Breville, Cuisinart, Instant Pot, Maxi-Matic, Nuwave, Tristar, Welbilt, and more. Individuals who have suffered from burn injuries have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers to recover damages.

Pressure Cooker Lawsuits Claim Defective Design & Safety Features

Internal temperatures in a pressure cooker can reach up to 250 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. Safety features built into pressure cookers are supposed to prevent pressure cookers from becoming home safety hazards, but pressure cooker lawsuits claim defective product design and safety features led to explosions creating a false sense of security.

For example, Instant Pot says consumers cant open the lid if the pot is pressurized, and they can be confident the Instant Pot wont explode, according to a lawsuit filed by Brittany Gonzalez on behalf of N.G., a minor, in June 2021.

Unfortunately, even after Gonzalez believed the pot was depressurized, she was able to remove the lid without much force, and the pot exploded. N.G. was nearby and suffered third- degree burns all over her body that required skin grafts. She suffered scarring, a frozen shoulder and permanent disfigurement.

Safety features that may be defective include:
