Instant Pot IP-DUO Quick Start Video with Laura Pazzaglia

If you’re looking for a quick and convenient way to cook your favorite recipes, choose Instant Pot appliances and accessories to get the job done right. From pressure cookers and air fryers to blenders and toaster ovens, there’s no end to the great selection of Instant Pot small appliances at Kohl’s!

The Classic Duo Model

If you are looking for a model that has all the great functions of an Instant Pot without any extra bells and whistles, opt for the best-selling Duo. It comes in the 3-, 6- and 8-quart sizes and has 13 one-touch programs including soup/broth, meat/stew, bean/chili, slow cook, sauté, rice, porridge, steam, yogurt, keep warm and pressure cook.

If the yogurt button doesnt appeal to you, the Lux is the most basic Instant Pot model, offering all the functionality of a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, sauté pan, steamer and warmer without the yogurt-making feature. We do not recommend making yogurt in the Lux model.

Cleaning: As Easy As It Gets

We already assumed the stainless steel pot, steamer rack, plastic tools, and silicone ring were all dishwasher safe, but we were pleasantly surprised to find out the entire lid can go in the dishwasher, too. Cleanup cant get any faster than that. The only thing that cant go in the dishwasher or get immersed in water is the base, since it contains electrical components.

I Still Use My 6 Quart Ip

I was excited about this cooker when it first came out, but over time, I drifted back to my 6 quart Instant Pot. Turns out, I don’t need the extra space The 8 quart now lives on my pressure cooker shelf in the basement4Doesn’t everyone have a shelf full of pressure cookers in the basement?, where I go get it if I need the extra space. I still recommend the 8 quart if you’re cooking for larger crowds on a regular basis. Or, if you want a second PC, then it’s great to have the flexibility of the larger size. But, for most people, the 6 quart IP-DUO60 is a better fit.

Performance: Precise And Reliable

The Instant Pot Duo is proud to proclaim its a 7-in-1 appliance, featuring the following functions: Pressure Cooker, Slow Cooker, Rice Cooker, Steamer, Sauté, Yogurt Maker, and Warmer. The device has its temperature and pressure sensors dialed in, resulting in precise results when cooking. We tested the yogurt function on several occasions, and the pot always stopped its initial heating phase when the milk temperature reached exactly 180 degrees. We never had to click on the sauté button to get it to reach the optimal temperature.

We also tested its ability to slow cook, making chili with dried pinto beans and beef chuck, and soup with a ham hock and dried cannellini beans. It always produced tender beans and meat in four hours on high.

The steamer function on most multi-cookers isnt really steaming as much as pressure-cooking. The Instant Pot website says the program is designed so that the heating intensity is fast and steep, likely so that the contents of the pot get under pressure as quickly as possible so they dont overcook while the pot preheats.

This Instant Pot has its temperature and pressure sensors dialed in, resulting in precise results when cooking.

When sautéing, we loved how the Instant Pot had three temperatures to choose from: less, normal, and more.

Which Instant Pot To Buy Choices Choices

At the end of the day, you need to choose the best Instant Pot model for your needs.

Basically, the two areas where you need to make a decision are model and size.

Personally, I use the Instant Pot IP-DUO60 and have been very happy with it. Although, I now covet the newest 6 quart model the DUO Plus.

If you are not familiar with the Instant Pot, it is an electric pressure cooker, rice cooker, slow cooker, sauté pan, steamer, warmer, and yogurt maker all in one. You can read my Instant Pot Review here.

Wash The Pot Trivet & Lid

Getting to Know Your New Instant Pot IP-DUO

Its important to wash the pot, trivet, and lid of the Instant Pot Duo before you start to use it. You can easily just wash them in the sink with a mild dish soap and a sponge, or you can run the pot and the trivet through the dishwasher.

The lid of the Instant Pot should not be put in the dishwasher. Its best to always wash the lid by hand in the sink. This will help preserve the seal that is installed on the underside of the lid.

While we are talking about the lid, its important that you take note of the sealing valve. There are two settings of the Instant Pot Duo lid: sealing and venting.

When cooking something, the seal should always be set to sealing. When you need to release the pressure, the seal should be set to venting .

Resources: Manual Cookbook And App

We were very impressed with the level of detail in the full-color user manual. It was very informative and even listed the psi for each pressure level and the temperatures equivalents for the less, normal, and more sauté functions. Of all the brands we tested, Instant Pot had the clearest explanation of how its pre-set programs work.

The recipe booklet, on the other hand, was a little less impressive. The photos accompanying the recipes werent very attractive, and it was clear the recipes werent designed for that particular Instant Pot . The Instant Pot app also has more than 1,000 recipes to choose from, but none seemed particularly appealing.

Summary

Theres a reason the Instant Pot Duo is a bestseller. With a short learning curve its easy to use, versatile and saves you time in the kitchen. With functionality to satisfy everyone from the beginner to the advanced chef, youll wonder how you ever lived without one!

Overall
  • Takes up storage or counter space
  • Slow cooker function isnt great
  • Not always as fast as you think

After 3+ years of use, we can confidently say that the Instant Pot Duo is our favorite kitchen appliance.

We were late to jump on the Instant Pot bandwagon because we didnt really want another appliance taking up space in our kitchen and it seemed a little scary to use a pressure cooker.

Although we initially found it daunting and a little hard to use, we quickly came to appreciate the functionality and versatility it added to our kitchen. We fell in love with the sauté function, rice cooking ability and how quickly we could make tender, fall-apart pulled pork.

Which Size Is Right For You

When selecting your Instant Pot, you’ll want to consider how much space you have. Instant Pot models come in four different sizes: 3-, 6-, 8- and 10-quart. Depending on what youre going to use it for, the size you choose can make a big difference.

If youre sticking to side dishes and meals for up to three people, Instant Pot recommends the 3-quart size. This is offered in most basic models including the Duo, Duo Nova, Duo Plus, Ultra and Lux. The 6-quart size is the most popular and is available in every model except the Duo Crisp, which is an Instant Pot and air fryer combo. Instant Pot recommends this size for feeding up to six people. The 8-quart model is the next most-popular size. It is offered in all models except the Smart WiFi and Max models, and is recommended for large families or to meal prep food for the week. The Duo Nova is the only model that comes in the 10-quart size, which is designed for larger meals, feeding a crowd or to stock the freezer with family dinners.

Our Experience So Far

Instant Pot IP

Well we pretty much use it for everything now. We make a lot a lot of stews. We saute the carrots, meat and onions then include everything else. Then seal, place it on high pressure for seven minutes, release naturally, and everytime, in such a short time we have a perfectly cooked delicious meal. Also this is enough for four or five servings.

If you’re in love with beans like we are, well the other day, I quick soaked some by covering with water, then hitting for five minutes, top pressure. I then let it release naturally and let them sit for a few hours. Stupendous.

We’ve even taken this away in our RV, and although bigger and heavier than desired for an RV, it’s just so useful. We’ve even made banana bread in it. And we power it up on our solar system and it only draws 67A. If I saute for four minutes, we can cook our leftovers.

We used to have a VitaClay that truly was great for making beans and excellent with bone broth, but took so much longer to cook with and so much heavier than the Instant Pot.

When you first get an Instant pot the instructions can be a little intimidating and you feel like you’ve got a lot to learn, as they’re fairly extensive. But actually I found a few things I wanted to know which weren’t in them.

I wanted to know how long was each programmed cooking cycle and also when sautering, what temperatures do the various settings heat too?

So, after now learning that, I can pass a few tips onto you.

Which Instant Pot To Buy Let’s Start With Model

The Instant Pot basically comes in two model series.

There is the IP-DUO and the IP-LUX.

Judging from most recipes that I see online it seems that most people opt for the IP-DUO.

For the most part, the two models are similar except that the IP-DUO has a yogurt making functionality and the most current version of the IP-LUX has a cake and egg setting .

The IP-LUX also costs less than a comparable sized IP-DUO.

I prefer the Instant Pot IP-DUO to the Instant Pot IP-LUX series because I do use it to make yogurt and I like researching Instant Pot recipes online .

    Advantages Of A Pressure Cooker

There are several advantages to using a pressure cooker like the Instant Pot for your meals. It offers the same results as a slow cooker, only it completes the task in just a fraction of the time. Need to get a quick dinner ready? The Instant Pot is the ideal solution and one of the best kitchen appliances for the job.

However, when timing your meals, you need to remember that there is a cooking time as well as the time it takes for the appliance to build up and release pressure. It can take approximately ten minutes for the Instant Pot to come to pressure depending on how much you are making. The difference between the Instant Pot coming to pressure and an oven preheating is that the food must be inside of the Instant Pot during the pressurizing process.
