Finishing your meal after a burn notice will depend on where you were in the cooking process and the ingredients.

TIP: If you get the burn notice while cooking any ingredients that contain thickeners , you will likely get the burn notice again if you try to pressure cook it. In these instances, I recommend using Sauté mode to finish your meal. Stir constantly like you would when cooking on the stove. It will take longer to finish but will be much quicker than getting the burn notice multiple times.

Can I Ignore Burn Message On Instant Pot

No, it will turn off and stop cooking when this alert pop up on the screen. You have to do something or it will stop and just sit there. You can save the meal still but of course it is better to avoid it to begin with. A bit of extra liquid and scraping the bottom of the pot usually does the trick but it will have to reach pressure all over again after.

Let me start with the pot and utensils I use on a regular basis:

  • This is my 6 qt. Instant Pot I have the first and most basic one and it works great
  • I use wooden utensils so I dont scratch the inside and they last forever

The only inserts I use and would recommend really are these:

How To Ensure You Dont Get The Burn Notice

Always ensure you put the right amount of liquid in the food. The least amount you should put in food is at least one cup. Add liquid to all recipes. The liquid you add to the food is the one that helps in building up pressure that helps in the cooking process.

If you need to add a thick sauce to the food, do it later in the pot to pot method as the thick sauce will also cause the burn message.

Ensure there is no leakage of steam. When the steam leaks, the pots liquid reduces, causing the burn, and there is a reduction in pressure, and hence the food wont cook fast. Make sure you fit the lid right. Ensure the sealing ring is fitted properly. Also, the float valve should be clean and well fitted.

Check all the leakage causes and ensure your pot is not experiencing any leakage and if there is, sort it and add liquid to the food to replace the leaked liquid.

The pot should be deglazed at all times. This will help to prevent the food from getting stuck at the bottom of the pot. Use thin liquid like wine or water. This should be done especially after sauteeing.

Use a trivet to raise the food, and it will help the food from getting burnt, especially when pressure cooking meat. Most models come with a trivet, and hence it shouldnt be hard.

Avoid untested recipes with the instant pot, as they can mess you greatly. Unless the recipe is safe and you are sure it will work perfectly.

Browned Bits Were Not Scraped Off Properly

Troubleshooting Common Instant Pot Problems

I make a lot of meats that require searing the meat first. When you do this, browned bits will adhere to the bottom of the pot. If you dont deglaze the pot properly before moving on to the pressure cooking phase, the pot will give the burn notice. To prevent this, make sure you scrap up all the browned bits before turning on the pressure cook.

Its also possible that you may not have placed the ring back properly after washing it. Sometimes, users dont place the ring back at all. They remove it for cleaning and then forget to put it back. So make it a habit for you begin cooking to make sure that the ring is placed back properly all the way around the pots lid.

10 WAYS to Avoid Instant Pot BURN | How to save “burning” food

The Instant Pot has over a dozen safety features to protect you and the food youre cooking. These safety mechanisms also protect the Instant Pot from being damaged. One of them is the burn-protection sensor that monitors the temperature.

Under pressure, the Instant Pot can reach temperatures well above the boiling point of water, but its important that things dont get too hot.

When a high temperature is detected at the bottom of the inner pot, the burn-protection sensor suspends heating. On older Instant Pot models, the warning ovHt or ouHt was displayed. This message was changed to the burn message on subsequent models and more recent Instant Pots sayfood burn.

Whe you get the food burn message, most likely the Instant Pot will have no pressure i.e. the float valve will be in the down position. All the buttons light up, there will be multiple beeps and the display will alternate between the words burn and food.

Sometimes the Instant Pot says food burn and then changes toOn. If this happens to you, you can just ignore the message and let it keep cooking. Youll probably have some food stuck on the bottom, but you should be able to salvage most of it.

I test my Instant Pot recipes on multiple models of Instant Pot and you can be assured that they have instructions that will help you avoid thefood burn message. You might also want to read my article on the reasons why your Instant Pot is not sealing.

What To Do If You Have A Sticky Fond

It’s really a simple fix if you have a sticky fond on the bottom of your Instant Pot liner. Add a small bit of water and rub the bottom of your spoon or spatula against the liner until all of the food particles have dissolved.

Once the food is free from the bottom, you’re good to continue the recipe as written.

How To Prevent A Burn Message In The Future

There are a few simple steps you can take to make sure you never have this issue again. First, make sure there is enough liquid in the pot. Instant Pots rely on water-based liquid to pressurize properly and if the food is too dry it will begin to overheat. Next, make sure the steam release is sealed. The machine will not be able to reach proper pressure if the release isnt sealed. Another helpful step is to layer the ingredients within the pot. Make sure liquids are on the bottom, then layer in the restwithout mixing. This will help to prevent scorching. Finally, make sure that the sealing ring and float valve are working properly.

The more familiar you get with your Instant Pot, the more confident youll become cooking with it.

Install Sealing Ring Properly

You need to make sure that the sealing ring is pushed into the sealing ring rack all the way in and all around. Issue #: Steam Is Escaping Your Instant Pot Via The Knob Or Your Sealing Ring

If your instant pot knob is turned to venting instead of sealing, it will release the steam instead of building the pressure it needs to build. This can dry out the water in your pot necessary for proper pressure cooking, as well cause the bottom of the pot to get too hot, triggering the burn notice.

Also, if your sealing ring is not properly in place, or if its damaged or has food stuck on it, this could also trigger a burn warning for the same reason as the knob.

Adding Ground Meat Without Pre

Adding a few pieces of meat wont cause you any trouble, but adding a blob of ground meat without pre-cooking it can. It will stick to the bottom of the pot and start burning. And the result will be a burn error message popping up. So to avoid this issue, the best thing you can do is pre-cook your ground meat before adding it in the instant pot.

Causes Why Food Burn Happens

Why did my food burn in the Instant Pot?
  • Add at least 1 cup of liquid: In order for pressure to build up inside the pot, it has to be created. From what? From steam. From water or broth. There is a minimum amount of thin liquid that has to be added even when roasting a whole chicken. Rule of thumb is 1 cup.
  • Always add tomatoes on top: Because Instant Pots heating element is located at the bottom and may cause sugars in tomato products caramelize and burn. Therefore, we add diced tomatoes, tomato sauce and tomato paste on top and do not stir.
  • After you add tomatoes, do not stir: Again, you dont want to push tomatoes to the bottom. Generally it is completely unnecessary and better not to stir anything in Instant Pot.
  • If sauteing, make sure to deglaze: Little black bits that are left from sauteing stick to the pot. If they arent removed, pressure cooker will make them more hot and think they are burning. If you deglaze with water and incorporate them into the recipe like I advise, you wont get the burn notice, promise.
  • Always pre-cook ground meat: Adding pieces of meat are fine. But if you add a blob of ground meat without pre-browning it first, it will stick to the bottom and start burning.
  • Forgot to turn venting valve to Sealing: If you dont turn venting valve to Sealing position, steam will keep coming out from it. Eventually causing complete loss of water and Burn message. Create a rule to turn valve to Sealing before setting cooking time.
