Instant Pot Beef Stroganoff Recipe – Super Easy and Delicious

You may have heard about beef stroganoff considering it’s very well-known and available to order in many restaurants around the world. According to Bon Appetit, the dish originated in Russia in the 1800s. Many people regard stroganoff as comfort food and why not? It’s super tasty, and the meat just melts in your mouth! At first glance, you might think that the dish is complicated. However, it’s actually not hard to make at home if you have an Instant Pot handy .

“This is such a simple dish, but it’s packed full of flavor,” says Ting Dalton, recipe creator, award-winning writer, and blogger of Cook Simply. For non-meat eaters, don’t feel left out. You can definitely still enjoy this dish. “A vegetarian option is to remove the beef altogether and just double or even triple the number of mushrooms. You could use different types of mushrooms portabello, chestnut mushrooms. Mix them up,” says Dalton.

Making vegetarian stroganoff can also be easier: “There would be no need to do the flour step. You’d fry the mushrooms with the onions and garlic, add the flour and mix well before adding the beef broth and continuing with the rest of the steps,” Dalton advised.

Whichever version you’re making, this Instant Pot stroganoff might become your comfort food of choice. Now, let’s get cooking.

Can I Cook The Egg Noodles In The Instant Pot

When I was researching how to make Beef Stroganoff in the Instant Pot, I came across a lot of recipes that suggested cooking the egg noodles in the Instant Pot with the sauce. I have cooked noodles in the Instant Pot before and I have found that they come out a little on the soft side. My family prefers noodles more al dente, so I like to cook them separately. If you want to cook the noodles with the sauce, follow steps 1-8 below and then add the egg noodles to the pot. Set the Instant Pot to Manual and cook on high for 5 minutes. Do a natural release for 5 minutes, and then a quick release. You shouldnt have to follow the optional thickening instructions, since the pasta will release some starch into the sauce while cooking.

    Can You Freeze Beef Stroganoff

Best Ever Beef Stroganoff Recipe | Instant Pot

While you can absolutely freeze the cooked meat and vegetables for this beef stroganoff, we recommend waiting to add the egg noodles and Greek yogurt to this dish if youre planning to freeze it.

The consistency of the Greek yogurt can become a bit lumpy and inconsistent when frozen and then thawed, and the egg noodles tend to get a bit mushy.

If youre planning to make this ahead of time and then freeze for later, simply leave the Greek yogurt and noodles out, and add them in once the dish is thawed.

Which Cut Of Beef To Use For Beef Stroganoff Stew

This recipe works best with more tender cuts of beef, which require little cooking time. I used rump steaks in this recipe, which are more affordable and very juicy. Simply slice them into strips or cubes.

For a budget-friendly version, I use less meat and add more mushrooms, onions, peas and sometimes even potatoes or carrots

Thickening the beef stew: I am only using 1 cup of beef stock, which might not seem enough, but the mushrooms will release quite a bit of liquid during cooking. The sour cream will thicken the stew slightly, however, I also dissolve a tablespoon of tapioca flour or arrowroot flour right at the end, this is the brand we like. If gluten is not an issue, you can also add regular flour to thicken the stew. Cornstarch and rice flour are also okay.

Prepare boiled or mashed potatoes, rice or pasta while the beef stew is cooking. Serve with a salad or steamed greens on the side.

Dairy-free/Whole30/Paleo: Omit the cream but feel free to add a couple of tablespoons of coconut cream instead. Thicken with tapioca flour or arrowroot as per recipe. Serve over zucchini noodles or cauliflower rice and this recipe is then paleo and Whole30-friendly.

Gather The Ingredients For The Instant Pot Beef Stroganoff

To make the beef stroganoff, you’ll need two pounds of beef steak, an onion, garlic, mushrooms, butter, olive oil, beef broth, sour cream, paprika, all-purpose flour, salt, pepper, and fresh parsley. While all of the ingredients are easy to find at most grocery stores, there are also alternatives to some of the items on the list. If you can’t find sour cream, recipe creator Ting Dalton suggests using creme fraiche. For substituting for paprika, Dalton recommends adding “a heaped teaspoon of English mustard for an extra kick.”

    What Is Beef Stroganoff

As you might imagine, beef stroganoff originates from Russia. The first time we see this recipe is 1871, in a cookbook called The Gift to Young Housewives.

While not so much a gift to housewives anymore , this recipe has gone through many iterations over the years. It also is made differently from country to country as well. As recipes go, it all depends on what kinds of meat and spices you have available. A lot is owed to the creativity of cooks everywhere for transforming recipes over the years into something delicious and creative and new.

Regardless of origins or how it has changed over the years, the basis for beef stroganoff is the same: meat + mushrooms + onions + spices + sour cream sauce = melt-in-your-mouth, beefy goodness, all over noodles, of course.

    Season The Meat And Saut

    Instant Pot Beef Stroganoff Recipe

Toss in the beef slices and make sure you coat all of the meat with the dry mixture. “It’s important to use seasoning here, both in the flour, before coating the beef and for the mushrooms,” said recipe creator Ting Dalton.

Next, pour the olive oil into the Instant Pot and select the “Sauté” function. Then, add the beef pices and fry for about three to four minutes or until they begin to brown. Depending on the size of your instant pot, you may need to do this step in a few batches.
