How To Cook Jasmine Rice Using The Instant Pot Duo Crisp

Getting Started with your Instant Pot Gourmet 6qt from Costco
  • First, rinse the rice and drain the water with fine mesh strainer. This way you are sure that you have drained the water as much as possible.
  • Prepare the Instant Pot: Place the rice in the 8-quart inner pot and add hot or cold water. Shake the pot to level out the rice. The rule of thumb is to add 1 and 1/2 cups of water for every 1 cup of rice.
  • Cover with the pressure cooker lead and make sure its sealed. Push the pressure cooker button and push start.
  • Cook Time: Push the pressure cooker button setting and set the pressure on HI. Set the timer to seven minutes. Push start.
  • Quick release when done.
  • What Is The Texture Of Homemade Yogurt

Most store-bought yogurt contains stabilizers to improve its body. Your successful homemade yogurt might be a little thinner than youre used to with commercial yogurt. Its often a little lumpy, too. Dont fret!

    • For smooth yogurt, just whisk it heartily once its chilled, and again right before serving.
    • For thick, creamy Greek-style yogurt, strain it through a cheesecloth.

    Why Buy An Instant Pot

An Instant Pot is for you if you like to use cheap cuts of meat that need a long cooking time to tenderise. Similarly, if you eat lots of beans and pulses and like to cook them from dried, or steam your fish and veg, or eat lots of rice. It also allows you to simply walk away from what you are cooking and do something else.

Though youll have to make an initial investment, over time you will be able to spend less on cheaper ingredients. Because the Instant Pot slow cooks and steams, you could clear some counter space if you have several appliances.

What To Consider When Shopping For An Instant Pot

Control panel: All Instant Pots currently on the market have relatively large control panels. It makes sense, given how multi-functional these kitchen gadgets are. But while theyre all rather comprehensive, the more sophisticated models offer sleeker, more digital control panels, including features like a dial to click through varying cooking functions and added guidance like OK to open lid.

Cooking pot: Though all Instant Pots have a stainless-steel inner pot with a tri-ply bottom for sauteing, more advanced models have additional benefits. The Instant Pot Pro comes with an added layer of extra-thick 3.5mm aluminum for faster, more efficient heating, while the Instant Pot Pro Plus has an inner pot thats stovetop-safe and induction compatible.

Pressure levels: On some models, there is only one pressure option: high. On others, you can choose from high or low pressure levels. And still others, you can even choose a max pressure level. High is perfectly suitable for most recipes, while low is good for slower cooking or things that you want to make more tender over a longer period of time, like beef stew, as well as foods that are delicate like rice, fish and even cakes. Machines with the extra-high pressure level will yield the fastest results and also make a really good and concentrated bone broth.

    No Cooking Status Display

    Instant Pot Duo 7

One drawback to having the LED screen is that you miss out on the LCD features that show you where you are in the cooking process. Its not a huge lossthe Gourmet simply reads ON while its preheating, then switches to the cook time while its pressure cooking.

Still, if youre impatient like me, its something to consider.

    Test : User Experience

    Serious Eats / Vicky Wasik

The test: In reading reviews from Instant Pot users, a common user experience complaint is fear about the steam released when venting the pressure cooker. To find the least scary option, we added 3 cups of water to each pot, sealed the lid, and selected the pressure cook option for 5 minutes. Once the cooking ended, we released the pressure and waited for the float valve to drop before opening the lid.

Another common frustration is about how the inner pot spins uncontrollably while sautéing. We took note of this behavior while searing the meat and sautéing the onions for the chili test mentioned above.

Intuitive design is also a heavy hitter in affecting user experience. The control panels on each model vary some use buttons while others have dials for navigating options. Each model gives information about whats happening inside the pot through different status indicators.

Ease of cleaning, of course, is also important.

All of the pots spun while we was searing and sautéing except for one: the Duo Pro. We tested this pot both on the stovetop and in the machine and it was stable in both methods. It had handles that held it put in the cooker’s base.

The Duo Pro was the easiest to navigate, and the steam release felt safe and simple. The upgraded inner pot that doesnt spin when stirring and can be used on the stovetop is a true value-add.

What Is An Instant Pot And Why Is Everyone Obsessed With It

Imagine having a slow cooker that also functions as a pressure cooker, a rice cooker, a steamer, and a yogurt maker. Thats the Instant Pot. Its simply an electric pot that lets you cook fast or slow. People love it because its a convenient, time-saving device that lets them quickly cook dinner without having to keep an eye on the stove.

But First What Is An Instant Pot

In a nutshell, an Instant Pot is a modernized electric pressure cooker. I personally use and love this 6-quart, Instant Pot Duo.

Not only does it pressure cook, it slow cooks, sautees, is a rice cooker, yogurt maker, and it even steams .

I especially love my instant pot when cooking dry beans, legumes, or tougher cuts of meat, making the meat tender in half the time.

The difference between a pressure cooker and an Instant Pot is that the Instant pot is electric and is self-contained, and you can walk away from it. A pressure cooker is manually heated on the stovetop. To see all our instant pot recipes, go here: Instant Pot Recipe Index!

If you love the Instant Pot Duo and also love using an air fryer, this may be just the electric pressure cooker option for you. We found it performed identically to the Duo when it came to pressure-cooking our three recipes, and the interface is also essentially the same as the Duo, though it has four more cooking functions than that model .

However, its about twice as heavy as the Duo, and with the air fryer lid , it requires a lot of vertical storage and counter space . Included are a broil/dehydrating tray, multi-level air fryer basket, air fryer basket base, protective pad, storage cover and rack. So, if you think an air fryer-pressure cooker combo would save room and youd use it frequently, this model is certainly worth considering. Otherwise, the Duo will work just fine and the Pro Plus will perform even better.

However, after a while using the Evo, we found it wasnt perfectwe couldnt saute at the highest setting and had some problems with the steam release valve.

    Best Budget Pressure Cooker

If you’re looking for a basic, affordable multicooker from the top name in the industry, the Instant Pot Duo Multi-Use Programmable Pressure Cooker is your best bet.

    • Capacity: 6 quarts
    • Inner pot material: Nonstick
    • Settings: pressure cook, sear/saute, steam, slow cook, sterilize, keep warm, ferment, plus 300+ preset programs in its menu
    • Number of included recipes: 100s in the Instant Brands Connect App
    • Extras: Extra sealing gasket, steam rack, steam basket, heat-resistant pad for the lid

Pros: Produced tender and juicy slow-cooked pork, builds pressure quickly, good browning, dishwasher-safe and metal utensil-safe stainless steel inner pot, Instant Pot app features 100s of recipes

Cons: Takes experimentation to get cooking times right, controls take some getting used to

The Instant Pot Duo Multi-Use Programmable Pressure Cooker comes in three, six, and eight-quart sizes and features a stainless steel inner pot, which most Instant Pots have. The Duo did okay in each test but excelled in our slow cooker test. The slow cooker pulled pork shredded effortlessly and had an excellent, juicy flavor. The pressure build was quick for the pressure-cooked pulled pork, but the pork was hard to shred. It seemed like it could have used 10 more minutes of pressure cooking.

Other Instant Pots And Pressure Cookers We Tested

We tested 11 electric pressure cookers for this guide. These are the ones that missed the cut.

What else we recommend and why:

Zavor LUX LCD: This model has more than 30 programmable settings, including sous vide, and an easy-to-read LCD. In our tests, it was easy to set up and use. It was quick to build pressure and made juicy, easy-to-shred pulled pork. However, we weren’t as impressed with its bean cooking and meat searing.

Ninja Foodi XL Pressure Cooker: The Ninja Foodi air fries and pressure cooks. And, in our tests, it did a great job of searing, slow cooking, and pressure cooking delicious meals but took longer than most units to build pressure. Read our comparison of the Instant Pot Duo Crisp vs. the Ninja Foodi.

Instant Pot Duo Evo Plus 80 : The Duo Evo Plus’s stay-cool handles set it apart from other multicookers since you usually need to grab potholders to lift a multicooker’s pot out. The pot also stays in place when you stir the contents. The screen is packed full of info, including several preset programs. It didn’t make our guide because it didn’t do better than average at any cooking task and was one of the worst at rice and slow-cooker pork.

What we don’t recommend and why:

Is An Instant Pot Really Worth It

Which Pressure Cooker Should I Get? Instant Pot Duo Evo Plus Review

Thereâs no denying an Instant Pot is a great kitchen appliance but you may be wondering if itâs really worth it? Or will it simply end up as another kitchen gadget that languishes on your countertop gathering dust?

Itâs important to remember that while Instant Pots offer a multitude of cooking methods, many of which means you no longer need to use an oven or a hob, they canât cook everything. For example, theyâre not an option if you regularly prepare pasta, noodles, or stir frys. And while some do come with lids that can air fry, we found making fries in an Instant Pot wasnât as good as using one of the best air fryers.

At the same time, you canât just pop the lid off and check the dish youâre cooking, as you would when using the hob, the oven, or a slow cooker. Youâll need to release the pressure, effectively stop cooking, and detach the lid. Then if the dish isnât ready, youâll need to start cooking again.

Similarly, an Instant Pot can certainly shave a few hours off cooking stews, ribs and other dishes that usually take the best part of a day to cook, however with dishes like rice or steaming vegetables the time saving is minimal, which may mean an Instant Pot isnât worth the investment.

    What Size Should I Get

The 6-quart Instant Pot is the most popular size by far, and its the one we recommend for most folks. It offers plenty of capacity for weeknight dinners, soups and stews, a pot of beans, or even a whole chicken, yet it doesnt take up a crazy amount of counter or shelf space.

But the choice is entirely up to you, and it depends on your cooking habits and available storage space. The Instant Pot Duo also comes in a 3-quart Mini size and an 8-quart size, whereas the Instant Pot Pro comes only in 6- and 8-quart sizes.

The 3-quart Mini version is a good option for one or two people or for folks with limited kitchen storage. But the appropriately named Mini has a tiny pressure-cooking capacity that tops out at 2 quarts. For foods that expand when they cook, such as beans and grains, the total volume cant exceed 1½ quarts.

If you cook for a lot of people or frequently make stock or broth, consider the 8-quart size. The hulking 8-quart Instant Pot will take up as much space on your countertop as a dish rack , but it can yield almost 1 gallon of stock.

How Does An Instant Pot Work

In pressure cooking mode, the Instant Pot locks the lid on and heats the liquid within it to make steam and its this steam that increases the pressure within it. This in turn speeds up the cooking time considerably, because under pressure water boils at a higher temperature, and the pressure forces the liquid into the ingredients faster.

This is particularly obvious when you cook cheaper cuts of meat that are tougher at the start. Pressure cooking also does one other thing that slow cooking doesn’t it will brown and caramelise the surface of ingredients because of the high temperature, which adds lots more flavour.

The pressure inside the cooker is kept under control by a valve that pops up to seal the lid as the pressure increases and a valve that lets out pressure as steam if it needs to bring the pressure down.

When the cooking time has finished you can open the valve to decrease the pressure quickly, which produces a stream of noisy steam. Alternatively, you can leave the pressure to drop over time.
