B Pot In Pot Cooking Method Without A Trivet
Testing Method: We added 1 cup of cold water in Instant Pot. Add in the container and pour 1 cup of cold water into the container. We repeated the same steps as Experiment A, but we put the container directly in the water with no trivet.
- Liquid: 1 cup cold water in the inner pot and 1 cup cold water in the container
- PIP Container Location: directly in the water at the bottom of the inner pot
- Pressure Cooking Method: High Pressure for 10 minutes, then Natural Release for 15 minutes
*Note: for consistency, we repeated the same procedure for every container.
How Long Will My Instant Pot Take To Come To Pressure
While it may take longer for the 8 quart to come to pressure than the 3 quart and the 6 quart, once it comes up to pressure your cooking times should be the same. You might not notice any significant Instant Pot cooking differences when it comes to cooking times though. They should be relatively spot on no matter which pot you are using.
It takes an average of 5-10 minutes for my 6 quart Instant Pot to come to pressure, depending on how much food is in it and if that food is frozen. An Instant Pot with frozen food takes longer to come to pressure than one with refrigerated food.
Note: Technically the cook times should be the same. If you want to see how crazy different cook times can be, head over to the Instant Pot Facebook group and ask how long it takes to make hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot. Youll quickly see what I mean by every pot and every size being different.
You can safely assume that unless noted otherwise, every Instant Pot recipe online is made for a 6 quart size. If youre using a 3 quart size or mini Instant Pot, divide the recipe in half and the cook time stays the same. If youre using an 8 quart Instant Pot, you can easily double the recipe youre cooking and the cook time stays the same.

Aside from being completely adorable, the silicone puller is amazing to use with your Instant Pot Mini. I receive it as a stocking stuffer gift a few years ago and recently put it to work with my Instant Pot creations. Stick the puller through the lid handle to release the pressure. I was using a big stirring spoon with an oven mitt. With this puller, my hand is further away from the steam spray. And with a little precise wedging you can do a controlled quick release to avoid coating your ceiling in steam . It also makes the slow quick-release relativity hands-free.
When I can avoid creating a sling I do. You can use this puller for lifting out pans by their handle. With a tray of egg bites, try using butcher string. It works really well and can be lifted out using this devil puller too. Tip: Grab a spatular to put under the tray as soon as its high enough to keep it balanced.

What Should I Do If I See The Instant Pot Burn Warning
When I see the Instant Pot BURN warning, I consider what is in the pot. If its hard boiled eggs that get the burn warning, I can bet that all of the water has evaporated and I should have added more . If I have something in my Instant Pot with tomato sauce, I can bet its that because tomato products tend to burn in the Instant Pot.
If my pot has just come to pressure and still has some time to cook, Ill release pressure and stir the contents. Ill also add more liquid to the pot to get rid of the burn warning. Ill then start the pot again, after reducing the cooking time .
Sometimes I see the BURN warning towards the end of the cooking cycle. If I see that, Ill release the pressure and stir the contents. Especially if I have noodles in the pot, I can usually put the lid back on and let them finish cooking without adding additional time to the pot.

Difference Between Instant Pot Duo 6qt & 3qt Mini
My first hiccup was that the buttons on the Instant Pot Mini 3QT DUO are slightly different that the 6QT & 8QT DUO.
Instead of a MANUAL button to push for pressure cooking as it appears on the 6QT & 8QT DUO models, the button is called PRESSURE COOK and its located in a different spot on the front panel on the Instant Pot Mini 3QT.
Ok, thats not too hard to relearn a more specified name and new location, but it still always takes me a few seconds to find it. Haha!
I also noticed that it came to pressure a few minutes quicker than the larger models. Yay!
This is to be expected since the Instant Pot Mini 3QT is a much smaller capacity and takes less time for the water to convert to steam for enough pressure to cook.
What Is The Instant Pot Burn Warning
The Instant Pot can alert you when the food inside is starting to burn, your screen will show the words BURN. Personally, I notice that I get the BURN error more when using the 8 quart recipes when I know the recipes have worked fine in the 6 quart.
This is a personal note, its something Ive experienced issues with. You might not see this issue but dont be surprised if you do!

These egg bite molds are like the ones that fit the 6QT & 8QT models, but these are smaller to fit inside the 3QT. This also means that instead of holding the regular 2.3oz, these only hold 1.2oz in each cup cavity.
If you prefer the larger egg bite molds, this set will give you the 2.3oz per cup capacity but has fewer cup cavities so that it fits inside the 3QT.
If a recipe calls for cooking something pot in pot, or cooking in a separate bowl inside the Instant Pot, then this oven safe pyrex bowl is what I recommend.

How Much Water Do I Need To Add To My Instant Pot
We all know that different sizes of pots need different amounts of water in order to cook food properly. After all, theyre using steam and pressure to cook things quickly. Here are the breakdowns of water needed in order for each size pot to function correctly.
- The 8 Quart Models need 2.5-3 cups of liquid
- The 6 Quart Models need 1.5-2 cups of liquid
- The 3 Quart Models need .75-1 cup of liquid
- these numbers came from the Instant Pot website. The numbers have changed over the years and as of 8/2021 they are what I can find directly from Instant Pot.
Ive mentioned it before and Ill mention it again, your Instant Pot is going to be at least a tiny bit different from every other one out there. Do your own test to see how much water your pot needs in order to come to pressure and hold for 5 minutes. Use the amounts above as a general guideline.
What I Love Cooking Most With My Mini Instant Pot
For the majority of the time, youll find me using the Instant Pot Mini cooking jasmine rice or quinoa.
My favorite way to use the Mini is cooking chicken breasts, thighs or tenders when I need some chicken cooked for a recipe that I am making on the stove top or will be baking.
Recipes such as enchiladas or chicken fried rice always need precooked chicken and the Instant Pot Mini cooks the chicken the most tender out of all of the Instant Pot models I have.
Plus, the natural pressure release is much quicker since its so small. This makes all of those meals calling for precooked chicken SO much easier to make.
