What Can You Make With Pressure Cooker Wild Rice

Instant Pot Wild Rice

I need this prepared wild rice on hand all the time, especially in the cooler months, because it makes such a great addition to soups, bread, stuffing, and salads.

Like my new favorite soup, Minnesota Wild Rice Hotdish Soup . Creamy, dreamy, comfort food, in soup form, and any Minnesota grandma would love a big piping hot bowl of this.

I also use this rice in my Corn & Potato Chowder recipe, and it would be perfect in the Beef & Wild Rice Stuffed Zucchini too.

I even throw some in my Chicken Noodle Soup for a little something extra.

Dreamy Instant Pot Chicken And Rice

What To Serve With Wild Rice Blend

Although I will happily eat an entire bowl of this rice as a meal in its own right, it also shines as a side dish. Its a great side to Thanksgiving dinner, or even as part of the stuffing. If youre looking for another easy entrée to serve this with, here are some good ones:

  • Savoury Lentil Soup uses the same combination of onions, carrots, and celery that youll already have on hand for this recipe.
  • Fresh fiddleheads are only available in the spring, but next time you get your hands on some, make these Lemony Sautéed Fiddleheads for the ultimate Canadiana-themed meal.
  • Borani Banjan is an Afghan eggplant recipe that is usually eaten with flatbread or basmati rice, and I like wild rice blend with it too.

Instant Pot Wild Rice

The holidays are such a great time to utilize your programmable pressure cooker, aka Instant Pot and youll find this is the perfect side dish to make all season long.

Heres how its going down.

STEP 1: Saute your vegetables

Insert your inner pot into the cooker. Turn your Instant Pot onto saute and add the olive oil. Then add the carrots, onion, celery, mushrooms, and garlic.

Add a touch of salt and pepper. Not a ton, just a touch.

Stir for about five minutes until the veggies soften.

STEP 2: Add the rice and other ingredients

Add the wild rice , broth, and rosemary and stir to combine. Season with additional salt and black pepper, just a touch.

Im gonna break in here with a little farm girl fact. Bear with me.

Fancy recipes probably call for fresh rosemary and parsley, but in my neck of the woods, I dont have these at the ready.

What I DO always have in my stocked pantry are dried herbs and spices. So were keeping things simple and using those.

No flavor is compromised in this shortcut, and you keep a little extra in your pocketbook. Its a win! Moving on.

STEP 3: Cook the mixture

Add the lid and set the pressure valve to seal. Select the Manual or pressure cook setting on the high setting and set cooking time to 15 minutes.

When the rice is done cooking, allow the pressure to do a natural pressure release for 10 minutes, and then do a quick release for any remaining pressure.

  • A few notes about Instant Pot rice: There is a bit of water left over after cooking , but when I reduced the water during testing, the Instant Pot showed the burn notice. Ive also found that the rice is a bit softer when cooked in the Instant Pot rather than when cooked in a pan.

How to Make the PERFECT Instant Pot Rice – White Rice, Brown Rice and Wild Rice

Whether or not you salt your rice is totally your personal preference. I know some people who cant stand unsalted rice, and others who cant imagine why anyone would ever salt it!

If you use salt, you HAVE to try Redmond Real Salt. I know, its just salt, but trust me: it makes a difference! Simply add a quarter teaspoon to the rice and water before sealing your Instant Pot.

How To Cook Wild Rice Blend In An Instant Pot

Instant pot cuts back the cooking time into half. While the stovetop version takes around 60-minutes to cook the wild rice, the instant pot version takes just 28-minutes to cook. Considering the 5-7 minutes of pressure building time and 10-minutes of natural pressure release, the total time for instant pot wild rice blend goes up to 42-45 minutes. But thats still better than 60-minutes and totally hands-free.

    How To Store Wild Rice

Instant pot wild rice can be stored in the refrigerator for 4-5 days after cooking. Before storing, get the rice to room temperature and store in an air-tight container.

Also, you can freeze this cooked wild rice and use it in batches. Even for storing in the freezer, the rice has to be at room temperature. Store in separate containers if you are going to freeze the wild rice. They can be stored up to 6 months. For thawing, place the required amount in the refrigerator overnight to thaw and then use it.

Make this delicious and nutritious wild rice in half the cooking time in your instant pot, and enjoy it in soups, stews, casseroles or salads in place of other grains.

    Serving & Flavor Suggestions:

There are so many ways to season and add different flavors to wild rice! Here are just a few of my go-tos:

    • My favorite way to serve wild rice is to heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Allow it to melt and then add 1 minced shallot. Cook for 2 minutes or until tender. Add 2 cloves minced garlic and 1 teaspoon fresh minced thyme and cook for 1 minute. Then add the rice and stir to combine. Cook for an additional minute, or until warmed through. Top with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a sprinkle of chopped parsley.
    • Wild rice is also delicious as a side dish. It can be mixed with garlic and parmesan, lemon and olive oil, or just a bit of butter and salt!
    • If youre using this wild rice in a grain bowl, I suggest mixing it with 2-3 tablespoons of your sauce or dressing before assembly.

How To Reheat Rice In The Instant Pot

    Failproof Instant Pot Rice

So, Ive seen a couple of people recommend adding water or oil and stir it in the inner pot and pretty much making a mess, haha.

    Um, not my favorite method.

I like things simple. I basically want the same convenience as a microwave but without the waves.

I store my leftover rice in a heat-proof glass container and then place the trivet in the Instant Pot, add a cup of water and place the rice uncovered on the trivet. Put the lid on, knob to sealing and press steam for 5 minutes. Quick pressure release, done!

You wont believe how easy it is! Perfect to enjoy with your favorite curries or stir-fry!

    Is rice good for you?

This is like a never ending debate!

I grew up in a family where rice was eaten every day. A meal would just not be complete until there was rice on the table. Thats because we belong to a region in India where rice was grown in abundance and my grand-father was a farmer, so we had rice farms! And since there was so much rice, it was obviously eaten all the time.

Growing up I never thought if rice was good or bad. However in spite of growing up in such an environment I never became a rice fan. I dont know why! While no one in my family could finish their meals without rice, I chose to avoid it whenever I could.

I always preferred my roti and eating rice seemed like a chore. All the rice in my home was always white. I didnt even know about brown rice until I grew up and it became a trend!

And hence came the debate that which rice is better for you brown or white?

Both white rice and brown rice are high in carbohydrates. White rice is basically brown rice minus the germ and the bran. Because brown rice contains the whole grain it is said to be a healthier alternative. It has more fiber, minerals and vitamins than the white counterpart.

But according to some studies, white rice is more easily digestible and hence a better alternative for the gut.

How Do I Cook Instant Pot Wild Rice

    Lets make it:

Step 1 rinse your wild rice under cold water

Step 2 place your rinsed wild rice, broth , and a pinch of salt in the instant pot.

Step 3 pressure cook on high for 25 minutes and then naturally release for 10 minutes

Give it a quick stir and then serve! Yum!

    Instant Pot Chicken & Rice

If theres one thing we find magical about Instant Pots, its how quickly and perfectly they cook chicken and rice. The rice is the perfect texture and the chicken is insanely tender. This is the meal we cook in the Instant Pot the most often.

IMPORTANT! If using newer versions of Instant Pot, especially 8-quart capacity models, we recommend removing the inner pot after sautéing and letting it cool off for 5 to 10 minutes before moving on to the pressure cooking stage. This will help prevent a potential burn warning.

Should I Use The Rice Button On My Instant Pot

The Instant Pots rice button is best used for white rice, as it is specifically calibrated to weigh white rice and water and cook the rice accordingly. This is ideal for weeknights when you truly want to set and forget your rice, but not great for cooking different varieties of rice on the fly.

Luckily, you can use your Instant Pots manual pressure function to cook white, brown, or wild rice on high pressure in just a few minutes. Heres how to do it.
