Ceramic and plastic pots are relatively easy to clean with dish soap, hot water, and a scrubber or old toothbrush, but terracotta pots with layers of crusty residue can be a challenge. Unfortunately, its common for terracotta containers to develop a very noticeable layer of unsightly mineral and salt deposits.

Although you can probably remove the crud with strong cleaning products and elbow grease, using vinegar to clean pots is an effective, environmentally friendly alternative to toxic chemicals. Your pots will look better and cleaning with vinegar will remove bacteria hiding on surfaces.

Cleaning The Condensation Collector

The condensation collector is a small plastic cup that hangs on the outside of the Instant Pot. It is not necessary to wash after every use, as it may not have accumulated much liquid. It may be hand washed or placed on the top rack of the dishwasher.

Top Tips For Instant Pot Cleaning

  • Remove the anti-block shield, a silicone nub that covers the float valve from the inside. With the shield off, you can get a better look at the float valve to confirm any blocks or clogs. Its a small part, so take care not to misplace or lose it.
  • Remove the silicone sealing ring. This part easily picks up strong odors. One method to rid it of any unwanted smells is to wash it separately in the dishwasher. Make sure to select a high-temperature cycle such as sanitize.
  • For general cleaning of the exterior, use a very damp sponge for blueish hard water stains, use a sponge dampened with white vinegar, followed by a damp paper towel.
  • Some home cooks dont bother with eliminating the odor and opt to buy an additional silicone ring. One ring is used for sweet dishes and the other for savory dishes. In any case, Instant Pot recommends that you swap in a new ring at minimum every 6 to 12 months.

Cleaning Instant Pot Sealing Ring

I wrote an entire post about cleaning Instant Pot sealing rings, which I recommend you read, as it has tips on removing odors as well.

But you can clean the silicone ring in the dishwasher, which should work well to sanitize and deodorize it, or you can use some vinegar and do a steam clean of the Instant Pot, or soak the ring in vinegar, in a bowl.

How Do You Get The Smell Out Of A Pressure Cooker Sealing Ring

How to clean your instant pot lid

While most parts of the Instant Pot clean simply with soap and water, the sealing ring tends to need additional care to keep clean. The porous material of the ring often traps the smells of the previous meal cooked in the pressure cooker. The ring should last anywhere from 18 months to 24 months but the makers recommend replacing it every 6-12 months.

Tips

  • It makes sense to have two-pack of sealing rings, one for savory and one for sweet. Heres the pack I have.
  • Also, you can store the lid upside down so that the sealing ring can air out.
  • In the meantime, you can keep the ring fresh and odor-free in a few different ways.

    Dishwasher

Place the sealing ring in the top rack of your dishwasher to regularly clean the ring. Allow the ring to dry entirely before replacing it on the lid.

    Deodorizing the ring

While the dishwasher should prevent food odors from staying trapped in the ring, you can also use this method to deodorize the ring.

  • Add 2 cups of water and along with half of a lime in the inner pot. I normally throw in leftover squeezed lemon rinds in there.
  • Close the lid and run the steam program for 2 minutes. Let the pressure release naturally.
  • Then, remove the lid, take the sealing ring out, and allow to air dry.

    Deodorizing The Sealing Ring

If your sealing ring has taken on any funky food smells, you can deodorize it by doing a vinegar steam clean right in your Instant Pot. Fill the inner pot with 1 cup of water, 1 cup of vinegar, and a few lemon peels. Run the Instant Pot on the Steam setting for 2 minutes, then let the pressure release naturally. When the Instant Pot unlocks, remove the sealing ring from the lid and let it air dry.

The vinegar and lemon oils will help steam away the odors that get trapped in the silicone ring. This helps to keep odors from transferring to other foods you cook in the future!

How To Naturally Release The Pressure

If a recipe calls for a natural release, youll do nothing when the cooking cycle is complete. For most recipes, it will take 10-15 minutes for the pressure to naturally leave the pot.

I like it when recipes tell you exactly how long to wait for the natural release. In all of my recipes in The Fresh & Healthy Instant Pot Cookbook, I tell you exactly how long to wait and when that time has passed you can move the steam release valve from Sealing to Venting to release any remaining pressure. That way youre not waiting around for an extra 30 minutes or more to eat your dinner!
